I won't go into details as to what led up to this, I will just say like many others, I have wasted enough time and energy trying to get redemptions and "lost in the mail" cards from Upper Deck. I'm sure the Upper Deck apologists will shoot holes in this, but I really don't care, so fire away.

Barry and Mr. Carlin,

It has been another month, and nothing from Upper Deck, not even a contact saying "We are still working on it". If it takes over 30 days to get a response to an "expedited" request, then you all have some serious internal problems you need to resolve.

This will be my final contact to your company. First, I will say thank you for all of your assistance in the past Mr. Carlin. You have been honest and helpful in many ways. However, I believe you are in a position that does not allow you to provide for your customers like you used to. Your company really shot themselves in the foot with the NHL sole license issue, and in my opinion (which is shared by many others as you already know) Upper Deck has failed miserably. Your bottom line might not show that (which is all that really matters to Mr. McWilliam), but in the majority publics opinion, this has been nothing short of a complete disaster.

I have sold off 99% of my collection, and have given up the card hobby. I will not place sole blame on Upper Deck, but I will tell you that Upper Deck played a major role in my decision. I used to have fun with cards, my son and I used to open boxes, build sets, and have fun enjoying the cards. Now you have turned it into gambling, and basically a lottery. It is next to impossible to build sets like we used to, and there really is no fun anymore in this hobby, thanks in large part to your horrible quality control, and truly pathetic redemption program. I won't even get into the customer service issues; I think you know where I and many others stand on this.

I would wish you luck and success in the future, but it is painfully obvious you need no luck, like most companies who have a monopoly. It is very apparent the only thing that matters to Upper Deck is how they can su.ck as much money out of their customers while putting out a product with garbage quality control. You really hit a home run with "The Cup"; however, if there was no Crosby or Ovechkin in the set, it would have been a complete failure and I doubt you would have even put that product out. You su.cked every penny out of the Crosby/Ovechkin hype, and really turned a lot of long time hobbyists against you in the process. Very high percentage of damaged cards, autographs that were smudged and faint, and zero replacement cards available equals a complete lack of caring and a classless act of disgusting business practice. For $350 a pack, you would think there would have been more care in making sure the customers got a quality product. Instead, you rushed it into the market, threw quality control out the door, and then told customers to shove it when they received damaged cards. Honestly, I don't know how you get away with it; any other company would be sued for such negligent and gutless business practices.

At this point I will let my wallet and my voice do the talking. You have heard what I have to say, and I will take my $30,000 a year and do something more meaningful with it. I am also aware of the package presented to Mr. Carlin at the Toronto Expo on behalf of many hobbyists. I am filing my grievance with the Better Business Bureau today. I gave your company the benefit of the doubt for over a decade, and nothing has gotten better. Truth be told, everything is worse. You had ample time and opportunity to resolve issues, it took numerous phone calls, emails, and letters to get simple issues resolved, unfortunately many are still unresolved. I am done wasting my time and money.

I am unaware of your history with UD leading to this point, but I can understand most of your sentiment even if I am confused about what (if anything) you are hoping to garner from this letter. It is clear that you wrote it while fairly steamed, and perhaps that situation worsened while writing it - that will likely decrease any chance you had of getting a response from them, if that even matters to you.

Congrats on your decision to sell off your collection and hopefully you are able to stick to it. Speaking with your wallet is the only really action of any consequence you can do.

Hey Tony,

Very nicely worded letter. You have spoken for many of us, especially on the redemption issue. I'm not sure you'll garner a response from UD, but speaking with your wallet can do wonders. Good luck with the letter and keep us updated if they actually respond. Thanks.

Bruce

I think it is very well written, and respectful at the same time. They may not respond, and if they care, they'll be getting a great point presented to them. It's a great change from the negative e-mails and letters you hear about where those that wrote them expect good service from afterwards.

I think guys like Chris Carlin (not sure who Barry is), Karvin Cheung and Chad Capone are put in a tough position. They work for UD, so they have to represent UD the best way they can. The tough part comes when UD isn't exactly making it easy for them.

I seriously doubt you'll get a response from UD as that letter probably has a date with the garbage bin once the UD rep reads the first couple paragraphs but fighting back with your wallet is the best thing you can do to make them get the message. Hopefully UD doesn't get the exclusive renewed so they'll actually have to care about how they run their business but I seriously doubt that will happen.

I have sent several letters resembling this one to Chris Carlin. The only response I have ever gotten is "We are sorry you feel this way" bullcrap. They never own up to their mistakes and they only care about the bottom line. I wish In the Game, Topps and Pacific still had licenses. This way, it keeps everyone in check as they have to compete with one another. I have been thinking of starting a petition against this monopoly and send it to the NHL. If I can get enough people to agree and sign it, maybe we can finally be heard!

As pointed out in this letter, the point will never get across to UD because all they care about is the bottom line, and at the end of the day, they are selling products at a high rate...so they are "successful." They don't have to care, and they won't care.

