McCarty played 11 seasons for the Red Wings. The defenceman's combativeness, charitable work and sideline as a rock guitarist made him a fan favourite. McCarty also scored the winning goal in the clinching game in 1997 as Detroit won its first Stanley Cup in 42 years.

how do you get that badly in debt? wow,
maybe Grinder is doing as badly as they sound.

I just can't imagine that much debt, perhaps it's time to fly that gambling investigation over to Calgary.

According to court documents, McCarty received $538,729 from the Red Wings when they bought out his contract, but his ex-wife Cheryl received 75 per cent of that - $404,046.

Doesn't 75% seem really high???

I guess he didn't spend any of his money on a good divorce lawyer, eh. Sounds like he got raked over the coals a bit, but that(money owed to his wife from the divorce) could have been just another debt he couldn't pay until the Wings bought out that contract. So she got the lions share of it.

Not really if his ex wife was responsible for the kids, that likely includes child support. Or he was paying her to get other marital assets.
