Funny personal stories or interactions with athletes / celebs

To everyone who has replied to this thread. Can I have your permission to put some of these fantastic stories up in my blog? I will give credit to those of you who wish to give me their real names or nick names.. anyways thought I'd ask first.

I have quite a few but this is one of my favs. I used to drive a cab and several years ago I picked up a group of people from the Casino here. They all get in are are talking hockey. Windsor is pretty much divided into 2 groups, Wings fans and Leafs fans and there's a lot of trash talk that gets tossed back and forth. These guys are all the Leafs have a great shot at the cup, etc, etc, etc... I just busted out laughing and started berating the Leafs like the good Wings fan that I am. After about 5 minutes going on about how the only player the Leafs had worth his salt was Kaberle the guy sitting up front whispers to me to take a good look at the guy sitting behind me. I look back and it's Trevor Kidd. Needless to say I felt like quite the *** but didn't apologize as it was the Leafs I was talking about. Trevor was so cool he busted out laughing and took my number and I was their dedicated driver for the night. He told me that if anyone I know wanted anything signed to let him know. After about 5 hours driving them to every bar in the city he then signed a whack load of stuff for a bunch of friends and family. It was definitely a pretty cool night.

I have a couple rather long stories that may fit - one featuring Bill Goldberg (with cameo appearances of Miss Elizabeth, Kurt Heing and Rick Rude) and one featuring the coach Bobby Knight but neither one of them seems to fit so here goes one from the middle of Montana.

This was probably five or six years ago now - I was traveling for work to Bozeman MT where a college buddy of mine lived. After work we got a quick 18 in and were going to head to the local watering hole for some steaks and brews - I had to grab fuel before the activities began.

As I pulled into the gas station, which was relatively busy, I noticed this Volvo station wagon driving really slowly around the pumps and the lot - as I tried to navigate around other stalls to get to an open one, he was always in my way - this built up for a couple of minutes until finally I was in a position to move around him, frustration bubbling over I looked past my buddy in the passenger seat and fired off a friendly hand gesture to the driver in the grocery getter.

As I passed, our eyes met - he knew I meant business but did not change his demeanor when I hear my buddy whisper "you're flipping off Batman". Michael Keaton was driving the Volvo (like a twit I might add) - I pulled over my car, filled my tank and eyed down the slow driver the whole time...still not sure why he was circling the lot in this fashion but it makes for a (relatively) interesting story.

Saddest thing is that all three of those folks are no longer with us.

I travel quite a bit, so once in a while I'll recognize someone on a flight. Here are a couple of not-so-interesting stories:

I was once on a flight with Brian Burke. Apparently not everything he touches crashes...needless to say that I was thankful for that!

On another occasion I was sitting behind a lady who was being chatted up by the guy next to her. About 2 or 3 questions in he asks her what she was doing in the city we were flying from (I can't remember where), and she points to the guy across the aisle and explains how her husband is a scout for the Minnesota Wild and she was accompanying him on a business trip. I hadn't been paying much attention up until then, but I was curious enough that I leaned forward to get a good look at the husband...and there was Guy Lapointe smiling at the guy hitting on his wife :)

Also...not much of a story, but I have an Air Canada boarding pass signed by Guy Carbonneau, Patrick Roy, and the late Pat Burns. My dad bumped into them at the airport once several years ago and had them sign it for me.

In high school (graduated in '08) I was good friends with Adam Henrique. We played volleyball and soccer together on the school teams, and were also gym buddies for the latter two years of high school. One story I will share that I find funny was he looked rather flustered when he got to the gym one day and when I asked him what was wrong, he told me he took his girlfriend to a motel the previous weekend... But accidentally left the receipt for the motel room in his moms SUV which she eventually found and had some stern words for him. haha

Heres a shot of me and him on the volleyball team, hes #7 in front left and im front middle (dont judge the hair, although its still not as bad as his frosted tips lol)

Also I am a friend (more like an acquaintance) of Johnny T's girlfriend, and we have essentially a very similar friend group. A couple of months ago just before the world championships he was down for a visit and we all pre drank together at one of my good friend's house. When we went out to the club I was originally rejected from going in because I was not wearing appropriate footwear, but thankfully when I mentioned I was on JTs guestlist they let me right in. We also shared a cab back to the other end of Hamilton and although I figured he'd cover the cab I dug through my wallet to grab a $10 bill and as I proceeded to give it to him he told me to "f- off" and that he got it haha

Heres a shot of me (right) and a friend, with JT in the back playing some pong (which he surprisingly crushed me at although he mentioned it was his first time playing)

The only two celebs I've ever met were hockey players - one was Alan Bester at Leaside's and the other was Ken Baumgartner. Bester was nice enough to shake some peoples' hands as he was leaving, and Baumgartner was polite at the car dealership.

