Philadelphia Flyers captain Mike Richards will undergo surgery on Friday to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, according to the Courier-Post.

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren told the paper that Richards is expected to miss 10-12 weeks for recovery.

Holmgren added that surgery could be necessary on the left shoulder as well, pending the results of an MRI.

24-year-old Richards was leading his team in playoff scoring with five points in six games.

On Tuesday, he was named one of the finalists for the Selke trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward.

This is terrible news. The Flyers really know how to push their star players, its like a meat grinder in there ffs!!

Lucky for him his season was already over. I would have liked to see him play for Canada but oh well.

I was going to say the same thing.. he definitely didnt look like himself

Nope, but for my money, still the best player they had on a consistent basis, with two bad shoulders. Good thing the heart was still 110%.

Mike Richards is a stud. He has the heart of a lion. I can't wait to see this guy as the captain of Team Canada really soon. Gold Medal Mike.