As far as Carlin being put in a tough position, I thought that once myself, but now believe otherwise. I think he cares just as much as everyone else that works there and owns that company. I don't buy the whole, "his hands are tied" bs....he just simply doesn't care anymore, just like the rest of them.

Good to see they are driving so many of us from the hobby, granted my decision was not soley based on UD, it had to do with a few other things, but I would say it is a 50-50 split.

Nice letter, to bad you wasted your time typing it, they could honestly care less. I plan on filing with the BBB shortly as well as pondering other ideas.

Chris Carlin has a group of people that he chooses to take care of and doesn't care about any of the others. Its a complete joke, not him as the position he has at a large company but him as a person. I have proof of his blatant lies to me, he knows this because I already pointed them out. He had a weak attempt of random free cards to cheer me up and failed big time. I was not surprised to say the least. The company is a complete joke, sooner or later they will realize while they are playing their little money printing game that they are ruining a hobby, if ITG manages to get back a nhl license when the contract is up (which i doubt) they (ud) will be in serious trouble. They are pissing off the wrong people in the hobby, not just guys who spend $10 a week. Chris knows how I feel and I will never stop speaking the truth, I could care less if people get upset, if mods dont agree and want to delete or lock posts. Until its cleaned up there is no point to "accept" like so many others do and many of us have in the past.

If anyone can PM me the contact info for Mr. Carlin I would very much appreciate it. I would like to find out when a redemption I have been waiting 6 months for will be sent.

Tony, Vinny and any one else thinking about filing with the BBB, take a moment to consider this:

I still maintain the distribution list for everyone that took part in the protest. You all received information about the BBB, and how to effectively drive the point home.

I agree that they (UD) have had adequate time to make something happen, yet have not. So how about I contact all the participants and give them one single filing date (and website) so that they all hit at the same time?

Tony and Vin you two guys mentioned it specifically, so could I ask you to drop me a PM if this sounds interesting? I would really like to hear from y'all before I "rally the troops" ;)

Single best idea that I've seen in any of these UD complaint threads.

I don't think the "vote with your wallet" thing is going to work. The bottom line is that UD is still selling out their products to the major distributors... who in turn sell them to regional vendors... who in turn sell them to the smaller dealers... who in turn sell them to the common folk. It will take a massive boycott of product buying AND a lot of time before it's even a blip on the UD radar. Even then... it's "just hockey" to them.

I'd love to see if everyone hits the BBB at the same time what will happen. Good luck to all of the participants. :)

I like the thoughts of this thread... we're all in the hockey section here on HI, but I'm sure similar threads must be going through the baseball, basketball, football, etc., sections too. Surely they don't just pick on the hockey collectors to do redemptions and handle with crappy customer service? Correct me if I'm wrong, please!

I am a very large spender on hockey... and due to my line of work I have access to several "industry professionals" and have discussed the redemption process with one of those professionals. A huge hit to the BBB is a fantastic idea, and if that doesn't help the poop hit the fan, there is a much more serious way to get their attention. However, until the BBB idea proceeds then there is no point discussing any other manner of getting their attention.

Glenn, kudos on you again for jumping to the front of the line to lead this.

Hit me, too, Glenn. Based on your request/report from the Expo, I contacted Chris to tell him I was one of the people you'd referenced with the issues of being mislead, etc.... didn't even garner a reply.

That sounds like a great idea.

It also reminds me of a Canadian comedian, Jeremy Hotz.

"Lets just leave and go bowling. Wouldn't that be great? Imagine the face of the guy behind the desk. We bust through the doors; 'We're here!' 'Holy ****! I don't have SHOES for these people!'"

Yes, random. :)

Anyways, good idea Glenn.

I was not on your list of people contacted about this but would like to be. Glenn, if you could PM me, I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Frank

Tony,
Even though you and I didn't start on the right foot, I consider you a good part of ze hobby and am sad you are leaving.

Collecting is supposed to be fun. Redemptions are meant to try and include value when the company can't provide it in hand before the product launches. UD just seems to lead people on and on with redemptions.

I'm out of the loop - "the package presented to Mr. Carlin at the Toronto Expo"?? What exactly is the substance of the complaint that will be filed with the BBB?

Personally, I've written UD regarding the BAP Draft Redemptions, but haven't heard a peep from them.

Having dealt with the process in the past, I would be willing to help any individual board member (or group of board members) draft their complaint.

WOW  I haven't heard back from anyone that was going to contact Chris so it just stayed out of my mind. Your comment is very concerning (don't mistake that as it being surprising).

I will personally take it up with him after our next phase ;) How did you contact him, and can you email/PM me a copy?

Thanks
Glenn

Glenn you know my stance on this whole mess. Basically from being screwed over and seeing others as well. It's to a point where it has nothing to do with a "freebie" to fix it, how about fixing the issue instead. It got kicked it up a notch when you mentioned the whole free steen about the ao bd story.