I worked for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2003 and Manny Ramirez and I became cool when I was heading to the field through the visitor's dugout and there's Manny Ramirez in the tunnel with his pants around his ankle. The tunnel is wide enough for one person to get through or two people to wall hug and get by one another. I stop and he calls me over and hands me a note. He says "Can you please give this to the trainer?". I go over to the Boston trainer and hand him the note. He comes back with a tube of cream. I walk it over to Ramirez who now has half his underwear down exposing one *** cheek (I usually leave that part out) and I look at him and then the tube and I say "Oh F*CK no."....he laughed HARD. "No, pass it to me, I do it".

Sounds exactly like Manny. We had a running joke back when he was with Boston: I do it later, Papi. "Manny, would you mind signing for us? -- I do it later, Papi." "Manny, your wife is on the phone.-- I do it later, Papi." "Manny, you have several uncashed checks in the glovebox of your car. You should probably cash those. -- I make more money later, Papi." Dude was just a TOTAL space cadet.

I have one that's PG enough to tell here. I work for the Indians but this was back a few years ago; right around the time the Sox had won their first title (maybe the year after). I was walking around straightening up and I was right by David Ortiz's locker. I'm not even paying attention to him and all of the sudden he turns to me and screams "I AIN'T SCARED, MOTHER ****ER". I about soiled myself before he starts laughing and I realize he has his headphones on. He's laughing and apologizing for scaring this goofy kid and I'm wandering out of the room trying to make sense of what happened.

Great stories guys!

I used to be quite the autograph hound after Blue Jays games and I remember a couple of autos that I have managed to get and the stories behind them. First was Jay Buhner when he was with the Mariners. He walked past a group of people during batting practice and as they were asking for autographs he kindly said he would sign after the game and after the game after a short wait he signed for everyone that was there. I also saw Randy Johnson and he said some bogus excuse that he doesn't sign, but I also managed to get Lou Piniella's autograph after Buhner's.

Another story I remember was when I got Rafael Palmeiro's autograph. There was a kid there and he thought everyone was a baseball player and asked everyone for their auto. He even asked me! lol. This was when Raffy was an all star and he was docked out in his suit and signed for a couple of people including myself. Brady Anderson rejected everyone and said he was waiting for his cab. I believe this was during his one and only 50 homer season. What some success can do to some people!

Now a couple of Blue Jay Stories. I learned to wait at the other side of the street in the parking garage where the jays come out to get autos and I have had some good success. One day in particular I managed to get Roberto Alomar's and John Olerud's auto and this was in the prime of their careers so I felt extremely lucky! Robby was rocking in his convertible and there were a bunch of screaming girls around and one of them accidentally rubbed her Sharpie against his face lol. I also have managed to get Troy Glaus's and Frank Cattelanno's auto who is one cool dude that listens to Cold Play! Halladay and Rios rejected us for autographs and some guy I recall chasing Molitor's BMW in the street lol.

Another similar story, my siblings and I also used to go to games early and watch batting practice and for one game we were in the outfield. The game was against the Indians when they had former Jay and Canadian Denis Boucher. He was shagging fly balls and tossing a bunch into the seats. A couple were directed my sister's way and she missed two. On the third try Boucher made eye contact with my sister, pointed at her and this time she got her hands on it but she dropped it and it fell under the seats. People started booing her lol. We then looked under the Skydome and found a janitor and asked him to toss the ball up to my sister, but the guy ran and took it lol.

One final baseball story. This was again during batting practice and Mark Eichorn was signing autos in the outfield. There was a whole pile of people there and I remember giving him my sharpie and when I went to get it back he did the whole fake out routine and smiled which I thought was really neat!

I haven't been to many Leaf's games, but one story that's clear in my head was the Bruin's game I went to when Cam Neely and Kevin Stevens got benched by then coach Steve Kasper. I was pretty young so I didn't really know what was going on, but after the game I saw Neely signing autos outside of the B's dressing room, but for some reason I didn't go get one lol. I did wind up getting Ted Donato's auto and this was the first auto I ever got from anyone!

That's all for now, but I have more baseball autographs stories to tell, but first I need to look at my auto'd baseball to see which one's I have =).

Fantastic taste on the PBRs

Remembered a couple of more personal stories. One was when I was in a shopping mall here in toronto waiting in line for a Shawn Green autgraph. There were a bunch of people waiting in line since this was when he along with Carlos Delgado were pretty popular. So I waited about 15 minutes and then security came along and took me with about 10 other people upstairs to personally meet Shawn Green! He was a little late, but got there in 15 mins or so and that was a pretty neat experience.

Another story was during a Leaf's playoff game and my dad got two tickets for a saturday game and this was when my brother was studying for one of his major medical school exams. I teased him with it at first but on saturday at 12 p.m he left me a message saying that I better not have sold the tickets.

He wound up taking a train from kingston ontario to Toronto just for the game and if that wasn't enough, when we got to the ACC(or was it maple leaf gardens?) there was a gentleman sitting in our section that looked a lot like Borje Salming. Then I said it was him and my brother looked and was amazed, but then realized he had nothing to sign but his medical textbook. So he took it to him and Salming signed it with an inscription saying good luck. Class act!!!
