A non-regular came in, and said he heard on the radio, that this was the last year of McD sets. I tried searching the forums and net to see if there is any truth to it and didn't find anything. Any truth to this, or just a silly rumour?

I have a hard time thinking that's something that would be announced on the radio. But stranger things have happened.

I've heard this rumor too. Not sure where I heard it though......the lustre has kind of worn off this set though, and if UD sinks as a result of the lawsuit, there would be nobody around to make 'em anyway....

from what i understand,UD lost the rights to print the set because McDonalds wasnt happy with the lackluster sales the past couple of years, its unsure if McDonalds is going to continue it with another company or just say screw it and stop producing them altogether

Hopefully they continue with the set but have someone else produce it for them, I would like to see what ITG or Topps could do to bring it back to being a fun set to put together.

I think the biggest indicator of McD's shying away from collectibles is that we haven't heard an announcement yet of a memorabilia product. You'd think with the Olympics here they would've done a hockey promo. four years ago it was mini jerseys, eight years ago it was the coin set. they couldn't not do a product if they weren't looking to bow out.

If McD's does go without a set, it's a major blow to the hobby.

Back after this years set came out, the local manager in the town I grew up in told me this was the last year they had officially planned to make the cards. There was supposedly a big manager's meeting after that to discuss what exactly to do with the cards. I figured he was just yanking my chain, but hearing it from other locales certainly has me wondering.

Perhaps if McDonalds wanted to see an increase in sales of the cards they should stop backdooring a million sets into the market.

I know that I bought all of 3 packs this year. By dropping the uber rare jerseys/autos they lost my interest. I think if McD stops producing it will be a real blow to the hobby as a whole, because those sets probably turn more kids into hockey card collectors than any other product.

That's true... McDonald's is huge. Hockey cards are not as huge as they used to be. So the hobby gets a lot of juice out of the McDonald's set.

I know at the Toronto Card Show a lot of families come in to finish off their McDonald's sets. It's clearly very popular and has gotten a lot of kids into collecting. My brother and nephew are the perfect example. They started collecting McDonald's cards which led them into the local card shop to start collecting UD and OPC.

I'm sure this happens a lot.

Here are the various rumours I've heard:

1) McDonald's has decided to do away with all premiums except for toys in Happy Meals. Companywide decision, means no more cards.

2) McDonald's was told they would be paying a lot more for the rights to produce the cards and they balked.

3) McDonald's was told they would be paying a lot more for the rights to produce the cards because there was someone else interested in producing the set. They backed out and now Tim Horton's will produce the cards. Why? Because Sidney Crosby is already a spokesman for Timmie's and Pepsi. McDonald's affiliation with Coke kept him from appearing in the set.

How many kids would choose Tim Hortons over McDonalds? My Local Tims may have a couple kids at any given time, but half of what I see in McDonalds are kids. Of course, maybe kids aren't really the intended market.

Also wondering if a set comes out if I can vote whether the Tavares Timmies / McDonalds card will be a RC or not.

Exactly, I'm sure Execs have figured out by now that it's not little kids standing in line asking for 100 packs with their hashbrown. I think sales will do better at Tim Hortons because more adults frequent it.
