Gretzky OPC Rookie "Altered"?

So I picked this up not too long ago, originally I thought that beckett just said it was authentic (hence the box around authentic) and not altered since it wasn't boxed in. I was under the impression that whoever sent it in only wanted to see if it was real or not and didn't want to get a specific grade, so they didn't grade it. However doing further research it seems like the card is authentic but is also "altered" in some way. Not sure what to make of this or the value of it. Book value is $500 to $800 so how much would this bring the card down? If anyone has any knowledge about this sort of stuff please feel free to post.

problem is knowing what has been altered does trimming count as altered, that's a huge issue

Yes-my friend bought an Orr RC and it had been trimmed a fraction of a millimeter on one edge and it came back the same way. You could not tell by looking at it but hold it up beside another card and it was barely noticible

I would maybe fire off an email to beckett grading asking how it had been altered, they must have notes on the card in their system

Definitely something off with that card. The sides look skewed but the top and bottom look square. Weird.

Certainly majorly off centered and trimmed. Look at the bottom edge. It starts with the bottom (left side of picture) touching or almost touching the bottom of the holder and as it goes across it stays straight and flat until 1/4 the way across and by the time it reaches the fair right bottom side its way off not even close to touching. The bottom should rest straight across on the bottom. Looks like a bad trim on the bottom and at least 1 side. I would think anyone who saw the card would pay $100 maybe less for it. That's me going by the scan, it may not look as bad in person but it looks pretty bad in the picture. Still a Gretzky though but it would be worth more if not altered even if it had a small ding, mark etc.

Opc would go slightly higher depending on the trim, cut etc...

It's funny how different eyes have different things jump out at them. The first thing I thought was that 3 of the 4 corners may have been darkened with a marker somehow, kind of like was prevalent with 1971 Topps baseball.

Yeah.. Hard to say if the issue is trimming. The card is definitely rotated to the left as it was printed. The fact it isn't sitting straight in the case just suggests they did a half assed job putting it in. Even if trimmed, they could have laid it more flush with the bottom.

The darkness in the corners could just be the lighting and photo quality.

The roller Mark sure stands out... LOL. Hate to say this but that card would actually have a better return price out of the slab.

I get that people are worried about authenticity but anyone who is really interested in that card already knows what to look for - likely more so than the summer student working at the grading company....
