First-round order for 2014 NHL Draft - Jun 27th

Then why is Sharp being moved?

What's wrong with having Leddy in the 3rd pairing? Plus Oduya and Rozsival are UFAs after next season. I don't see the need to move this guy at all.

As for getting #1 overall? Why? Hawks have gotten good value out of their recent picks. Saad and Tervainen. See how Hartman does too. Just from Saad and Tervainen, you could pick duds in the next 2 years and still be okay, since Toews and Kane are still young.

Sharp is being offered as the Sharks want scoring in return for Marleau, plus the Hawks need to shed a bigger contract in the next year or two. Its a perfect deal for both sides, Sharks get two players who fit right in and possibly help them get back to a playoff run now which is what they need as their window is closing, fast.

"What is wrong with having Leddy in the 3rd pairing?" Thats all fine and good, if Leddy wanted that, which he doesn't. He wants top 3 minutes and power play time to help further his career, which means makes him more valuable, which means more $ for him. The Hawks would love to have him on the third pair, but Leddy wants better then 5 & 6 minutes, and honestly, who can blame him? He is a darn good player with scoring touch and can run a power play, but in the Hawks system, he wont get that unless there are injuries or guys are in the PB. So, given what he will want when his contract is up, it is the obvious "right move" for the Hawks and the player to move him now. He can go to a team where he can be a top 3 or 4, maybe even top 2 on some teams, the Hawks get something of value in return, and he can sign a new long term contract with the team that he goes to. With the Hawks about to extend Toews & Kane with "lifer" contracts, and Saad, Kruger, Nordstrom, Morin, Smith, Oduya, Raanta all needing new contracts, Leddy is odd man out. If they move Sharp and Leddy together, yes they take on Marleaus salary but they lose Leddy's in the process. With Rundblad in the mix on defense, and Roszy signed for one more year, I dont see them resigning Brookbank as he is a UFA. Their leading scorer in Rockford was a d-man, Clendening, who is ready to play in the NHL (he was ready to play last year) and has made it very clear he wants to be up with the big club or traded to a team that will start him in the NHL. They do not want to lose him, he has a bright future in the NHL, so Leddy is the odd man out given all the circumstances here. They move Leddy leaving Rundblad, Clendening, and Roszy to rotate in the 5 & 6 spot just like Leddy, Roszy, and Brookbank did. The main issue is the Hawks cannot or will not give Leddy the minutes and power play time he needs and wants, he will be a RFA next year and due for a raise, he wants a long term deal, so to protect themselves and not lose Clendening in the process, they have to move him now before losing him for nothing and potentially losing Clendening as well.

If the Panthers want more then Leddy and picks for the number 1 pick, would the Hawks move Sharp and Leddy together for the 1st overall? Yes, they could and I think they would. The Panthers need players who can step right into the lineup and produce now, they do not need more prospects or projects. Leddy can be a number 2 or 3 getting the minutes and contract length and $ he wants from the Panthers, Sharp is on the first line, and the Panthers get exactly what they want and need in the deal. Sharp becomes captain or assistant captain and is perfect for helping groom all the kids on their roster. The Hawks kill three or four birds with one stone; they shed contracts to give the players needing new deal the term and money they want which secures their depth, they get a pick that will land them a center ready to play in the NHL right now (Bennett, Reinhart, and Draisaitl are all centers ready to play), they open up a spot for Clendening to move up to the big club, and they open up a spot for Teravainen, Morin (who they might lose if they dont bring him up soon), or Rasmussen.

