Mikheyev took less money so Maple Leafs could be cap-compliant

Ilya Mikheyev's agent says they did the Toronto Maple Leafs a favor at his client's expense.

“Ilya decided to step off a little bit from an already agreed number to help the team fit under the cap,” Dan Milstein told Sportsnet's Luke Fox on Tuesday night. “For Ilya, it was less about the money, but more about the role in the organization. He wishes to win the Stanley Cup. It's been a lifelong dream.”

The Maple Leafs and Mikheyev initially agreed to a cap hit exceeding the $1.645 million that accompanied the two-year contract the two sides announced Tuesday, according to Milstein.

A true team player. Gotta love that act of selflessness, especially from a non-superstar type player.

I trust there is some altruism in the aspect he took a 'hometown' discount, but by the same count, the free agent market is setting lower prices due to the flat cap.

If one of the big Leaf boys ever makes him pay for lunch or dinner, I hope he says no. lol

Maple Leafs bring back Hutchinson on 2-year contract

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed goaltender Michael Hutchinson to a two-year, two-way contract with an average annual value of $725,000, the team announced.

Hutchinson was the Leafs' backup for most of the 2019-20 season but won only five of 12 starts while posting a .888 save percentage.

Toronto acquired Jack Campbell from the Los Angeles Kings in February to play behind Frederik Andersen. The Maple Leafs also signed former San Jose Sharks netminder Aaron Dell to a minor-league contract this offseason to shore up their goaltending depth.

Red Wings sign Mantha to 4-year deal with reported $5.7M AAV

The Detroit Red Wings locked up a key piece of their core, signing forward Anthony Mantha to a four-year contract, the team announced Tuesday.

The deal carries an annual cap hit of $5.7 million, according to Sportsnet.

Mantha was one of the lone bright spots on the Red Wings last season. Despite the team's shortcomings, he tallied 38 points in 43 games. He missed a large chunk of the season with a punctured lung.

While he's yet to reach the 50-point mark in a season, Mantha posted strong underlying numbers a season ago.

Islanders sign Pulock to 2-year pact reportedly worth $10M

The New York Islanders and stalwart defenseman Ryan Pulock came to terms on a two-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.

The deal carries an annual cap hit of $5 million, according to Sportsnet. The structure of the contract is $3.34 million in the first year and $6.66 million in the second year.

Pulock was scheduled to have an arbitration hearing Friday.

The 6-foot-2, 217-pound blue-liner led all Isles in ice time last season, averaging 22:24 per game. He also led the team's defensemen with 35 points.

Rangers, Strome settle on 2-year, $9M contract

The New York Rangers and forward Ryan Strome will not need arbitration, as the two sides settled on a two-year contract Thursday carrying an annual cap hit of $4.5 million, reports Sportsnet.

Strome's arbitration hearing was scheduled for Thursday. The two sides were reportedly set to enter the process over $2 million apart.

The 27-year-old had a breakout season in 2019-20, racking up 59 points in 70 games while primarily playing alongside Hart Trophy finalist Artemi Panarin.

Isles only have about 5 mil left with Barzal still out there. Gonna be some interesting chess to get him signed. That Ladd contract looked bad when it was signed and aged even worse.

Good for Strome - seems like we've been "waiting" for him for some time.

Panthers, Weegar settle on 3-year deal reportedly worth $9.75M

The Florida Panthers and defenseman MacKenzie Weegar will not need arbitration after settling on a three-year deal, the team announced Friday.

The contract will carry an average annual value of $3.25 million, according to Sportsnet.

"MacKenzie is a solid two-way competitor who brings tenacity and skill to our lineup," General manager Bill Zito said. "He has developed into a key member of the Panthers both on and off the ice and we look forward to him taking the next step in his career."

Stars sign Hintz to 3-year, $9.45M pact

The Dallas Stars signed forward Roope Hintz to a three-year deal with an average annual value of $3.15 million, the team announced Monday.

Hintz, 23, will be a restricted free agent when the deal expires following the 2022-23 season.

The 6-foot-3 Finn ranked second on the Stars with a career-best 19 goals - including five game-winners - and added 14 assists through 60 regular-season contests in 2019-20.

