In a hockey trading card season that promises to be full of history-making firsts and grand reintroductions, Panini America provided a sneak peek at the latest one Wednesday afternoon: 2010-11 Donruss Hockey.

Indeed, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, there will be a Donruss-branded hockey set for diehards to devour, complete with its own throwback Donruss logo and everything.

Due out in mid November, the product (five cards per pack, 24 packs per box, 12 boxes per case) carries a $4 pack SRP.

Returning to the product are longtime product standbys (50 Rated Rookies, Press Proof parallels and the Les Gardiens, Elite and Ice Kings inserts) and venerable brand staples such as Fans of the Game. Of course, there are plenty new-generation bells and whistles, too, including the Tough Times insert honoring the most fearsome enforcers of the 1980s (including on-card-autographed parallel versions) and Line of the Times memorabilia cards.

As of now, the Fans of the Game autograph lineup includes such celebrity hockey fans as Pamela Anderson, actor Michael Ontkean and folk singer Stompin’ Tom Connors.

Each box of 2010-11 Donruss Hockey should deliver two memorabilia or autograph cards, six Rated Rookies, three Boys of Winter, two Ultimate Draft, one Press Proof, one Les Gardiens, one Tough Times and one Fans of the Game.

I always enjoyed Donruss cards back in the day. They had decent photography in a lot of their sets. I will be curious to see if this new release will be able to capture that essence.

The Miller does not do that for me.

Interesting designs though.
 
It really looks promising. I do like some of the ideas (Line of the Times) and the fact that Panini brings some new blood in the autograph marked (and I don't mean the Pam Anderson/ Alex Daigle dual auto cards we'll see)...

I like the designs and the ideas, but two of them looks like they've been used before...Ice Kings looks an awful lot like the packaging for this year's Champs from UD and "Line of the Times" reminds me too much of "Sign of the Times". I'd be steering clear of reminding people of the competition.

I hope they don't come out with "XP Authentic" or something like that. Har, har.

Didn't they have "Line of the Times" back in mid-90's Donruss?

Elite and Line of the Times look sharp. Base isn't bad.

YES!! One of my favorite inserts of all time is back, Elite. There will be plenty of set builders for those as there were back in the day. And, oh yeah baby, Tough Times? Are those real autographs or facsimile? If they are real, count me all in.

Sorry about that I got excited. I really think if Panini puts out some quailty in their cards you could see a decent draw back to the hobby of people my age range (in their 30s). These sets have alot of inserts we remember from when we were in our teens in the 90s.
Alot of us fell out of the hobby through the college and early family years. I started back in the hobby in 2006 and enjoyed it for 2 years but the last 2 have felt boring to me. I am really excited about the new stuff coming out that has flashes of my childhood in it.

Tough Times autos.

I like the way they also put the "10-11" in the Donruss logo too, makes everything so much easier.

Bringing back Ice Kings and Les Gardiens is great. No good set in the 90s didnt have a 10 card goalie insert.
 
I'm excited about the variety that Panini is bringing after too many years of the same old, same old from UD.

Not crazy about the base design here but the inserts look really well done.
 
Base set? Looks clean and sharp. Me likey.

Inserts? More hand-drawn cartoon cards... ugh.

Tough times autos? DEADLY. Especially if they're hard-signed and they bring back some of the 'big' names from the 80's-90's (Ken Baumgartner, Link Gaetz, Mick Vukota, Tim Hunter, etc...).


And since this product has some definite similarities to UD1, what are the chances it comes out just in time for The Expo...?
 
The base aren't my cup o' tea, but I like the inserts well enough. I'm glad UD has competition, but if this is what they're matching up with UD1, I think they'll lose that battle.
