I feel like UD is better offering
a) a list of cards that you can pick from (hard to manage and co-ordinate)
b) a paypal gc
c) provide more effort on working back and forth on the replacement
So many different people have different expectations for a redemption replacement. Some people want matching market value, some people want matching collectible factor (ie: multi auto, shield, 1 of 1, etc). Give people a "choice" and i think there would be less issues.
My last replacement, I had a list of 4 players which I thought was reasonable and matched the values and 1 player which was obviously higher. No response to my list and I instead got a player that wasn't even on my list.
So I sold the card on eBay and used the funds for something else that I wanted. Mildly annoying since I had waited 4-5 years on that redemption before they marked it as not produced.
I can't imagine waiting 11 years on a redemption and basically having no say on what you get for a replacement. Obviously shields would be very difficult to replace with another shield, nevermind a dual shield, but I think they could have done something better than a white patch.
c) provide more effort on working back and forth on the replacement
This ^^^^
I understand the issue that cause redemptions (at least I think I do). I've had one experience with a redemption replacement.... and all I will say is that it's frustrating, and they don't listen.
It's a customer service failure that they need to give you an alternate card. They should be making every effort to make you happy. I can also respect the fact that they can't please everyone.... and requests could be a problem.
"I collect Gretzky / McDavid / Howe / Crosby / Lemieux Autographs" would be an easy thing for everyone to say... and demand a top replacement for whatever their card is. Of course UD can't honor that.
My one time having gone through the process: A Ranford SPGU Lettman Auto /50 (so a signed, manufactured patch) was never made. After nearly five years, they told me to send them a list of what I collect, so they could send me something else.
I told them I collected Oilers patches & autographs. I was mostly interested in Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, or Jari Kurri in exchange. I specifically told them I did NOT want Grant Fuhr, and I was only interested in Ranford if they would check with me first, to make sure it was a card I didn't already have.
No reply to that list.... but I get a package a couple of months later. What did it have?
1. Grant Fuhr Autograph from The Cup
2. Grant Fuhr Autograph from UD Black
3. Dual Jersey / Auto of Grant Fuhr & Bill Ranford from OPC Premier (of which I already had a copy)
Now, value wise? I had zero complaints. What they sent me was worth more than what I was owed..... but I was so annoyed at the whole thing, because they asked for a list, I gave them one, and they sent me exactly what I told them not to.
Would it really be that big of a deal for them to have half a dozen emails back and forth, letting the customer pick their replacement?
