I would consider the Torres/Eberle hit much more similar to the Moore/Naslund than the Seabrook hit and the Torres/Eberle did result in a 4 game suspension.

Since when was a "severe" hit an element of a 5 minute major? Last time I checked it required an injury at the least, which apparently was not present.

In this particular case whether it is a 5 minute or not has to do with the intent of the play. Not the presence of an injury, or lack of. They are ruling that there was no intent and that it was a hockey related play similar to a neutral zone collision with two players going north/south.

Interference is when you check a guy away from the puck who is trying to get to the play.

That is only one circumstance where an interference may be called. There are many others.

I agree. Certainly when you consider the players actions as part of the over all play when gauging his intent. In the case of Torres/Eberle, Torres deviated from a logical hockey play to make the hit. That shows a predatory intent and is part of what gets considered by the league.

No, its the same predatory type hit. Torres has no interest in the puck on any of those hits. Just trying to lay a guy out. Which, imo, is ok as long as the guy has the puck, which Seabrook didnt, yet. his timing was out but he was still looking for the hit, not the puck. Same as Moore on Naslund. The League need to get rid of that instigator penalty and take away some of the armor these guys call "pads" Ever see an interview with Shanahan after a game? He used to wear shoulder and elbow pads that looked like something from the 1950s. Sorry to get OT, but this kind of crap is really beginning to get to me about the league. No more tough guys, just a bunch of $hitheads that think they are tough because they dont have to fight after taking too many liberties. I'd like to see Torres try that on someone like Messier back in the 80s. He might have tried it, once.

Didn't read all 5 pages of this thread but figured I would throw my $0.02 in. I think Torres is the only reason there was a call, repeat offender and the hit he had earlier in the game, he made it a no brainer for the ref to call something. Personally don't think there should have been a call at all, but I am brainwashed by Mickey Redmond night in and night out about hard nose hockey (even tonight he was all for Doan gettin shots at Lidstrom to wear him down ><). The call should not have been interference though, you cant expect him to not touch that puck right there (did he actually think he had time to look down at the puck and coast behind the net??) If he did touch the puck would the ref have called it roughing you say? Please, its playoff hockey you know you're going to get hit if you touch the puck, period.

Welp, lets go Hawks for these next three and get a Canucks win in game 7. Tire 'em out for when they meet the wings in the western finals.

I agree with you about getting rid of the armor and the dumping of the instigator but funny you should mention Messier - I'm not sure I want to go back to an era where Messier would settle things by hitting a player over the head with a stick.

And Messier did the same stuff (compared to Torres/Seabrook) in the early 90s (Modano for example) with predatory head shots.

Modano has BARELY (if at all) received the puck when Messier hits him, and it's safe to say that the puck was within an inch or two of Seabrook's stick when Torres got him.

The game has always had these hits in it, it's not a new thing and I think it's naive to think that it's new.

The game has sped up considerably, and changing the size of the rink, equipment should all be looked at to make players safer.

ahhh - good to see some logic and hockey knowledge put to use here. i think Torres should get 2-3 games. i think Downie should get 2 games from tonight's hit and Kunitz should get 4.

Downie left his feet but otherwise seemed to be a legal hit as far as where the puck was and not necessarily targeting the head (i only saw it a couple of times so if he did target the head then i could see another game or two added). plus he's a repeat offender.

the Torres hit was questionable in nature plus the puck wasn't there - not as bad as the Eberle hit. if he hadn't just been suspended in the last game he played i would say 1-2 games, but since he's a repeat offender so quickly i would give him 3.

Kunitz simply went out of his way to elbow Gagne in the head. there is absolutely no excuse for that and he deserves the largest punishment. it wasn't a hockey play at all. Torres and Downie were finishing checks - they both did it illegally but at least they are plays you see in a game all the time.

the Kunitz hit was just stupid and malicious and deserves a stiff punishment. if he doesn't get 3+ games the NHL will lose all credibility (if it has any left) on their "tough stance" on head hits.
