End Auction Early Fee on eBay ???

I just ended an auction tonight because there was a spelling error on my auction title, and I noticed my account balance went up. So I clicked on my Seller Account, and noticed this new eBay fee...

End Auction-style listings early fee US $5.60 :whatthehell:

This hurts especially CAD currency is in the toilet.

Auction was $56 at the time, so basically 10% penalty fee to end auction early. This is NEW !!! Was this in eBay Announcement or Bulletin that I missed? Started this month? Wow, this is crazy what eBay is doing... Listing Fee, Buy It Now Fee, 10% Final Value Fee, and now 10% End Auction Early Fee.

It's not worth selling on eBay anymore !
 
I think it has been in place for at least a few months now and was supposed to stop people from ending auctions for not so legitimate reasons. I have learned the hard way to make sure I have everything perfect before submitting a large chunk of listings, otherwise if someone bids, you're stuck.
 
That is the normal fee that eBay charges for their Final Value Fee. 10% of the ending price. Nothing new. If you had canceled the bids first and brought it back to a no bid status before ending it there would not have been any fees.

You might be getting a payment from the current high bidder when you ended the auction early too. Chances are eBay sent them an end of auction notice. Click on the Send Invoice option in my eBay and it will tell you if eBay already sent them an Invoice. At the top of the page where your Invoice appears.

I ended a few auctions last month (September) and did not see this "End Auction-Style listings early fee" in my seller account.

This is the first auction I ended in October, and noticed this change.

This sucks... paying 10% eBay fee for spelling mistake.

Ending an auction-style listing early once it has received a bid can lead to disappointed and frustrated buyers who may be less likely to bid on listings the next time around. For this reason, we may charge a fee if you end a listing early. This fee is equal to the final value fee you would have paid if the listing had ended on its own and sold for the highest bid received at the time you ended the listing.

We charge this fee if you cancel bids and end an auction-style listing early without a buyer.

We don't charge this fee if you end an auction-style listing early and sell to the high bidder. (In this case, normal final value fees apply.)

This fee doesn't apply to listings in the Real Estate and eBay Motors vehicle categories, and the Classified Ads selling format.

Because we understand that sometimes it may be necessary to end a listing early, we don't charge a fee for the first auction-style listing you end early (where a fee applies) per calendar year (January 1 to December 31).

Straight from the horse's mouth. Or in eBay's case, perhaps the opposite end of the animal.

Thanks Dave... I guess cancelling bids would not help either. Anyways, I phoned eBay (waited for 12 minutes) and the girl basically read the scripts word for word and said No.
 
If you cancel the bids you don't have to end the item. Just edit the mistake. Message the bidders and tell them the reason you have to cancel their bids. Most people will come back and bid. I've done this before. You can edit any item that has no bids until 12 hours are left in the auction.
 
I actually think this is a GOOD thing. Too many sellers list an item at auction and cancel it after many buyers have placed bids. I used to do it as well. It's not cool. If you list something at auction, you are letting it go to the highest bidder. That's why I prefer to use BIN/BO listings. This way I know my cards won't sell for less than I want them to.
 
It's ebay's way of making you keep the auction up or take a hit if you don't . Main reasons i see

1) You end early to sell off line to a member who offered you a good amount for item .

2) the auction isn't as high as you expected it to go so you cancel so you don't lose money.

3) Ebay has to make money off you .
 
BUT, if you relist the item and it sells within 90 days, they will "credit" you your money back. That's what i understand.
 
I would be interested in knowing if the re-list results in a credit of the fee. As I'm assuming the OP intends on re-listing with the spelling mistake corrected.

Does eBay charge you the FVF on the price the auction is at when it's ended? If so, couldn't you change the price to $0.99 and end it right away?
 
But if you get the full value refunded when relisted (and then sold), it would be irrelevant.

I guess if you ended the auction early with no intention of re-listing...that would be a different story.

I re-listed the item and there is no "credit" for the fee. I argued with the eBay customer service rep for about 6 minutes (after waited 12 minutes), and I realized there's no point. She's just following the scripts word for word and doing her job.

I guess it's good info for myself, and others... watch out for the End Auction Early Fee. It's ridiculous, 10% fee USD is a big chunk out of seller's pocket. If I'm selling a popular card like Mackinnon, is it worth paying $200 or $300 eBay fee when I can just sell the card on HI, or Kijiji, or other forums?

Was the auction a "re-list" or would it be considered a new listing? And has the re-listed item sold yet?

Is there a chance to recover your final value fees once the card sells for the second time? I'd like to think so. I dunno....is it worth contacting ebay to find out once the auction ends?
