eBay Store/ COMC selling?

I have a couple grand worth of cards that I am looking to part with , including Cup RC's and my Young Guns Exclusive collection. I'm looking to hear the pros and cons of selling on eBay vs COMC. What are the benefits of opening up an eBay store?

Any insight would be appreciated.

it comes down to a couple of things

Ebay is the winner in traffic and fees.
comc they do all the work.

I am getting rid of my comc account once all my cards are sold. I can get twice as much if not more on ebay for the same cards.. but its PITA factor overall for me. I wish COMC was more fruitful for me but I can't seem to make a go of it there.. that and it takes them 3 months to list your cards which is a pain too

eBay all the way. I have looked into COMC but it just does not look like it is worth it for me. Shipping a big bulk order is expensive to start with. Then I have to pay a fee per card and then wait a couple of months for it to be even listed on COMC.

I would also rather sell on eBay just so that I have my cards in my hands. If someone wants one of my cards I can trade as an option. I have an eBay store and it is only like $15 or so to list 150 cards a month.

Ok look at it this way

1 Ebay you have to scan cards, make a listing header, and description etc. Then the fee's depending how you list and pricing could be more than COMC and time wise added will be alot more.

2 COMC you get all work done by them for .25 a card done over 2 months not 3 months. Now you can pay extra and get them done faster i think it's a 1.00 a card. Now i do agree traffic isn't as high as ebay but if you price cards right and promote the page you will sell pretty good. I have done rather well on odd ball cards.

Now Fees

Ebay you are getting charged the FFV Fee that's around 10 percent of sale also this fee goes on shipping as well. then the paypal fee around 4.5 to 4.9 percent again losing more money on shipping as well. You then also need to combine shipping to make people happy.
Next you have to worry if a customer wants to screw you out of said card saying it was damaged or lost etc all sorts of issues.

COMC
You do pay a higher fee on payout but remember they put all the cards up for you and shipping cards for you . Also no worries about getting a card returned because of buyers remorse .

Also COMC you can cover those fee's they take from you by purchasing cards and reselling them at a profit . Another good thing about comc is you can sometimes find cards that sell for more on Ebay and purchase and sell for double and at times triple you paid.

So really Both places work you just have to figure out what will sell better on what site.

Quick question regarding an ebay store: For the x amount of free listings per month, are you able to use BIN/BO in the sports card category? Just curious as I know that over the past few months, when ebay sends out those "list 5000 free items" or whatever, that they excluded sports cards. I've been thinking about paying for a store lately and that would make a big difference.

Yes you can list in the sports card category.

Here is a quick rundown of the system that I use and it works like a charm. I have a basic eBay store. It had 150 listings a month for $15. It is a little cheaper rate when you sign up for a year. I think that $18 is the normal rate. I list 200 cards a month. It costs me $0.20 a card for anything over the 150 listings. So I pay $23 a month in eBay fees.

All of my cards are listed BIN with Best Offer. Whenever I get passed the 200 card mark I just auction off that bottom card that falls to #201. I just keep on an excel file and rank my cards. (It may be a lot if work but it makes it easiest for me to decide which cards to drop) I just auction those cards off at $0.99 and whatever that I get for it will just be a bonus. I then use that money to either but more cards or a box. It is a good way to grow a collection by getting rid of your lowest cards.

Now it is not a get rich quick technique but it is a slowly grow your worth technique.

There are promotions that have come out in recent months where Sports Cards have been left out of said promotion. There seems to be a new one that pops up every couple of weeks (ie 10k auctions for free, 2500 listings for free, additional 100k listings free) but they all have little caveats you have to be careful of. Most I have seen and used have been fine with cards but a couple have not - then again these are on top of what you already get so it's pretty hard to complain too much.

I think it depends on what type of cards you have.

If they are newer, hot players, or mid to high end, I'd go with ebay.

If they are older, regular players, inserts, low end ($1-$2 stuff, or stuff that would never sell on ebay), then I'd try it on COMC. Saving the shipping is a pretty good incentive for sales.

With that said, I did buy a Gretzky stick/jersey SPX card for my PC on COMC. It was slightly above ebay, but because I had credit from 10 low end cards that I sold, I saw it as turning stuff I didn't want into stuff I do want.

It also depends how much time you want to devote to selling. If you don't want to scan, package, go to the PO, or couldn't really care too much what those cards sell for, then use COMC. Effort vs return.

Thank you. It was September when I had posted that and in the five or so months since I have changed my selling style a bit. I would say that good sellers are able to adapt. Now if I have cards like a Young Gun or Future Watch or just a card that has a pretty definitive selling price I will just list with a BIN and not bother with Best Offer.

An example would be say that I have a Subban Young Gun for sale. They sell on average for $25-30. Yes you will find some that go cheaper and some that go for more but the bulk of them sell in that range. I used to list the card at say $40-50 and accept offers. The problem is that you are competing with numerous other sellers who have the same card as you listed with the same price with Best Offer. You just had to be lucky that a buyer would pick yours over the others Now what I do to avoid all of that is I just list the card with a strait BIN for $30. I have had so much more success selling cards that way. I avoid the back and forth with offers and sell my cards at prices that I am happy with.

If anyone else has other techniques/styles/systems that work for them please list them.

On a side note I am in the hospital right now with having my second spinal surgery in the last three weeks. I have sold off a bunch of cards of late.