"Why tinker with a team that was one goal away from the SCF?" They don't have a choice. They cannot lose some of their players like Leddy for nothing, they dont want to lose a Clendening or Morin to a trade demand if they dont get time in the NHL, they have too many key players and depth players that need new contracts, it all boils down to money and keeping their depth in tact. This stuff happens every year to most teams in the upper tier of the standings. Depth is a double edge sword, it is good and bad at the same time. Their biggest glaring weakness is center, and has been for years. They have to do something to get a true number 2 center in there, Handzus is not the answer, neither is Shaw, and both of them were asked to serve in that role which was not best suited for their abilities. So, whether it's Marleau or a kid they take number 1, it's something they have to do. If you look at the Kings, what was their key strength? Depth at center, period. They have 3-5 guys up the middle that can play in that number 1 & 2 center position, any coach or GM will tell you, you build from the net out and center is one of the most important positions to have as a strength. After Toews, the Hawks really didn't have any depth, and they don't have a legit number 2 center. Nordstrom, Teravainen, LeBlanc, McNeill, Mills, Danault, Mullane, Gilbert, etc are not ready to be number 2 centers in the NHL. Nordstrom and Teravainen might be ready to fill in the number 3 or 4 hole, but they have to get a legit number 2 center, which is why the Marleau trade or trade with Florida make sense. If they don't make a deal for either, they will try to work a deal with Leddy to Edmonton for the number 3 pick as there will be a center still available at 3, if one of the top 3 do not make a trade and take Ekblad, one or even two of the centers might still be available at 4 and they can try to move Leddy or Sharp to Calgary for the 4th pick and get their center there. Yes Leddy is a nice "luxury" to have in the 5th spot, but its one they can no longer afford for the many reason I listed, and he doesn't want to be in that spot, thats why he is being talked about moving to another team. Sharp is the contract that opens up the door for them to sign all the other players or bring in Marleau, he is arguably the most attractive player to other teams, so he is the obvious choice to get moved along with Leddy. The Oilers or Panthers would be crazy to not bring them in, but as we have seen so many times, teams for some reason do not make the obvious decisions and fill their needs. Edmonton is a prime example of that, they "should" have taken Ryan Murray, but they took Yakupov instead, and look how that is working out. The Oilers are only a couple of key players away from being a potential dynasty, Leddy and or Sharp could certainly help them get to that next level.

Unfortunately Tony, I don't think there is a chance that the Hawks trade Leddy and or Sharp to get in the top 5. They would have to give up someone like Saad. And I'm sure the Hawks won't do that.

Leddy is getting 2nd line PP time isn't he? Is that not good enough? Plus Oduya being a UFA after next season, Leddy will for sure be top 4. But he put up some really good numbers this year. I think I would prefer to see another d back in return (maybe with lower upside, and willing to take a #3-4 spot, plus something else. I'm looking at the Golgoski for Niskanen and Neal trade.

As for Marleau, I think he'll drive Hawks fans crazy. If some of them can't handle Sharp, who they think is streaky, Marleau is going to drive them absolutely nuts.

But good on Bowman to pick up Rundblad for a 2nd r. This does give them options.

The Hawks don't want a d-man in return on any trades. They have 7 NHL starters already, and they have Clendening and Lalonde ready to play in the NHL. This is why they let Olsen go for basically nothing, they had no room for all the d-men in the system already. I trust Bowman (even though he completely blew the Crawford deal, what a waste), he will get what he needs in a deal and has already made it very clear what they are targeting. If they get Marleau, yes he may be streaky, but they already made it as far as they did without scoring from their number 2 center, so the pressure is not on Marleau to perform at a super high level. They want him for his speed, power play ability, short handed he is a beast and a scoring threat, and he is a solid two way center who can play in any situation. He might have a lot of miles on him already, but he is still a valuable piece to a team like the Hawks. I still don't believe they will get him though, I think they will make a deal to move up in the draft. I don't think they will get Spezza or Kesler either, but stranger things have happened.

For me, you can never have enough d. With Oduya and Rozsival UFAs at the end of the season, the depth on d can disappear pretty quick. Also, they become pretty good trade bait during the deadline.

Keith, Seabrook
Leddy, Rozsival (re-sign?)
Hjalmarsson, Rundblad

mix up the pairings to put vet with younger player. Sharp was on the #2 PP point b/c he's a RHS.

Rundblad is a RHS so I don't think he's necessarily there to replace Leddy but to fill up the RD. I'm not sure if Lalonde is NHL calibre.

I'd keep Leddy out of the mix, if I can. But you have to find a team who has extra depth on C, which is rare. Kings?? lol.

I'd explore Lecavalier, who has a lower cap hit and Philly is looking to move him. So you're not overpaying to "pry" a player away from a team. But Lecavalier has a NTC. He might consider a trade to the Hawks, but I can see him wanting to go to the Habs.

Kesler could fit the Hawks nicely, but the price will be high.

Not sure if Derek Roy might sign for a bit cheaper. I think Hawks have about $2.5M to play. Otherwise, you can wait until the trade deadline and get a high end rental, which would cost a 1st or 2nd + prospect.

The d-pairing you have listed are not what they roll with. Hjalmarsson is 3rd, not 5 or 6. And they will resign Oduya so their top 4 will remain the same. Oduya doesn't want to go anywhere and will take a fair rate to stay, they are just trying to figure out the length of the extension. Which again, is why Leddy is odd man out and will be moved.

wow...that's too bad. That's a huge asset to move. Hopefully Bowman can get full return for Leddy. I'd want the Canucks to then make a deal involving Kesler then with Leddy as one of the pieces coming back.

