Eichel and Hischier FWA's: RC or no?

What are the hobby's thoughts?

I see people classifying it on eBay as his rookie (which disgusts me), but curious what others think.

Personally, if these receive RC designation, then there is absolutely nothing preventing UD from printing any card and classifying it as an RC. Guess we may as well reprint 05-06 Jonathan Quick and Mark Giordano FW's xxx/1999, slap an auto on them and call them rookie cards as well?
 
Not in any way are these "rookie cards" Just another autographed card of a veteran, can't be a rookie when you have cards printed from your rookie year and it is now years later. If these are to be considered rookie cards, then why not print "future watch" cards for Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux and them signed as well. Would they be "rookie cards" Don't think so!
 
So If you don't classify them as rookies, I guess according to your criteria the same can be said for the Young Guns that have been inserted in the SP Authentic products the last couple of years. If they were out pulled out of the either Upper Deck sets that year then they aren't real rookies?
 
Still think this was a low class gimmick from UD to sell SPA this year, not impressed at all. As for the question, NO... not a RC.

If they were inserted as updates in other products in the same year, it would be a little different... like Panini Rookie Anthology or the YGs in SPA
 
IMO, not a Rookie Card.... but Upper Deck has certainly done their best to make sure that people won't be able to tell the difference between these cards, and any other from the respective sets.

If they had given these things a unique backing, and unique numbering, I'd say "good on you, for making nice looking cards".

Instead, they reused the # that the unsigned cards were in the original set, and used "2015-16 SP Authentic Hockey" and "2017-18 SP Authentic Hockey" as a tag on the back of the cards.... just like the "real" ones had.

I know they called them 'XRC' on their checklist - but the way these cards were done... it looks to me like they want people to treat them as real rookies.

I am looking for one to go with the rest of my set - but I am not paying even close to the price that people are looking for right now. At best right now, maybe they should be in the Matt Murray, Mikko Rantanen or Dylan Larkin price range - and those cards are true rookies, not an "Update" done three years after the fact. Even then I think it's quite a stretch.

If UD is trying to replicate the 2013 Kris Bryant Bowman Chrome Draft auto situation, it's terrible execution. At least those cards were intended to inserted in his draft year, but weren't returned on time. I get why it was done, and it's a nice hit relative to some of the other FWA that one could get - but not a chance I will pay more than those established players that have a proven track record and rookies that came out when they were supposed to come out

He was the #2 overall pick in the 2013 Draft. He wasn't included in the 2013 Bowman Draft set, but could be found in 2014 Bowman Chrome. There were 2013 Draft autos that were inserted throughout other Bowman products that year. Both are highly sought after - especially by Bowman Chrome afficianados - but both autos came out in a similar time frame.
 
good analogy with Kris Bryant, but even those were still made and intended to be inserted earlier. These are just gimmick cards... that I want too, lol. But these case breakers looking at 500-1000? Not a friggin chance and I’m one of Eichel’s biggest PC’ers. This is a $100 card to me after all this time. If anything the Leaf exclusive has done for me is take a little luster off of UD’s shine. Oh how I long for competition again. Not a big Panini guy, but they would’ve had some awesome Eichel stuff in Prime!

Not even close to the same comparison. You are comparing a card released in the same year as a players RC to a card released (in this particular case) three years AFTER his rookie cards were released. And no, (in case you were wondering) a redemption card that takes three years to fulfill is not the same either.
 
As a big Eichel collector it's a huge let down for me. Buybacks would have been better but what would be best is a autograph program where you can send in your card to get it signed. They are serial numbered so you would be guaranteed of getting your exact card back and it's limited to /999. Set a drop dead date of Aug 1st and if cards are received by then they will be signed and returned. I know it won't happen and would be a lot of work but it would be a great solution.
 
Aren’t there certified copies that were signed after the fact under leafs program? I don’t have one, but was going to get one.......do the older ones have a sticker to distinguish them from the new ones.

In 2004/05 SPA, Upper Deck released a redemption set during the lockout / strike year that contained Crosby, Ovechkin et others and the cards were not considered rookie cards.
IF a card or cards is / are released PRIOR to their draft year which was the case under the old collective agreement and NOW with cards being inserted following their draft year, they should follow the same logic.
As for the set builders, more cards to seek as per the SPA Lehkonen and Honka from previous years and now I see, besides the Eichel and Hischier, others are being issued!

Leaf had a send in program just as LOTSOS described. Hate on Leaf all you want, but I don't see how a program through UD now - just for that card alone, mind you - would be any better than Leaf's - though they would place a sticker on the back, but then again, wouldn't UD have to as well? Just because it's the licensed company with the program doesn't make his signature any different!
 
So here's what I've been thinking through. Upper Deck (especially with SP Authentic) has for the last few years been inserting the cards that weren't signed in previous years into the newer products (famously the Matthews FWA with inscriptions in last year's SPA). I'm not sure on the argument with those, but I'm assuming they're considered to be Rookie Cards still (although I get the inscriptions aren't "rookies" per say, they are still linked to the right set). Here's where I think the final argument rests though in the case of the Hischier and Eichel cards in this year's SPA.

They are not rookies because they already had their "rookie cards" in the right sets. It shouldn't be much of an argument. The 2019 copyright on the bottom of the cards is enough for me to say that this is not a rookie card. Similar to reprints of retro rookie cards, the copyright date shows that it isn't the rookie.

Maybe some of those thoughts were a little bit of rambling, but hopefully that helps clarify some things here.
