Anyone know or can point me in the right direction of the different sizes in goalie pad sizes used in the NHL from say the late 70s to what they use now?

I know the NHL rule book says that they pad cannot exceed 11" at the extreme (widest point?) and cannot extend more then 38" from bottom to top.

What were the sizes used back in the late 70s early 80s?

Maybe some examples of what a player uses now (luongo or someone) compaired to say Dryden?

The reason I ask, I am having an argument with someone who says that back then the goalie pads were half the size of what they use now. He says they were 6" wide and maybe 20" high.

I now the sizes changed but I know they werent anything that drastic. They are close to the same size now are they not?

Thanks for any help.

They were small but not that small. I have a set in the house from the 70's and they are bigger than his measurements

I don't think that there were specific regulations on a lot of the pads back then which is why Garth Snow had shoulder pads that nearly reached the top of his head. I would think that there were some regulations in place but not nearly to the extent that they are today.

20 sounds really low unless your talking in the 20's,30's or 40's. Again I don't know but my pads are around 30.as for width,it's widest 11 going down to 9 in some spots. The pads looks like the same type Cheevers used to wear

Hope it helps

Pads in the 70's were smaller, but not as small as your friend is arguing. Similar in width (a couple of inches narrower), but a fair amount shorter (6-10 inches shorter, I would guess). The reason they were less effective was because they were thinner, three times as heavy, and when you fell on them with your knees, you felt it. Plus, when a puck hit the side of the pad, it still went in becuase they were not as "boxy". Shots off the side often ended up in goals, whereas now they hit, fall, and are covered.
