So UD has a case cracker special for Fleer Retro at the National. It looks like I can probably score a case for about $750. At this price would it be worth it? Haven't seen many breaks of it. Are people looking for stuff outta here?

Thanx

Ron

I busted a couple of cases of the stuff. Some great looking inserts, but 90% of the autos are $5 or less. Unless you hit a Green PMG, you'll likely get smoked on value, even at that price. By the way, $750 is so far down off what the stuff was preselling at. OMG!

Yeah I know most of the autos are absolute dreck. I just wonder if people like the other stuff? How many PMGs did you get per case?

I got zero greens out of two cases. I did get about 10 PMG total, about 5 per case, but they were all Blue/Red. Hit a few SP Autos, and was able to get a good chunk of cash out of the inserts, parallels, etc... I would not bust anymore. Not even at $600 a case.

Retro is a product that was way overpriced from the get-go, in my opinion.

For example: a Michael Jordan red PMG /100 just sold for around $550, whereas a Wayne Gretzky red PMG can be had for less than $100. That's a pretty dramatic price difference for the top two players in their respective sports. I know the Gretzky emerald PMGs /10 were selling around $2000, but I've already seen a few on eBay and another one pulled in a group break, so I wouldn't bet on hitting one of those.

The autographs are all on stickers and a lot of people consider most of them to be "sticker dumps". Unfortunately, that seems to be the trend in the recent times. Heck, even Trilogy has sticker autos at $250 for a display box.

I would pass, even at $750, if you're looking for a case that'll give you some value. I haven't watched many full case breaks, so I can't comment on how many PMGs come per case, but I would doubt that you're guaranteed an emerald /10.

That said, I do love the design of the Metal Universe cards and am in the market for a complete set. If you end up breaking it and have a full set, let me know. :)

I should have also put the benefit of the case break. Tops is only 25 allowed total. 1 in 5 chance of a Jordan auto. Other 20 items are high end boxes, auto'd sticks and hats from draft picks, other promo autos. Also get the 4 promo packs for each day of the National which I've had great luck pulling a Orr auto and Howe auto 2 years ago.

For what they were offering for a casebreaker - risk/reward is sufficient I think...

First: It's a fun rip.

Second: That wasn't really enough to offset the poor secondary market value. Scarce stuff isn't going the greatest even now, but it's picking up.

Third: Should you hit the Pavel Bure Jambalaya, please let me know.

need the following Ovechkin from the set still:

98-99 skybox noyz boys 1:144

The entire concept of the PMGs has died across the sports card market. When Retro basketball first came out it was one of the most popular products in a long while since older collectors had something to get to remember their days from their youth and pmgs were selling like hot cakes.

Now, with the other Retro releases and other products such as Totally Certified the original popularity has just died down for whatever reason. Retro is awful and you're better off spending your money on Trilogy which in my opinion is the only decent hockey product in the past year unless you count a couple of ITG products.

I disagree, especially when I see auctions ending for prices like this. I do agree that Retro Hockey could have been executed better. No autos at all and a lower price point for example.... Regardins the PMG's here's a few recent auctions that show hoe popular the PMG's still are:

As a fan/collector, we LOVED the product as a whole. It was one of the few things we ripped multiple boxes of this year and did it as a family. My wife doesn't give two shakes about cards and she enjoyed it and commented on how nice the designs were.

That tells me it's timeless and one of those aesthetically superior brands. Loved all the inserts of the 90's with current players on them. I got super stoked seeing them all come out of packs again.

As far as the value for resale, I agree with Mike, it's TERRIBLE. We broke it for fun so the expectations were zero going in. In fact my oldest son Austin who was the mastermind behind most of our breaks, said as long as he pulled a Kopitar, a Crosby and some Kings, he was good. We pulled a few base in each break so the house didn't come down.
