Gretzky steps down as coach of Coyotes

Considering that he was going to be out either way when the issue got resolved - why wait until then?

As far as Gretz goes, hopefully he gets his cash.

Ulf Samuelsson? Fantastic.
The Coyotes players will be taught the fine art of the cheap shot knee by the guru himself. Domi for asst coach? ;)

Considering that he will likely argue that he has an ownership claim in Phoenix he probably won't get too many offers to coach elsewhere or even if he did he'd need to decline due to appearance of conflict of interest. Rock and a hard place.

true i forgot all about that

Wayne did not step down, he flat out did not show up at Coyotes camp.

Here is one piece I read:

"Gretzky hasn't been at the Coyotes camp for 10 days, although its unclear whether he's been told to stay away or is boycotting the proceedings for legal or personal reasons. A Coyotes spokesman did tell the Arizona Republic yesterday that Gretzky is receiving his coaching salary, but just isn't working."

It's long overdue. Gretzky has yet to prove his mettle as a coach. Any other coach with his record would have been summarily fired.

This has been a horrible situation for Gretzky, and another instance in his career where an aspect of his involvement has unintentionally put him on the wrong side of the media's attention (see Pocklington, McNall, Tocchet to name a few).

He was in a catch-22 regarding what to do in showing up for training camp with the Coyotes. Since his contract is extremely complicated and includes both his ownership compensation as well as his coaching compensation (therefore making it seem like he is getting paid far more than any other coach in the NHL), he was probably wise in not showing up to training camp.

Saying that, however, by not showing up for training camp, it effectively sealed his fate of not returning as coach because he gave off the wrong impression to the younger players (let alone the fact that he was not involved in either new potential owner's agenda).

In the long run, this will be the best thing for Gretzky to step away and let the legal system do the work and no longer be stuck in the grey area. Unfortunately, this now puts Gretzky completely out of hockey for the time being, and I personally hope he can somehow get involved something positive. In my opinion, somehow getting involved with Team Canada again for the 2010 Olympics (even though it is late in the works) would be a great re-introduction into the management world, as he had success during the 2002 Olympics. It also would not hurt if Yzerman gave him a "special consultant" label to at least get him in the door once again.

I think this spells the beginning of the end for the Coyotes franchise.
I think Gretzky knows the NHL will lose the bid, hence his reluctance to be involved with the team to this point.

Regardless, I think he will be just fine.

Go for the knees, dive whenever possible, and if you happen to end the career of one of the most beloved players of a generation, so be it. That will be his pep talk.

I will never forgive Ulf as long as I live for what he did to Cam Neely. I hope he gets a puck in the head while standing on the bench. I don't want him to die, just bleed profusely for awhile. I don't dislike many people more than I dislike him.

With Gretzky's energies now focussed solely on the '10 games, I'm running to the nearest sports book.

Gretzky isn't part of the 2010 Olympic team in any way. I personally think he should take a step back from the game and learn to appreciate it again from a removed standpoint. This farce in Phoenix must have taken a toll from the start, and he may be better served just forgetting about the NHL for a while.

Maybe he'll become his sons agent next... :)

And thankfully, Ulffy didn't stay the coach for very long!
