Hi, all.

Not doing this to start a flame war, but there is a greater good being done with this information....

Basically, I want to know what you think. If you have a moment, simply vote and give your thoughts below. I'll be in contact with those who offer good/interesting/thought provoking insight...I am in contact with one of the mods to assist with this, so I am asking that you stay on topic, not debate others' opinions or get into moral battles. Posts that stray will be removed....sorry, want to keep this civil.

Do you like 'em, or do you hate 'em? Why? - Like GU, not a fan of photoshoot. When I see a jersey card i think its neat to hold a piece of a jersey that was worn while doing something official other than standing in a warehouse taking photos. Even the topps youngstar game or Jr league jersey cards are better than photo shoot to me

Do you see the purpose of photo shoot jerseys? - I guess the only real purpose is to have the jersey card idea for guys that don't have jerseys readily available, honestly I see it as more of a cash grab than anything for rookies because there is probably a premium for a jersey rc compared to a similar #'d regular rc (both #'d to 999 for example)

Do you feel that game worn jerseys and photo shoot jerseys serve a purpose in the hobby? - they both give collectors something other than 'plain' cardboard, i still get excited when I pull a jersey card out of a pack... until I realize it was only worn in a studio lol

Has jersey cards (gu or ps) run its course? - they've been around for a while, but I doubt you'll see them disappear anytime soon. I still enjoy picking them up for the pc.

Would you pay a premium for a multi-coloured game worn jersey/patch? Expand...
of course I would, its all about the eye appeal when it comes down to comparing swatches. But if it came down to a photoshoot vs game worn jersey, I'd take a one color game worn over a multi color photoshoot if it was for my PC.

Would you pay a premium for a multi-coloured photo shoot jersey/patch? Expand... if photo shoot was all that was available of a particular player i was looking for I might, but I wouldn't get too excited over it.

theres my $0.03

Do you like 'em, or do you hate 'em and do you see the purpose of photo shoot jerseys?

First off the first two questions should be combined into one. Photoshoot doesn't bother me as long as it is neccessary for game used cards to be put onto the market for the new and upcoming rookies. It does bother me when Upper Deck places photoshoot jerseys in a product 6-8 months after a player has been in the league. Auction of the Photoshoot jerseys for charity, as I know they can take a hit the minimal or for that matter just put them on eBay for there own sake. That way they are not taking a loss as they could write off the donations on their taxes or regain the money they spent when they bought them to begin with.

Jersey cards have a had a huge impact on the hobby since they were released, but are starting to become overused and way to common just like inserts/parallels did in their era. Don't get me wrong as I love to pull game used cards, but when I pull a jersey card of some nobody that books for under $10 the fun disappears. Game used cards need to start being rationed while also keeping in mind a player selection that anyone can mind. I don't mind if you put the no name players in the cheaper products, but I don't want to pay $100 for a nobody jersey.

Has jersey cards (gu or ps) run its course? -

Partially answered in last response

The visual appeal of a patch whether game used or photo shoot will place definitly sway me to spend a lot or a little. The times have changed and I'll take what I am fed no matter if it is game sed or photo shoot. eBay shows that many bidders do not mind for a photoshoot patch. I think photoshoot will be in the hobby for quite some time and do not see it having a huge impact on the BV of cards.

DONT LIKE THEM, THEY ARE A CHEAP KNOCK OFF AND ONLY SERVE THE PURPOSE OF PADDING UD'S PROFIT MARGINS.

Do you like 'em, or do you hate 'em? Why? - I like GU jerseys better as the collector is able to place the jersey into a historical time period of their player's career.

Do you see the purpose of photo shoot jerseys? - I understand how the purpose of photo shoot jerseys can be "justified," since some collectors want bigger swatches, with more colors, on the vast majority of the cards.

Do you feel that game worn jerseys and photo shoot jerseys serve a purpose in the hobby? - I think game used jerseys serve a purpose because, as I said earlier, it connects the collector to the depicted player to a time in his career. I'll use Gretzky as an example. An Oilers' jersey places him between 1979-1988, Kings 1988-1996, and so on. Without starting a war, I personally don't agree with photoshoot jerseys and don't beleive they should have ever had a purpose in the industry because vintage jerseys can be used, but they do not serve a purpose for that player at all. In a few years down the road, when people look back at their cards, it will be a shame (at least in my eyes) because the jerseys used on those cards have no actual game-used relevance to that player's rookie year.

Has jersey cards (gu or ps) run its course? - I think the game worn jerseys was a great idea at the time, and it has expanded the collecting base of the industry drastically, but now innovative ideas of GU equipment is starting to run dry. There are still some creative ideas, and I know the industry cannot handle if GU jersey cards were dropped from products.

Would you pay a premium for a multi-coloured game worn jersey/patch? Expand... I would pay a premium for multi-colored game-used patch, especially depending on swatch size and player selection. If I am contacted, I can show you what I mean, in the context of Gretzky of course.

Would you pay a premium for a multi-coloured photo shoot jersey/patch? Expand... I would not pay a premium for photo shoot jersey/patch cards. Once again, this is all in my opinion and I am not looking to start any flame wars, but those jerseys are effectively worthless in the sense of NHL history. I think it especially is difficult to decipher how many photo shoot jerseys there are, and in some cases, what jersey the swatch is from.

