Yes, after some soul searching, I believe I am throwing in the towel. Never thought I would say this but I am done. I am not going to go into all the reasons why, but for me personally it’s the integrity of the hobby that is in question and it has seemed to lose most of its luster for me over the last months. I seem to be spending more and more, cards are harder and harder to find and waiting 16+ months for cards (so far) is just not acceptable for me are some of the main reasons why.:(

Currently I am planning to move everything and make a complete break from the hobby, I may keep some interesting items but mostly all will go starting in the New Year.

Please don’t bash this thread, I earned my time here and don’t deserve the “don’t let the door hit you” posts…..

Sad news bud! Another one of the "Ole beckett boys" is leaving the hobby. Darren, Mike and now you as well. You will be very sorely missed!! I wish you a happy holidays and the best once you part from the hobby. Hopefully you will stop by once in a while to chat at least!! The cards you posted are quite sweet as well!

You did such a great job getting your collection to this point. It's sad to see you break it up. It's your choice ultimately and hopefully you do something else with the money you make. Good Luck!

I am very sad to hear the news but then again I am sure I agree with many of your concerns on the hobby and don't blame you at all! I hope you don't sell everything off right away as you have spent a TON of time on your AMAZING collection and don't want to see you just move it. Maybe you could take an extended break and maybe after a few months then move it all if you still felt the same? Sometimes an extended break can do wonders... Hope you still post and I still see you around as you are one of the "good" guys :)

Sorry to hear that you've decided to pack it in. I've always enjoyed chatting with you about our collections. Whatever you do, you gotta hold on to that Octograph!

Terry - I'm sorry to hear you have come to this decision. However, I've highlighted a couple of your comments above. They seem to be directly tied to the "modern/current day" state of the hobby. Perhaps you might consider sticking with the hobby and doing a vintage project. At least then you won't have to worry about redemptions, sticker autographs, low serial numbering, parallels, etc. If that doesn't interest you, then I wish you all the best in your future endeavors! :)
 
Terry, More great stuff and I have to say I'll miss seeing your threads, replies, etc.... Good luck on the sales and hopefully you decide to pop in once in a while. Happy Holidays. Mike

I am very sad to hear this as I have immense respect for you, not only as a fellow player collector, but as a guy who went all out for a defenseman that was not widely collected. No offense Jeff, Mike, anyone else, but is is easy to collect Gretzky or Lemieux, Crosby, Ovechkin, any big name star or rookie as there is instant value and gratification in it.

Collecting d-men takes a different breed, someone who understands the very minute nuances of hockey and how the d-man is pivotal in that. And you collected a guy who was still developing to boot, not a Lidstrom or Pronger.

Don't think you're the only one who feels this way. I know tons of us on here go through the motions or want to quit. I have to admit Terry, a few times a year I think of ways to stop or reconfigure my collecting habits and, if anything, it only seems to get worse when I try and focus all my energies in one or two areas of the hobby instead of 15 or 20. I know one day I too will call it a day. For now, I am trying, some days with much vigor I must say, to keep myself interested and involved.

It used to be once a year I sat down and thought of a way to make my collecting more fun. For example, about 5 years ago I was frustrated with my Forsberg PC. At the time all I collected was Blake and Forsberg nothing else. I had a Darryl Strawberry collection as well but nothind new to add to it. I decided at that point in time with the proliferation of Forsberg jersey cards to only collect jersey cards of Forsberg depicting him with a player that he had never been paired with. For example if he was shown with Sakic, nope, no go as I had plenty of those. But maybe a card with Hasek I would want or need. That, like everything else, turned out to be a disaster as I went back through my PC and HAD to fill all those holes as I HAD to have EVERY card!:eek:

Things obiously got worse in the years that followed as I started to furiously rebuild PC's from my childhood (Mets, 49ers, Lakers, Magic Johnson, Joe Montana) and with those kinds of teams/players it obviously got expensive, especially with all the new modern autos and game-used issues.

Now here I am with about 10-12 PC's I am always trying to add to......:(

One day I'll figure it out I guess........:o

I would tend to agree with most here and say think this through to the fullest and then make your final judgement call. But then again, if you have done your pondering period, then cut your ties clean. You know as well as I do you can either be all in or all out of this hobby, there is no half way.

Again, I am sorry to hear this but you've got a friend here in me no matter what so please don't be a stranger and feel free to come and chat from time to time or e-mail me. :)

That last batch of cards is amazing, especially the Horton Ultimate Signature Patch and the J-Bo 1/1!:D

Wow. My kudos to you Terry, as you have always been a true class act, and one of the most determined collectors that I've ever had the enjoyment of associating with. As long as you are happy with you decision, and have no regrets, then all power to you my friend. If this is indeed goodbye, then take care of yourself, and I wish you all the best in whatever future endeavors you decide to partake in.

If it helps any, it didn't hurt near as much as I though it would when I parted out a huge chunk of my Tanguay collection....good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Anyways, as has bee stated above from the membership. I hate to see you 'Pack it in!' Cause as Barrie eluded too, it takes a special kinda collector to collect a D-Man... And your committment to the Cat's was impressive & I always enjoyed reading & looking at the new goods that you reeled in. :cool:

Although I can understand the lustre having been removed from the joy of collecting... :(

Terry, I can only reiterate what most have already said. I have the utmost respect for you as a big time collector. You have always chased down your guys issues with a passion that is too often missing in the hobby these days. I always check your wants whenever I pull a Jay-Bo card because you are the first person that i think of when doing so. I wish you nothing but good luck in your future endeavors my friend. It certainly is sad to see another collector go, just as I am returning to the hobby. I hope you find something to fill the time and void. We have all had our doubts about this hobby at one point or another. If at anytime in the future you decide to return I am certain that you will be welcomed back with open arms by your fellow collectors.

Wow, another great haul. So many beauties, as usual.

It's very sad to see you go. I must say I've admired your preseverance in collecting. You have one of the most impressive collections I've seen (and certainly the top Bouwmeester collection around). You've always impressed me. Take care.
