I think its very important. And your right he couldnt captain them with Sakic there. A good leader can make a good team great, and a decent team good. I definitely think its important, especially when you are completely rebuilding the way the Flyers were then.

The Luongo trade comes in my mind quite easily. He's one of the most spectacular ever imo. I like the Yashin/Spezza too. Ugh.. Imagine Spezza playing for the Isles:D

I find it hard to rank any player for pick trade. At the time, you just don't know what player will be picked and how well they will eventually do.

The last paragraph says it all. We have to gauge trades by the end result and not necessarily how it looked at the time. While Lindros was dominaant early on, a few players in the trade became integral to Colorado winning the cup which Lindros has never done.
 
A lot of the trades that have been mentioned are much more in depth than player for player - there are a lot of salary considerations, player demands, egos, etc going on that make things a little bit harder to guage than just looking at who was traded where.

There are certainly a bunch of terribly ugly ones in here but what about the Buffalo management fiasco over the last three years - I mean they finally signed one of their players back but their last trade (Campbell for a first round pick and a guy that played half a season there) wasn't real awe inspiring.

But I would never fault a team for trying to win and giving up some of their youth to do it - I would rather have a team make some movcs and really go for it than sit back and end up in the same position year after year.
 
With the Gilmour and company for Leeman and company deal, Leeman was at least a 50 goal scorer previously. I believe this was around the time of Leeman hooking up with Iafrate's wife.


Consider if Lindros went to the Rags instead: Lindros for Weight, Kovalev, Amonte, Beezer and 3 first rounders would seem crazily 1 sided today.
 
Here are a few from my Hawks, some better than others:

1997- Belfour to SJ for Chris Terreri, Ulf Dahlen and Michal Sykora.

1996- Roenick to Phoenix for Zhamnov, Craig Mills and a 1st rounder.

1992- Hasek to Buffalo for Stephane Beauregard, who was later traded for Christian Ruuttu.

1990- Denis Savard to Montreal for Chris Chelios.

Oh, and the Esposito deal. Although Pit Martin was a very solid player.

He doesn't, actually. Forsberg has more career points in fewer games. And I'd be willing to bet he has more playoff points that Lindros, too.
 
Both guys are injury prone. The only difference is that Forsberg's injuries came near the end of his career. Lindros' came during the peak of his career

This takes the cake easily! This trade ended being the gift that keeps on giving.

Follow me here if you can:
Wesley ended getting the Bruins 3 1st round draft picks when he went to Hartford in 97. Those picks turned out to be Kyle McLaren, Jonathan Aitken and Sergei Samsonov. When the Bruins traded Samsonov to the Oilers they received a 2nd round pick that ended up being Milan LUCIC! Another way Lucic is connected to Neely!
 
Lindros to the Flyers for a package that included Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, Stephan Fiset, and a bunch of others that I don't remember. The Flyers would have been a huge force in the 90's if it wasn't for that blunder.

I also think Forsberg had the longer stretch of dominance. From 1995-96 to 2003-2004, Forsberg was one of the two or three best players on the planet. The same can be said of Lindros from 1992-93 to 1998-99.

Granted its not a huge difference, but something should be said for the fact that Forsberg had more points in about a hundred fewer games. Toss in the fact that Forsberg was one of the most clutch playoff performers around and I think the deal was still a bust for the Flyers.
 
I can honestly say I believe all teams in the league trade with intentions to get better except for the Florida Panthers. I can say I'm an Islanders and Panthers fan and it's utterly frustrating being a fan of the Panthers. At least the Islanders trade and draft with good intentions, the Panthers are always on the wrong end of the deal and it get's sickening as a fan. The Panthers have been doomed to being subpar for the past 7 or 8 seasons and are going to be contending for Tavares/Hedman next year.

I will pinpoint some of their terrible trades here.

#1 - Luongo and Krajicek for Bertuzzi, Allen, and Auld

Even though Matthias is expected to be a top notch prospect(he was traded from the Red Wings for Bertuzzi later on), the Panthers lost a franchise goalie and the backbone of their team for a 2nd line power forward who was injured half the season, a 3rd or 4th defensive d-man, and a backup goalie.

#2 - Huselius for Montador

Nothing good came out of this trade. A first line forward for a 7th defenseman. This screamed steal for the Flames.

#3 - Jokinen for Ballard, Boynton, and a 2nd.

Jokinen is the type of player that can lead a team and be a solid core for any offense. He also was tops in the league in powerplay goals the past few seasons. Ballard is a good up and coming defenseman but he is no where near Jokinens skill level. Boynton was nothing short of a cancer to the Coyotes. He was put on waivers the year before this and it just showed that they wanted to be rid of him in some way,shape, or form and the Panthers are dumb enough to take him. It was also reported that the Flames had offered Tanguay + for him, making this deal that much worse.

#4 - 3rd round pick for Kilger

Kilger is a 4th line player who never lived up to his draft position. The Panthers could have used that pick especially in such a deep draft.

#5 - Salei for Skrastins and a 3rd

For a team that doesn't have too many physical defensemen, JM had to just throw him away when Salei was already on a very generous contract for a borderline 2nd/3rd line defenseman, tsk tsk.

Which is worse for you: the Panthers now or the Isles when Milbury was trading every promising prospect under the sun after one bad year?
 
Add me to the Roy to Avs for junk.

I actually get a little angry when I read about that deal. It set back the Canadiens for almost 5 years. Some say longer.
