soooo... i recently purchased an Al MacInnis UD game patch off ebay for $30, plus $10 shipping... i knew what i was getting into with the shipping cost, but the seller never specified what type of shipping service they would use. i expected expresspost for that price... so the card shows up in a "canada post" bubblemailer with a $2.27 postage sticker on it... wow, i was pretty ticked. so i contact the seller, requesting a partial ($7) shipping refund. the seller goes on to tell me how it actually cost more than $10 to ship the card, if you include the $3 that the bubble mailer cost them  along with the 20 minute, each way, trip to the post office, their time, etc. the card came from Nanimo, BC. is that really such a remote area? i told the seller within my communications with them that i get my bubble mailers for .20, and that if they hoped to continue to sell on ebay they had better find an office supply store... soon.

since simple email thru ebay didn't seem to work, i contacted ebay and opened a claim. they will probably deny me, since the only way i could open the claim was to file it as "item not as described" and include some text about the shipping cost. their response was as follows, copy and pasted out of the ebay email:

Seller's message:
"The buyer has a problem with the 10 dollar shipping and handling that he was charged. He says that because 10 dollars is not what matches the amount paid at the post office for shipping, he should not pay what was displayed as my shipping cost internationally. Before he bid on my item he seen that the cost would be 10 dollars for it to be sent to him, and never asked any question, nor was there any problem until he received his package. I purchased a bubble envelope that costed me over $3 to ensure that he got his item in perfect condition. This hockey card was one of my favorites so, I wanted to be sure he got it in great shape, so he could enjoy it as much as I have. The post office is 20 mins away,so there is gas cost, not including the amount of time it took. I beleive it is a fair price, considering in the end it definately costed me well over 10 dollars to send this. The buyer will not accept that price, as he says I could buy an envelope for 20 cents, if so, I wish I knew where?"

so i asked ebay to intervene, moderate if you will, so i wonder how this will turn out? the seller only has 16 feedback, and a negative will crush their overall rating. this is a last resort, of course... so, i also wonder, if ebay finds in their favor, can i still leave a negative feedback? anyone know?

plus, i love how it "costed" them sooo much for this transaction.

Nanaimo is the 2nd biggest city on Vancouver Island, it's population is over 75,000, so it's not remote, and anyone who says they are paying $3.00 for a mailer is lying or a sucker, you can go to any dollar store and get 3 for a buck.

My best,

ken

It's a toughie. While I think $10 is an outlandish amount for a bubble envelope from Nanaimo, knowing you would be paying that upfront and not getting clarification ahead of time would fall on your shoulders.

I'm having a hard time buying the guy's story, but at the same time would have a hard time justifying slapping him with a negative.

Ultimately, you were ok to part with $40 before you got the card, I'd just chalk it up to lesson learned, give him his positive, but maybe note that $10 might no get you what you'd expect for shipping.

Just my thoughts.

I would leave positive with mention of excessive S&H and then diffently ding them on the individual marks for shipping and handeling costs..

If he didn't specify in the auction he would send it expresspost you really have no ground to walk on. Never assume what they are going to do as most are going to squeeze every dime they can out of an auction. I would have just marked the seller down and never bought from him again.

Neg the jerk. Really. $10 for shipping is ridiculous, regardless of what he states in the auction.

This is exactly what you should do. Maybe mention that it was sent regular mail so people know what he does.

Positive, with as low as possible on shipping rating. And make sure you explain why in comments, 10 is ridiculous, but you probably should've asked him how he was shipping.

I hate how people use "their time" as something that has financial value. Did he have to take time off of work? Did he miss out on a big business deal? Sorry, but the value of one's time is usually nothing, especially if said time is a trip to the post office, which is a normal daily procedure for many..

I would leave a negative. Not only did he rip you off with his shipping charges but he is also "out to lunch" on his explanation. As a new seller, a positive feedback will only encourage him to repeat the behaviour.

I would leave a neutral. I'd mention that you got the card but was charged $10 for regular shipping.

Tough call, but neutral seems warranted in this situation and should set off a red flag for buyers. Be sure to ding the seller in the s&h costs.

This one's tough since the seller is new. I have a difficult time seeing that the seller will change his or her ways if a negative isn't given soon.

I would lean towards a neutral with low scores for shipping costs.

And I just looked up the auction, I would ask him why it costs $10 to ship to the US, but only $4.50 to ship the same item to Canada? Maybe he needs a special bubble mailer for shipping to the US , or has to use a different post office that is farther away?

I would leave a negative...maybe a neutral (depending how nice I feel that day). A newbie that doesn't sound like he gets it. No better way to learn a lesson. ;)
Good luck with what you decide.
cheers!

i just bought a pack of 12 bubble mailers for like 5bucks at staples. i would leave a negative

I thought ebay had a policy on excessive shipping, which I think this would fall under. You should neutral him with a comment about the shipping cost. A negative seems to harsh since it's exactly how it was described.

not too much thought

why would you leave anything but positive if you got the card
as described for the known price

if you buy a fridge and the store says it will deliver it
for $50 and you agree, then when it is deliverd you find out
some how it only cost them $20 to send it, are you going to
go back to the store and say you want $30 back???

i'd like to see that happen....

I would tell this person to make it right. If he does not make it right then he will be hit with a negative. Let this person know that all you want back is 6.00 to be fair.

I do not care for people who charge 10.00 for shipping and sends it to you with 2.27 postal package.

If this person does not make it right then he will regret it one day. Not you!