Yes, but it depends on the teams Kesler is willing to be traded to.

I could see him wanting to go to Detroit, since he is from Michigan. I'm sure the Wings would be offering Weiss in return + some other stuff. Maybe Landon Ferraro and 1st r pick too??

If he wants a shot at the cup, then Hawks would be on that list. Then sign as a UFA in 2 years with Detroit.

With that said, I don't know how much it'll really bite us in the butt. Without a true #1, Canucks are headed nowhere fast. It'd be different if Lu or Cory was still around. Canucks are going to be losing games 4-3, 3-2 etc, b/c even if they can put the puck in the net, they won't be able to stop the other teams from scoring.

Unless the Nuckleheads happen to land Miller (although he wants to be in California - Ducks?) Hiller?

The Canucks do not need goaltending. Stopping pucks is not their problem. Putting pucks in the net is. They have Eriksson waiting in the shadows. He will be a very good goaltender within two years. And could be regular back up this year.

It is my opinion that teams that are not willing to trade a player to a team in their division/conference are teams that are destined to never win a title. You have to take the best deal possible, regardless of what team makes that offer. I think it would be lunacy for the Canucks to take Weiss' ridiculous contract back in a potential trade with Detroit.

The most logical trading partner is Anaheim. They are "allegedly" on Kesler's list of teams he would approve a trade to. And they have the best pool of young NHL ready talent. Perhaps an Emersen Etim and the 10th overall pick?

Everything that I have read and heard is that the Canucks are still asking for too much. Which leads me to believe that they are looking for 3 pieces, a young NHL ready player, a prospect, and a first round pick. If they come off of that and ask for two pieces in return perhaps a deal can be done.

Ryan Miller is not going to end up in Cali, all apologies to Noureen Dewulf. If he wants to be close to her the most logical place for him to go is Vancouver. I don't know if that would be best for him, or the team though. We'll see how all of that shakes out in a few weeks.

I think it would be crazy to get Weiss' contract too, without Detroit eating some of it. But it fills the hole that Kesler leaves behind. Wings might give more b/c they might feel they have a better chance of re-signing Kesler, which could prove to be a great deal for them if they do.

If the Canucks trade with Anaheim, Ducks could move 1st (24th), Etem and Anderson to the Canucks for Kesler. Then go after Miller and have Gibson as a back up. But they'd have to have some sort of assurance from Miller that he'll sign there for sure for reasonable money.

Dunno if Ducks will be willing to go Gibson for Kesler straight up. That would be interesting.

Looking at Florida's situation, I don't see them trading the pick, unless it's some ridiculous offer. I'm pretty sure they're going to pick Ekblad.

Buffalo will take Reinhart, IMO. Can't see them trading away this pick too.

Edmonton will most likely make the strongest pitch to move up to 1st then. But Florida will want a dman back, which they can't afford. So Edm will probably go with Bennett as future replacement for Gagner. Yakupov might be offered for the pick, but doubt Tallon will bite.

Calgary will take Draisaitl. Like his size and can step in sooner than later. Burke will favour that instead of a longer term prospect.

NYI is always a wildcard. Dal Colle makes sense, or do they go for boom or bust and pick a player like Nylander? Highly skilled, but doesn't use his linemates well, and needs to bulk up.

Canucks will take Dal Colle unless he's gone. There is an outside chance if Gradin has scouted Nylander a lot and likes him, Canucks pick him.

Carolina could go for Kapanen. Some family ties there, but Rutherford is gone. Perlini makes sense. Could see them taking a chance on Kamenev though, but it would be better to trade down to pick him later. I actually see Detroit taking him.

Leafs have to decide on going with a solid safe pick like Fleury or a sexy pick like Ehlers. Ehlers put up big points, but he also played with Drouin. I'd go with Fleury.

Jets will bite on Ehlers b/c they can't pass on his offensive production. Also as a future Kane replacement. But also depends if Kane gets traded and what they get back in return.

Ducks could go the Finnish route and take Kapanen here. See them going for DeAngelo or Honka with their later pick for a RH Dman.

