Barrie bugs me about selling out HI and surfing around beckett more,... so here's a post for you Barrie!!!

With the help of a great guy in Mark, my wish had come true! I just have to say that he's a super guy for trading a card to me that I will keep in my PC forever,... I know he wanted to sell, but he did me a HUGE favor for trading with me. THANKS MARK!!!

I was quite frustrated with the average Cup AU RC patch probably grading around ~BGS 8 fresh from The Cup tins - so this makes it ALL the better,...

Nice. But I gotta ask , why BGS 9.5's as opposed to nice patches? Not to take anything away from those beauties, just asking out of curiosity.

Awesome additions to the ole PC! I'm strangely drawn to the AO for some ungodly reason... ;)

I am kinda shocked that any of The Cup RC Patches would be nice enough to get 9.5's. Congrats to you for finding a pair. Most I have, have corners that would hold them back..... I bet the 9.5 Crosby 1clr would outsell a raw 3clr on the bay. The AO may be his best RC example. Great swatch and a 9.5. It doesn't get any better than that.:cool: Mike

Seriously, you have 2 of the holy grail rookie cards in the hockey hobby there and graded 9.5's to boot. What didn't you try and prisitne 10's though?:rolleyes: :p

Congrats my friend on 2 MASSIVE additions to your PC, those cards are absolute stunners. :D

Are you going for anything this year from the rookie crop?:confused:

Should be some good stuff coming in the next 3-4 months!:)
 
Yeah but...do they make good coasters? Can they prop up a broken table or couch leg? I thought not! Garbage! You better...um...send them to me...so that I can....um...prop my stuff up... :rolleyes: :D

Thanks all for the comments!!! Personally, after breaking 6 cases of the Cup, and seeing and meeting friends that have collections that put mine to shame,... we've ALL appreciated the condition of the Cup cards are BGS 8 for the AU RC Patch,... anything over that is a miracle and 9's are very nice, but 9.5's are just out of this world for the Cup,...

I've come to appreciate condition is more scarce than a 3+ color patch.

Unlike most hobbiests, I am NOT in this for the investment. I just buy what I think is neat and I have come to appreciate patches, but I'm old-school and care about condition more than the patch,... always sweet to have both,...

I've been offered the #59/99 3clr Crosby (the most aesthetically pleasing one I've seen surface besides #44 (which is double death in Chinese and I MUST stay away),... but it had a raw grade of 8.5 the seller tells me. I lost tons of interest in it,...

The other Crosby BGS 9.5 is a one color without a signature as well centered and clean. And I have a feeling that nicer patches will be more common in the long run (what drives prices of cards) and that condition will be more important for issues like the Cup,... no one will ever forget how badly that cardboard box that holds the cards is for the cards inside,... You're just asking for damage with movement!

I go for scarcity,... and a BGS 9.5 is much rarer than a 3clr patch,... :)

Hi Rob - After breaking 6 cases of the Cup and having other friends who have broken significantly more than me, we've all come to appreciate the rarity of a well conditioned card from the Cup product. With the packaging (movement allowed and the folded over cardboard holder for the cards,... you're inviting damage), most AU RC Patch cards #/199 or #/99 average about a BGS 8. To get over that is quite lucky. A 9 is a serious rarity and a 9.5 is a miracle!!!

So after my experiences, it is easier to get a nice patch than it is getting a well conditioned card. The Ovechkin #74/99 Patch is the best one I've seen,... and it HAPPENED to be a BGS 9.5! The Crosby only has one other BGS 9.5 and the signature is a little off centered compared with mine and not quite as clean - that one is also a solid black patch.

I also feel that nice patches will be more common in the future as that's what the general public wants and they'll get them eventually,... everyone who's been involved with high end Cup stuff in 05-06 will never forget how tough getting a BGS 9.5 is,... that's just my take.

The #59/99 Crosby 3clr was offered to me in trade for my BGS 9.5, but I am quite happier with mine. #44 is the best example I've seen on Crosby, but 44 is double death in Chinese so I'll stay away from that one,... next best is #59/99 which the seller has told me it was a raw grade 8.5 which is still pretty good in my books, but having the Gold Label and the 9.5,... condition is more important than patch on some cards to me,... :)

Look at the bottom of the 'S'...it's streaky. Look at the bunching on the rest of the sig. It graded a 10...haha

Even though I absolutely can't stand cards graded post 1989....that's a great addition to your collection, Stephen. Congrats!

I think I'm a 0.5 Subgrade on the corners away from a BGS 9 Mint for this #20/87 Crosby,... I remember the condition of the card and it should be a 8.5 in my opinion. We'll see,...

Glad you're happy, as that's all that matters. Two things to remember about grading: 1. It's completely subjective, which is the reason I think it's not neccessary for modern cards. A Gem Mint grade is not tough to get any more, it has as much to do with how much you spend with the various grading companies, as it does the condition of the card. Right off the top of my head, I remember the uproar created last year (or the year before) when somebody had a baseball card graded 8 or 8.5 by Beckett, broke it out of the case and resubmitted it, and it came back as a 9.5 Gem Mint. Right there, graded cards lost all credibility with me. I have seen several instances of BGS 9.5 graded cards that have had VISIBLE flaws, such as chipping and soft corners. Keep that in mind when debating whether or not to have something graded.
2. A raw grade does not mean that is what the card will grade out as. It's a preliminary grade assigned by an "expert" that means the card is guaranteed to grade out at LEAST at that grade. An 8.5 grade can always be bumped up to a 9 or even a 9.5 under closer examination. So if somebody is offering you a 3 color, I'd jump all over it. You say that nice patches will be more common in the future, and that's highly unlikely, as for every nice patch, there has to be a few weak patches, and judging by the fact that I've only seen 2 0r 3 3 color Crosby Cup RC's, I'm betting there is far fewer of them than there is one's with the potential to grade 9.5.

Thanks for the insight! It's interesting to hear other's perspective. Yes, there are inconsistencies to grading as it is subjective and human as opposed to objective and computerized standards.

Strange to see cards grade for 8.5 and turn around as a 9.5,... that's very fishy to me. And your comment about "paying" for grades,... I hope this doesn't happen, but it is a lucrative business and I guess anything is possible,...

I've seen some non-BGS grades 10 with visible corner damage,... these guys are paid to be EXPERTS???!!!

As for the future patches,... stuff like mfg letter patches that are not even photoshoot pieces are starting to come out. I care for GU stuff and much rather a GU 1 color than a 5 color photoshoot. That's just what I value.

Either way - I love the cards and they look great together for the PC.
