Hi everyone,

I haven't sold on ebay in about 4-5 years. I know there have been a whole slew of changes including taxes being charged to buyers within Canada.

I'm trying to learn everything that is new - including their payment system.

Does anyone have a dummy proof overview of the things that have changed - at least the major stuff?

Managed payments for you as the seller. Your money goes right out to your Chequing now (frequency can be scheduled - but why not DAILY like I prefer), not to your Paypal. Seller fees are hefty now coming out at close to 18% all said and done.

Buyer can still pay with PayPal, or Google Pay.

If you are not a registered business, plug-and-play. BUYER pays HST, or GST, or PST, or whatever, but eBay administers the collection and remittance thereof. Even the USA taxes are done the same way, for your USA buyers. Automatic based on the shipping address of the buyer.

Lots of other eBay bull****, but that covers some of the main points about selling in my humble opinion.

Sorry, 14%. Here is my most recent sale on .ca

Order total C $800.00
Total fees (includes GST/HST) -C $112.45
Net proceeds C $687.55

I think my brain went to 18% because I spent about $50 of that $687.55 to ship the item.

All the above being said, you will basically net a bit less as now buyers will be taking the taxes into account and into their overall bid/offer.

Not going through PayPal is great though. I get paid-out DAILY as said above 'cause why not? You can do weekly, bi-weekly, monthly etc.

The Monthly Statements have been over-hauled but are much better now. Clear and concise.

Just watch out for sales to USA. A lot of complaints about mail coming back and what-not. Everything that is not paper is being sent as a parcel and a customs form basically. Oh and Canada Post told me yesterday everything is electronic now. They still have paper custom forms but it would take longer to get there because everything is electronic now.

Better take a closer look at what the actual costs are.

Sell an item for $100 + $10 shipping. (Assume no tax where you are shipping to)

Ebay takes 12.9% of the $110 = $14.19 + $.30 = $14.39.
That's 13.08%

Wait - then you still have the cost of shipping - lets say it's $8.
Now your TRUE cost is $14.39 + $8 = $22.39
That"s 20.35% selling cost.

Let's say you ship it to me in Michigan.
$110 + 6% Sales Tax = $116.60 But you do not get the $6.60 Ebay sends that to the state of Michigan. So your net is still $110.

Of course Ebay takes there cut on the sales tax (like MC/Visa/Amex too).
That is $15.04 + $.30 = $15.34 in fees.

That is 13.95%

Again you have to pay shipping of $8 so your total cost is $15.34 + $8 = $23.34

That is 21.2% cost of selling.

Take into account all of the costs of the transaction - and you can see that it is not cheap to sell on Ebay, but you do reach that huge audience.

That’s what I’ve seen as well. It seems to be a bit higher on bigger value cards but I assume they have some sort of scale for fees based on final sale price.

eBay's fees are all there for you to see. The above is the last transaction I made and all of eBay's associated fees. It comes out to 11.28%. I am a Top Rated seller so I get a 10% discount but still, it would come to 12.47% if you're not Top Rated.

I sold a card moments ago for $37 + $5 shipping = $42. Add fees on shipping, taxes, an international fee etc. My fees ended up at $8.12. That's approx 22% of the item itself. On top of that, add an automated (****ty eBay managed payments) conversion to €uros.

Because I am going by net proceeds.
In the end that is what matters - it is the cost of the transaction because you have to pay to ship it since you included it in the proceeds from Ebay.

You are getting a better rate as a top rated seller - 12% 12.9%.
You are also getting a 10% discount on fees.

Your net selling fees are :
$61.95 - $6.69 - %.30 = $54.96 which is 11.28%

HOWEVER - out of that $54.96 you received you still had to ship the item - correct? Add in the $2 shipping cost and your NET proceeds are now $52.96
That pushes your you actual percentage up to 14.51%.
That is the TRUE rate you paid- not to Ebay but to complete the transaction.

You can't just ignore the cost of shipping - because you had to ship the item!

And if I sold that item - with no special rates or discounts then my actual percentage is about 16.10%.

PS - If I happened to sell it to someone in Canada then Ebay nicks me again for an exchange fee.

I still don't understand why you're including shipping costs. Shipping costs are there whether you use eBay or Facebook or HI whatever. If you're going to include the shipping costs into your eBay fees, you might as well include the cost of the mailer, top loaders, tape, your gas, time to go to the PO, the cost you paid for the card or the cost of packs to get the card.

You're trying to lump every single expense into ebay. The cost to use eBay is 12-13%. That's it. Any other expenses you incur are on your end. At no point are you paying 20-24% in fees to ebay. I could have slapped a 50c stamp on the package or paid $25 for priority express w/ certified mail. That has nothing to do with ebay.

And FYI, your math is incorrect. My expected net before shipping is $53.18, but since I charged $2 for shipping my net goes up to $54.96. So yea, I lose a few cents, but you can't say there's $2 off my net and consider it an expense when in reality I collected an extra $1.78. At the most, you should calculate 22cents as the shipping expense, not the entire $2.

eBay charges 12.9% fee on the Gross Sale ... card cost, shipping cost and taxes charged.

Yes they charge you 12.9% fee on the taxes they collect for the government.

I notice this now when I sold first card on ebay for some years. it´s something over 20% in fees and then a bad exchange to Euro.

Yup, it's pretty annoying. I really don't understand the extra fee for just being an international seller.

Fee are different in Canada. We pay FVF on the taxes the buyer pays for some reason , plus an extra % if INTL sale.

On sales to U.S.A , only ship with tracking.

Some dude bought me 3 20$ cards , i ship them. He opened a claim before any contact with me. I told him give them a week (20 days after payment) to arrive. He escalated the next friday. Now ebay charging me an extra 6% fvf on sales to U.S.A. Claiming 3 of last 16 transaction add defects , and im below seller standard.
