Goldin Auctions - Sidney Crosby Young Guns BGS 10 Black Label (Pop 2)

$25,000. Card doesn't look like a Black Label 10 to me though. The edges look less than perfect.

Downward trajectory of career, recent huge playoff fails = $10,014

Recent events will have nothing to do with the price of this card. His HOF legacy is set and he doesn't have anything else to prove. All of his other lesser graded Young Guns have been constantly going up in value why would this nearly impossible to get grade be any different?

Trying to pin down an estimate for this card is extremely tough to do since there's only two in this grade and I don't know if either of them has sold before. If one did it certainly wasn't in this current sports card climate and it would have been long before the price explosion for Crosby YGs.

A High Gloss #/10 in a BGS 9 grade did $18,600 USD back in June. That's a card with ten copies and less than gem mint condition. There are only two YGs graded Black Label. Does it beat this HG sale? I think it definitely could.

$20k USD? $30k? More? As cardboardnostalgia pointed out McDavid sold one at a crazy number and he's got way more graded at this level than Sid does.

Considering that the population count of black label Crosby YG’s isn’t likely to grow much I’d say this sale could be significant. Whatever it ends up going for is likely going to be a fraction of what it could go for in 20-30 years time.

Respect everything you said. But hockey tends to prefer and pay for the shiny new toy unless it’s vintage. Sid is as far from a shiny new toy as you can get, and he will never come close to matching or breaking Gretzky’s records as many speculated he might early in his career. HOF’er for sure, but didn’t really live up to the early hobby hype did he? McDavid is the shiny new toy, and even with his insanely overproduced cards, people tend to speculate on the hype from what I’ve seen. That being said, the current card market is crazy so if this went for $30K+ I wouldn’t be surprised.

The hype about breaking Gretzky's records was nothing but a media spin that nobody could possibly live up to. It's impossible for anyone to touch Gretzky in the modern game no matter who they are. McDavid won't sniff his records either.

Crosby did however accomplish:

3x Stanley Cups
2x Conn Smythe's
2x Art Ross
2x Hart
3x Ted Lindsay's
2x Rocket Richard Trophies
2x Messier Leadership Awards
4x First All Star Team
8x All Star Appearances
2x Olympic Gold Medals w/ Golden Goal on home ice
1x World Junior Gold
1x World Championship Gold
Triple Gold Club and only player to have captained all three teams

I think he did just fine.

I love McDavid too but he has a lot of catching up to and almost blew his knee to smithereens once already. Shiny new toy or not he's a riskier investment than Crosby who's already done it all multiple times.

Look at Stamkos, the guy has one of the highest goals per game of all time. Was putting up adjusted goal totals on par with Hull/Lemieux in the early 90s. One bad injury changed his game completely. He is still a star player but he easily had a shot at top 5 in goals if he hadn’t run into the post.

The same could be said about Crosby. He could have had a chance at ten years of 50+ goal, 100 point seasons. We all know what happened, still a great player with a hall of fame resume. Easily one of the top 25-50 players of all time if he retired today.

McDavid could easily get injured and become an 80 point per season setup man that spends the majority of his career on losing teams. The fact that his raw Young Guns is selling for $700ish USD is pretty insane considering.

Does anyone have an approximate print run of how many Gretzky OPC rookies were printed in 79-80? Is it even close to the 10,000+ McDavid Young Guns that immediately got graded after being pulled pack fresh?

He’s far from done as well. 100 points two years ago and more then a ppg this year. His team looks washed but still a top 5 player.
