Eichel: "I'll be better than McDavid"

Also love it. Both have the talent to be the best in the world. Now, it is just a matter of desire. If Eichel wants it more, he can be the best.

This reminds me slightly of the 2013 draft when a majority had Seth Jones as the consensus # 1 and he ended up at 4 with MacKinnon at 1.

Now I'm not suggesting McDavid will go anywhere but 1, I am alluding more to the fact Eichel could prove to be as good as, or better, than McDavid in this draft. He really could.

Huge LOL from me on that. Although 800 games, 200+ goals and whatever Friesen did is a pretty solid career, still LOL
 
I have no problem in him saying that, as everyone wants to be #1.

With that said, he is a fantastic player, but he is not McDavid.
I've watched both them play and they both reminded me of the Hall/Seguin march.
I still think Hall is the better all around player, despite TS and his unbelievable year.

If Peter Chiarelli believes JE is superior to CM, I have faith he will make the best executive decision on draft day.

Even if McDavid is more talented, the gap is not so large that Eichel can't overcome it if he really wants. I mean, Michael Jordan was a #3 pick and the guy at #1 was the prodigy (Olajuwon, who ended up a HOF himself).

The one thing you cannot know about a player from watching him is how much he wants to be the best - how much of a relentless desire he has to improve. I know Eichel is committed to improving and perhaps being picked #2 will put a chip on his shoulder that will cause him work even harder. Maybe McDavid has just as much desire and they both end up superstars. I would be happy to see that.
 
McDavid is much better than Eichal and will be a superstar. Edmonton will not even entertain anyone but CM in the draft. Just his marketability will make them a fortune.
 
Will Eichel be better than McDavid? To borrow the words from McDavid's teammate Dylan Strome, when asked at the combine how teams could defend against McDavid:

"Good luck, I guess."

I think McDavid has the edge and I'm looking forward to seeing what he accomplishes, assuming the Oilers don't find a way to "ruin" him too, but it's great to have players like Eichel coming in from the same draft. I love seeing young stars storm the NHL so the more the merrier. Makes for exciting hockey and exciting scoring races.
 
Well I can see that I am in the minority here but I have to say I don't like it. First, its Tim Murray who says that Eichel said to him and other teams that he will be better than McDavid. WTF? Keep your mouth shut and if you believe that is really true, PROVE IT.

Now the backtracking begins. Look at the other interview with Eichel where he says, and I quote "I wasn't saying I would be better than Connor McDavid" Who said what now?

Seriously, I don't give two flying Fs who is better than who at this point and I'm not going to debate that. My problem is the sh!tshow that guys like this can become. guys like Subban especially. STFU and play the game. When you talk big and then end up golfing every spring it just makes you look stupid. I wish for more guys played the game like Brett Hull. A very muted celebration after a goal for two reasons. One, he almost feels embarrassed that he scored. Two, some over the top crap celebration only serves to fire the other team up. Score your goal, small high five to your teammates, go to the bench and sit.

Sorry for going a little off topic but the cockiness of some athletes really gets me. I played at a high level and I always used the other teams actions to add to my motivation. Don't give them anything to hang on the dressing room wall Jack.

I personally think McDavid will have a better career but Eichel literally couldn't have done anything else this season besides winning a national championship. He scored an obscene amount of points as a 17 year old versus men and dominated in a fashion that hasn't been seen in the NCAA since Paul Kariya.

I believe that Eichel didn't want this public. The debate won't be revelative for a couple of years.

I mean people can argue about rather one prospect is better or greats like Lemieux Gretzky or Yzerman... UT would anyone argue a 21 year old version of those guys wouldn't may any team better....
 
All I will say is I love Eichel's attitude, he is a fun natured kid. Putting Don Cherry on the spot during Coaches Corner was great, you could tell Don wasn't sure what to do or say and Jack was just standing there laughing. That's what I want from a player, knows how to get the job done on the ice, but off the ice he can have fun in the spotlight instead of being boring and giving the same old "We take it one game at a time" robot response.
 
Shows confidence and motivation. I don't know about you guys, but in my opinion, those are 2 qualities that are pretty darn good for a young guy to have. Who wouldn't want their draft pick to be motivated to try and be better than McDavid? It's a challenge, and added fuel to the fire especially for Eichel. It's (99.99%) guaranteed he goes #2 - he wants to go out and prove he could have been #1. He wants to be the best, and you can't blame a kid for wanting to be the best he can be.

Can't wait to have him in Buffalo

Oilers kill number 1 picks so maybe he will be better. I love Edmonton but they certainly aren't a very good place for young star players.
