I have been getting alot of PM's from members with general comic questions. I thought it might be best if I start a thread to deal with them since alot of them are similar questions. If you have a question on a character, title, issue, 1st app etc feel free to post it here. I am still more then happy to answer any and all PM's but I though a general question thread might serve the entire community better.

QUESTIONS - Answers

1)

Golden/Silver/Bronze/Modern ages - appx start/end dates

General rule used in the hobby. Some sites and dealers slightly adjust the years, however the list below is a rough random timeline used by most collectors.

Platinum 1897-1930
Golden 1930-1960
Silverage 1960-1970
Bronze 1970-1980
Copper 1980-1990 (some people don't use Copper)
Modern 1990-current

2)

Comic condition

Grading is usually done with the ONE and OWL method. One is Overstreet Numerical Equivalent and OWL is Overstreet Whiteness Level. The One system is a basic numbering system (listed below). The Owl method is for testing the color whiteness of the comic and is a color card that you place on the comic and match the closest color.

Similar to using BGS or PSA numbers when grading cards.

If anyone is interested, here's the website to the general comics universe:

http://www.wizarduniverse.com/

It's essentially like the Comics' version of Beckett. Wizards a monthly publication with features, Q&A's with writers/artists/whomever, price guide (albeit rather small but like Beckett in that regard), Hot Comics, etc.

Also, you can check what is coming out on that site.

Here is a thread where members can ask questions on comics or comic related products. I will be posting some FAQ with answers in the next few days.

I have a laundry list of questions and general "good to know" items that would be great for a FAQ, especially since I'm probably one of the rookies here. I'll post some of them when I get a chance.

Some off-the-top-of-my-head things. Some are general questions, some are not questions at all. I'm sure a lot of this is found on things like Wikipedia or other comic sites, but it'd be great to create a all-in-one FAQ here.

Who knows, maybe a Complete Idiot's Guide to Comics or a Dummy's Guide to Comics could come out of this! :)

1) Golden/Silver/Bronze/Modern ages - appx start/end dates; general sizes of comics (for those buying bags and boards!) UPDATED ON POST #12) Companies and previous names; example, Marvel was Timely Publications then Atlas Comcs
3) Lists of major and minor publishers
4) Major crossover events
5) Artists/writers of note
6) CGC and comic grading
7) Comic condition (VF, F, etc) UPDATED ONE POST #1
8) Notable first appearances
9) Comics into movies (ex: I had no idea the new movie Wanted was based on a Top Cow series)

Obviously the list could go on. I'll even try and fill in some of my own blanks as time permits, but I imagine some of you could add things quicker than I could research them. ;)

I will try and answer most. However some of the questions you asked are very broad and sort of tough to answer. To be honest 90% of your answers are in any Overstreet annual comic guide. There is sections on ages, grading, comic history etc...

I look forward to seeing this up and running.....I'm debating leaving the sportscard side of things and getting back into comics, since that was my first foray into collecting...

Scott, some were intentionally broad. As for the Overstreet, perhaps I'll pick one up for reference purposes, but I just haven't had the need for one yet. I can take care of those then. My intention was to throw ideas out there to simply get them down, not "assign" them to you or anyone else.

Joe, I understand, I didn't mean it that way haha. I am just a collector like yourself and I stick with more mainstream titles. I do collect alot of oddball stuff but when it comes to some of the older (golden age) stuff I don't know much. The FAQ is ment for everyone to participate in, I certainly won't be able to answer them all. I hope some of you will be able to help me with some of my questions.

Some of them like the movies will be hard to list. There are some obvious ones but there are alot of movies that are spinoffs from comics (obscure comics).

I provided a first app list of heroes and villians back sometime ago, I will see if I can find it and post it, if not I will redo it.

Has anyone here picked up the Dark Tower series? I heard they were coming out back when, and never found them at the local shop...of course I don't get in there too often these days.

If you picked it up, how was it? Artwork good?

A little more basic answer than I was hoping...

How was the artwork? Who did it?

Have you read the novels? If so how does it compare in handling such an epic storyline?
