Ebay Question/Poll: Paying with Cash

What should I do?

Hello everyone,

I just got a payment for an ebay auction. It was for a total of $9.00. He sent me $10.00 US and requested change. My question to the fine members of HI is, what should I do? I know it is only $1.00, but this guy didn't even respond to any of my emails about this auction until I filed a reminder.

Questions/Comments are appreciated.

I personally would send him the buck but I might be tempted to include a note helping the guy understand about communication and how to conduct yourself as a buyer.
 
If you accept the 10 bucks, I think you are obligated to make change. I would tape 4 quarters to a letter telling the purchaser that you are not a cashier at a 7-11, and neither is any other ebay seller.

You could always send the money back - does your auction state that you will accept cash?
 
I see no issue here.... if you send his card(s), a dollar SHOULD be enclosed with it

your not going to give him change because he doesnt communicate well or because its not a corner store? i dont think thats fair... any transaction involving $$$ can and will have change, whether it be in person at a card store, or online like in your case

personally i find it weird that he really wants his $1 back, haha.... but im talking in general involving any sum of money

I'd give him his change - it's at least a reasonable quantity. I've had guys send me $10 for a $9.95 win and email asking why I didn't send their change.
 
Just an aside- you cannot put in your auctions that you will accept cash payments. I had auctions pulled because I put concealed cash accepted at sender's risk.

Funny...I had a bidder win an auction for something like $6.37, and I got a five dollar bill, a loonie, a quarter, a dime, and two pennies, with all the change taped to a printout of the auction listing.
 
I'll go against the grain here and this is why. I am located in Canada, and Ebay auctions are usually in US dollars. If someone sends me cash (which does NOT happen often), it just sits in my wallet until I have to pay for another auction in US funds, and then I just send that to the next person. I'm not going to the bank to stand in line to break a US $10 for a handful of $1 bills. I have had this happen to me once before, so I just sent a Canadian toony/loony and some other small stuff back to the buyer and he was pissed that I sent him Canadian cash. It's not your obligation to "make change" for someone. Having said that, if I actually had a US $1 bill on me at the time, I would probably stick it in there (but it's very rare that I have US cash on hand).
 
Thank you for the imput. I will send back the change but in the form that lawbick says where I will take it to the toploaders. I don't put in my description that I take cash anymore because of the reasons that lumm0x stated, you can have listings removed if you say you accept cash payments. The seller is actually lucky that I have a buck on me just because I use my debit card for everything from McD's to buying boxes.

GOD I wish we had a Tim Hortons in Colorado. Thank you for the input I appreciate the help.

my 2 cents is when I do pay cash especially to canada I DO NOT expect change. I figure the seller probably doesn't have exact US change laying around and I'm willing to "let" them have the extra change b/c it's a card i wanted anyways

I would send it.

It would be tough for me, I live in Canada and I really don't see much US cash. If you have it why not include it with the cards, no big deal.

I have send cash sometime for payment and if i send more money than my bids are i dont wait money back. I have send few times 10 dollars when auctions are 9.5 or something like that. I dont wait money back because as somebody said, seller is not bank and if i dont have exact money then its my problem.. Just my opinion.

well...i have had a few buyers send me cash and 1) have never asked for change and 2) wouldnt have gotten it anyway...as i do not accept cash and if they had wanted change i would have sent their money back...but i am a "by the rules " kind of guy
