First my updates...

February was good for my 54-55 set. I picked up these three...

I was pretty happy. Knocked out three cards, all in PSA 7 condition. I guess the downside was they weren't very expensive which leaves me with quite a bit of the pie still to come! I really enjoy this set and it's fun actually trying to win auctions again ;). I haven't added anything yet in March as I'm working on pacing myself on this one...

The updates for the 80-81 Topps set for February were small, but big impact for me. First...

I had originally figured that PSA 9s of the key cards might run a bit high for me (I realize Topps isn't OPC), but I've thrown caution to the wind! I don't want to have to 'upgrade' later. The next one I picked up really surprised me, since I forget to watch the end of it...

It's also my first 'vintage' graded HOF RC, so it was a double bonus :)

Now for this month's sanity check...

I'm really having more fun with the 80-81 set than I ever expected, but I'm realizing just how big a set it is. I've picked up several more already in March, but I'm still only 6% complete (248 still needed)! As I browse through the population report (does anyone know how often they actually update it?), I'm noticing several cards where 9s don't exist or they are in 'very' short supply (it seems like there are really only 3-5 collectors seriously pursuing the set). I'm not getting discouraged or deterred at all - don't worry. I'm just wondering if I don't need to get to a point where I'm sending cards in myself... But where to start?

Is it worthwhile to buy an unopened box to bust? I'm seriously contemplating this one anyways since a) it is a personal favorite set and b) would give me a nice celebration of 30 years of collecting. I know that vending boxes are usually preferred for grading, but I haven't seen one even listed since I started this project. It seems like wax is available, if not expensive. I'm hoping some of the experts here can either reassure me that the waves aren't too big to swin through, help guide me into calmer waters, or just save me!

Please, let me know your thoughts!

Great post and great pickups!

You are smart to pull the trigger on the PSA 9 Gretz so you don't have to upgrade later. I have made that mistake before and have learned patience is the best way to build the perfect set.

As for cracking old wax to get high grade cards, I wouldn't do it. I too am chasing a set on the registry, and there are some cards (usually really cheap commons) which have a population of 0. I have bought a box of vintage in the past thinking I could send a bunch in for my 9's and 10's and was very disappointed. Just because they are "pack fresh" does not make them centered enough or have a perfect enough surface or edges to get your 10.

I would hunt for the perfect singles in card shops and shows instead and send them in. As for the population report, it is my understanding it is automatically updated every time somebody has a card graded, though I could be wrong.

Good Luck and happy collecting!
