Season series: The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals have split two games. Penguins right wing Phil Kessel scored the game-winner at 3:49 of the third period in a 3-1 win at Verizon Centre on Oct. 28. Capitals right wing T.J. Oshie had two goals and an assist, and center Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and two assists in a 4-1 win at Verizon Centre on Dec. 14. This game was rescheduled from Jan. 24, when it was postponed because of snow.

I know MA Fleury played last night, and got a shutout, but how can you start your backup goalie against the Washington Capitals, who are arguably the best team in the NHL? :crazy:

One way is the coaching staff may have looked at the back to backs together and said what's our best chance to get at least two points out of the two games. Go strong against the lesser opponent on the first night, then back it off and see where the chips fall for the second night. If you match up weaker against weaker and strong against strong, there's a larger chance of not getting anything out of the two games.

That said, if that is the thinking, it means the Penguins brass doesn't have a whole lot of confidence in their guys...

It could be that they have a lot of confidence in Matt Murray, who has played very well in his short NHL career. If they didn't have confidence in the team, they would have put Zatkoff in net and left Murray in the AHL.

Maybe they figured the Caps would beat them anyway, so why tire out MAF and damage his confidence? LOL
