For those of you on Beckett, this is a somewhat different post (some copied material - sorry!), but same topic as I posted there.

Well, it's finally happened. I've realized the hobby has become more of a burden then a pleasure recently. It's a sad realization... sad in that I'm disppointed that I don't have the time to spend with my buds on the hobby. So, it's time to empty the ol' trade box and PC and see what comes up next.

This is in no way related to the current state of the hobby, other than I feel to enjoy it, you need to invest time. Time is the one thing I seem short on these days.

I have three kids between 3 and 13 that all do their own thing with mom and dads help, I'm a member of our local Rotary Club which has many ongoing community projects which I'm deeply involved in (new $300,000 skateboard park - cool!), and work has become a lot more interesting and busy with some recent changes in our corporate structure.

Oh, and I have a wife too... see? Where does the time go? :)

So, without any time lately, I've found that 'the hobby' has become more and more of a chore, and less and less fun. So, if I'm not having fun, it's definitely time to back away. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy talking about cards and meeting up with folks at shows - that's always good to talk to friends. But when I can't find an hour in a week to sort through 3 boxes of Rookie Update commons, or update a trade page that hasn't been touched in 10 months, or can only read every 6th topic on the message board, obviously there's a time problem... and maybe a lack of passion on my part.

I don't want to stick around to become someone who is so jaded by the hobby they do nothing but complain.

I'll still be around to post, and I don't see myself ever disappearing, but card collecting is, I believe for me, done.

No regrets, just good memories, and likely after 6 months, I'll be bored at work again and back full force... :) But without any cards.

I do want to thank everyone that contributes to this and other message boards - you're waht makes the hobby fun and interesting.

Now I have to go find another ****er who wants to collect Hawerchuk... :)

You will be missed, until hopefully you can get back into it. I completely understand tho, and wish you the best of luck with everything. Now, WHACHA GOT CHEAP???? LOL

It's been a pleasure gettin' deals done with you! I'll miss seein' what new 'Ducky's!' that you'll reel in! ;)

As for the hobby & taking a sabbatical. Hey, I know how you feel. Good luck with life and remember to drop on in and lurk about! :D

Hopefully, it just turns into a sabbatical or a trimming down of how much time you spend on the cards. Because of other commitments, I've had to treat it as just a casual hobby for years. Well, casual compared to you hardcore guys...lol. Take care!

I hope you'll stick around HI at least. I mean, I'll throw sausages at you instead of pies just for ol' times sake! :p :D

Cory Cory Cory...I am as shocked as everyone else, but being a dad I understand your constraints.

I know you'll be back, just maybe not with the same zeal. Enjoy you family to the fullest man!
 
Cory, while this comes as a surprise, I completely understand your reasoning. Family is first and foremost, the hobby has to take a back seat to such important matters. Enjoy your family while they're young because time slips by fast. In a completely selfish vein, I will miss your presence on the boards more than I would just about anyone else. You have always been a straight shooter and I respect that. As Brian said pop in and chat when you can, you always have an informative view on most topics we discuss. Best wishes to you and your family my friend.

Cory, I understand where you are coming from and wish you all the best in whatever you do. The next time you are in London with Janet and the kids LMK and we can get together.

Dude, I totally relate to making time for your kids and I only have one currently so I can't even begin to imagine the constraints put on your time!:eek:

Let me just say you are one the true stand-up guys in this hobby and hands down one of the nicest and most polite people I have ever come across. I guess after work, cards, 3 kids and a wife you don't have enough time to be mean! :p ;)

I want to thank you again for always giving great insight on the hobby, taking the time to reply to my terrible mail threads littered with those yucky "other" sports ;) , and for just being a solid guy all-around.:D

It's guys like You, Mike (turtlelo), Bruce, Lionel and others who have said goodbye to the hobby or taken a sabbatical in the past few months that makes me rethink and reconsider almost weekly what the heck I am doing in this ongoing mess! LOL ;)

Yee - seen it and done it.
Just not enough time any more for a Hobby that really requires almost daily
interaction. Unless you have older kids - many do not realize that teenagers almost require MORE attention.

Cory, all I can say is I know how you feel. Having 3 girls (11, 6, and 1 years old) I realize how the kids alone can compromise your time. I've basically put card collecting in the backseat just grabbing a few Yzerman auto's here and there but that's about it.
I honestly hope you keep your Hawerchuks though as I know it wasn't easy grabbing most of them and I know you put a lot into that part of your collection. Good luck whatever you do Cory and it was always nice talking with you at the expo's...:)

Chris - nothing is ever cheap. ;) I'll likely start listing a few things this weekend, but most will start hitting in a month or so.

Brian - thanks. I haven't decided what's happening with the Duckys, but I think I'll keep 'em. Not a high marketable commodity anyway... :) So you might see the odd mail post from me still.

Joseph - never considered myself hardcore, but then again, maybe I was and didn't know it! lol

Wes, thanks. Been thinking on it for a while, tried to make things work, but... meh, wasn't working out.

Glenn, you're right. How long does it take kids to grow up? :)

Vic - if anything, chat is where you'll see me. Being social is the fun part of this, and it's easy to spare a few moments to say hello.

Barrie - thanks. Since you started up on Beckett, I've always looked forward to your posts, mail and opinion type. Actually, you're the type of collector I wish I could be, able to appreciate each card I receive and have something good to say about it.

Bruce - no kidding. The oldest isn't too bad yet, but I seem to have less and less time to spend with any of them. I'd rather enjoy their hobbies with them then segregate myself with mine.

Dave - you're a good egg man! Keep up the B love! Considering how poorly I dropped the ball on our first deal, I appreciate the chance to make things right and be buds online. Take care of yourself... and no more pictures in Beckett! :)