I wouldn't be shocked to see the Leafs trade up with Calgary, or Edmonton if they are unable to get the #1 off Florida. Bennett, Draisaitl, or Reinhart are all solid blue chip prospects they can build around for the future. Both teams seem to have interest in Phaneuf, as do Florida, apparently, so he may be a piece they can dangle to start with? Wouldn't be shocked if Kadri, and Gardiner are in play to move them up a bit? Only speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised if something happens. Reimer is also probably very much in play if anyone needs a goalie, although I'm thinking he'll end up in Winnipeg. Also, maybe Cody Franson is available? If the Leafs stay at #8, which is likely the case, Ritchie, or McCann may be their choice if available, or possibly even Fleury? Can't wait until Friday. Love the entry draft, free agency opening day, and the trade deadline days.

I heard someone from Sportsnet say on the radio this week that Nick Ritchie won't make it out of the top-6. Some are speculating here that Calgary could take him. But if he didn't go four that he wasn't making it past the Isles and the Canucks.

The Canucks are super high on Reinhart. Not sure what more Tallon would be looking in return to move down 5 spots. Canucks should have tanked when they could have, could have had 4th pick instead. If you're going to miss the playoffs, miss it by a country mile.

If I was Tallon, I'd be asking for a 2nd and Corrado in return to swap picks. If I'm the Canucks, I'm offering Jordan Schroeder.

If no trade can be made, Florida should still draft Reinhart. Maybe a trade can be made during the year. Plus smart player.

Buffalo drafts Bennett, Edm Ekblad, Flames Draisaitl, Isle Dal Colle, Canucks Virtanen, Canes Kapanen, Leafs Ritchie, Jets Perlini, Ducks Fleury, Preds Nylander

And that is why you're not an NHL GM. You would be crucified if you accepted that trade for the first overall pick.

You're right. Looking at it now, that deal is a bit lopsided. It could have been because I don't think Dale Tallon is that great of a GM. I know I'm in the minority with this opinion.

Tanev would have to be added instead at least. Anything more and then the Canucks GM would be crucified. But with that asking price, the deal doesn't happen.

Florida has been open to moving the pick. If they are eyeing a particular player at a lower spot, then they'll be more motivated to get some other assets in return for swapping their first vs not getting a deal done if your asking price is too high, which is the current rumour.

I don't remember when a team has traded their 1st overall pick in the last 10 years. Stefan/Sedins/Brendl was some swapping. Fleury/Horton 1st and 3rd pick swapped for later picks and Samuelsson. Nash/J-Bo swapped 2 spots for a 2nd round pick. So what's a 5 spot drop worth? NYI's made 2 trade downs to pick up Josh Bailey. Basically getting 2nd and 3rd round picks for dropping 2 spots each time.

There's no way any team is offering their 1st next year. (except the Isles...lol)

But I think they're just seeing if there's one GM out there that will give them some ridiculous offer. I'm thinking they're pretty set on keeping the pick and drafting Ekblad.

If I was really in Tallon's shoes, I wouldn't trade the pick. It's just a big waste of time. No GM is going to offer a blue chip prospect in return to swap spots. Jets could overpay and offer Kane, who seems to be troublesome and will be UFA in 4 years. But for what reason? So you can finish 28th instead of 30th? And miss out McDavid and Eichel? Even the trade for Luongo doesn't make a lot of sense to me. New ownership might have wanted Lu.

I'm assuming the Florida is in re-build mode. So it would seem foolish to also take on a player who can impact the team now, who has a big long term contract. So if Tallon asks for a 2nd round pick and Bo Horvat in return to swap picks. The deal is dead. Shinkaruk? Still a pretty steep price, and backwards step for the Canucks if they're trying to build their prospects cupboard. Even with a player like Tanev, Tallon will have to assess when he becomes a UFA, how much he wants to pay him now, since he's a RFA, and does he still fit the plan for the team.

Learn from the Pens. If you're going to re-build, tank properly. Then you get Lemieux. Suck and get Fleury. Luck out and get Crosby. Suck again and just miss Ovechkin but get Malkin. Suck and get Staal (could have been Toews). Plus you need a good scouting staff to make use of lower picks.

However Edm seems to messing it up. Have to pick goalies and dmen too, not just forwards.

I can see Edmonton offering up a 2nd round to swap picks to pick Ekblad. But that's assuming that Florida doesn't want to pick Ekblad. Otherwise, you're paying a ransom to pry that pick out of their hands since there aren't many high end d prospects to be had. I assume this b/c Florida already has Huberdeau and Barkov. If Florida had a glut of d prospects, I would think differently, but they don't.

And next year's draft is full of forwards too. So it make sense to draft Ekblad. Or get a dman in return if they swap. Florida will ask about Nurse to be included in a swap package. Will ask Leafs for Reilly in package. Would Gardiner be too much to ask straight up? Jets aren't going to give up Trouba.