Thanks for making the thread, it should be a very interesting topic.

Do you like 'em, or do you hate 'em? Why? -

I like the photo shoot jerseys but I don't love them. I like them because they add some flavour to the rookie cards they use them in. I'm loving the multi-colour emblem auto RC's found in the high-end products.

Do you see the purpose of photo shoot jerseys? -

Hopefully it's to keep the cost of the high-end products reasonable and can allow for more superstar autos and game-worn issues.

Do you feel that game worn jerseys and photo shoot jerseys serve a purpose in the hobby? -

Yes.

Has jersey cards (gu or ps) run its course? -

The miniscule, dime-sized swatch jerseys have run their course. The large jersey and multi-coloured emblem/number cards are still very desirable.

Would you pay a premium for a multi-coloured game worn jersey/patch? Expand...

Yes. It all comes down to supply and demand. In the same way that the highest grade was most desirable prior to the invention of game-worn cards, the most unique swatch of the hottest rookie is now the most desirable. Sales of The Cup rookies on ebay lately have backed up this claim...a unique multi-coloured emblem can bring in 2-3 times as much as a single coloured swatch.

Would you pay a premium for a multi-coloured photo shoot jersey/patch? Expand...

Yes. If the standard for one player's card or rookie is photo shoot then the multi-coloured will always be more desirable. However if one player has photo-shoot jerseys in a set and another has game-worn, I think the game-worn jersey singles should be more desirable.

I can understand the use of photoshoot jerseys for early season product releases that include Rookie GU sub-sets. UD might not have the time to get a Gamer and do their thing with 'em. There is no reason to use the photoshoot jersey in late season or high-end releases. The Cup and Ultimate should have all GU swatches or the player should be left off the checklist. As for the Multi-colored swatch question. I will pay a premium for nice swatches of both Photoshoot or GU Cards. That's my $.02. Mike

The whole point of ever having memorabilia cards used, was that is was game used, by the player. It had a history behind it, and it was neat to wonder what may have happened while it was worn.
It was bad enough when the teams started using multiple jerseys to keep up with demand, be it card companies, collectors, etc. All Star games a case in point. Several players wearing 3 or more per period. Makes it less desirable to have.
Photoshoot worn are a joke, plain and simple. No history, no personality behind them. And costs the company nothing to use these, but the card prices don't reflect it. The idea of using these definitely shows to me that memorabilia cards have for the most part run out their life span. Either that or go back to the odds that were used on these when the idea first came out. Would definitely make it a lot more desirable.

I won't give a long winded disortation, but rather cut the chase.

I like the look of a patch card. Game worn, photo shoot - it really doesn't matter to me. "Slightly" off topic, I don't mind sticker autoes either. Memorabilia cards have been distant to the players for so long now that it really doesn't matter if he touched the card (for signed) or touched the jersey (by playing in it).

In this case, as long as the seller (ie Upper Deck) clearly indicates where the jersey/patch/auto came from, then I don't mind either way.

I guess that makes me the K-mart shopper amungst the Porsche buyers

Storngly prefer Game-Used Jerseys, but I can see where Photo-shoot jerseys come in handy in the case of Rookies. For Veteran players on the other hand, give me game-worn or don;t give me anything at all.

Do you like 'em, or do you hate 'em? Why? - I prefer game used to photo shoot anyday.....with an exception: rookies.

I honestly can see the need for them in early to mid-late season season products where a true gamer cannot be procured.

I collect game worn jerseys as well as cards and can tell you set 1 from an NHL team generally is not available until early January-early February. Combine that with getting the jersey in hand and whatever the company must do to prepare (slice and dice) the swatches/jersey for production and you are likely looking at a product releasing in early summer with true game-worn pieces.

Do you see the purpose of photo shoot jerseys? - See above. Rookies ONLY or a veteran player that has changed team (if team specific material is the criteria, otherwise use previous team's swatches. Example Forsberg Flyers cards with Av's AND Philly swatches).

Do you feel that game worn jerseys and photo shoot jerseys serve a purpose in the hobby? - Yes, only as outlined above. For rookies and the occasional team specific material for a vet newly signed and/or traded, although I would still prefer game used material from their previous team's sweaters.

Has jersey cards (gu or ps) run its course? - No, I don't believe so.

Autographed patches will ALWAYS be the highlight of a product, especially RC's. I would really prefer card companies to make swatches multi-color as much as possible with jerseys, especially in high-end products. Early season releases does not bother me as much but I believe in getting value so get those multi-color jersey pieces out late in the year fellas!

Would you pay a premium for a multi-coloured game worn jersey/patch? Expand... Absolutely.

For game worn stuff OR rookie photo-shoot, I will always pay a premium as long as the swatch is highly attractive and or likely is the prime piece from a patch.

Would you pay a premium for a multi-coloured photo shoot jersey/patch? Expand... See above, rookies and/or rookie year issued cards ONLY!

I do not EVER want to see photo shoot junk on a player's sophomore year issues, it is totally bunk and cheap in my opinion. If a card company can pony up for Gretzky gamers, they sure as heck can cough up the scratch for Crosby and Ovechkin. Especially at the price point we all pay for wax!