He added two goals and 13 points over 25 playoff games during the Stars' run to the Stanley Cup Final.

Lightning re-sign Sergachev to 3-year contract with $4.8M AAV

The Tampa Bay Lightning re-signed restricted free-agent defenseman Mikhail Sergachev to a three-year deal carrying an average annual value of $4.8 million, the team announced Wednesday.

Tampa Bay is now a projected $1.9 million over the salary cap and still needs to sign center Anthony Cirelli and defenseman Erik Cernak, who are both RFAs, according to PuckPedia.

Sergachev recorded 10 goals and 24 assists in 70 games last season and added 10 points in 25 playoff contests en route to the Lightning's Stanley Cup triumph.

Anthony Duclair signs with the Florida Panthers

Duclair isn't getting anywhere near his actual market value and turned down a deal from the Senators worth a lot more. If he lands on the right line in Florida, however, he could deliver his first 30-goal season and score a much bigger contract next year.

With the NHL season (hopefully) inching closer to a return, it was only a matter of time before teams started dipping back into the still-fertile free-agent market, looking for bargains created by the flat-salary cap, which is forcing plenty of UFAs to take less than what they’re worth. One of the top available goal-scorers found a new home Thursday night as right winger Anthony Duclair signed a one-year, $1.7-million contract with the Panthers.

I agree- he can at least score 20 goals and 1.7 million is a bargain even for that. I agree that the right line always helps, and he needs to figure out consistency. He will explode for a few games and then you don't hear from him for two/three weeks. He definitly took the "prove it" deal.

Washington Capitals sign Conor Sheary

The Washington Capitals signed winger Conor Sheary to a $735,000, one-year contract Tuesday, giving them additional forward depth going into training camp and the 56-game 2021 season.

Sheary played for Buffalo and Pittsburgh last season, finishing with 10 goals and 13 assists in 63 games. He could start this season on Washington's third line, replacing Ilya Kovalchuk.

The 28-year-old Sheary has 72 goals and 78 assists in 325 career games. He also has made 61 playoff appearances, winning the Stanley Cup twice with Pittsburgh.

Washington signed Sheary days after veteran goaltender Henrik Lundqvist revealed a heart condition would prevent him from suiting up for the Capitals this season. Lundqvist signed a $1.5 million, one-year deal in October.

Devils re-sign free agent goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood

The New Jersey Devils have re-signed restricted free agent goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to a three-year, $8.4 million contract.

General manager Tom Fitzgerald announced the deal for the Devils' No. 1 goaltender on Wednesday.

"Mackenzie is going to be one of the key young, core pieces for this organization for a long time and we are excited and extremely happy to have him under contract,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s obviously shown that he can be a No. 1 goalie, and the sky’s the limit for him.”

Blackwood, 24, will earn $1.48 million this coming season. His salary will jump to $2.8 million the following season and $4.12 million in 2022-23.

Blues sign winger Mike Hoffman to professional tryout agreement

Mike Hoffman is certainly taking a different route to securing a contract for the upcoming season. The Blues announced that they have signed the winger to a professional tryout agreement with an invitation to training camp. Back when free agency opened, this certainly wasn’t the expected outcome for the player ranked fourth.

The 31-year-old is coming off another productive season that saw him put up 29 goals and 30 assists in 69 games with the Panthers. It was the fifth time in the last six seasons that he had at least 27 goals, and he’s tied for 16th in goals scored by any player over the past six seasons. Hoffman is particularly adept when it comes to power-play production and has scored 28 times with the man advantage over the past two years, tied for the fifth-most in the league.

Blues officially ink Hoffman to 1-year, $4M deal

The St. Louis Blues signed forward Mike Hoffman to a one-year contract with a value of $4 million, the club announced Monday. Hoffman previously signed a professional tryout contract with the team on Dec. 27.

Hoffman has spent the last two seasons with the Florida Panthers. The 31-year-old led the club in goals both years, combining to score 65 times in 151 games while adding 64 assists.

The sniper was one of this offseason's most sought after free agents. He's potted 20-plus goals over the past six campaigns and is one of the league's most consistent scorers.

The native of Winchester, Ont., has seven goals and 22 assists in 149 career NHL games with Tampa Bay and Chicago.
