H.I. handle & EBay id: what is it and why?

I'm old enough to have handles dating back to the bad old days of the BBSs. And if you have to ask, you're too young to understand. ;)

Originally when I first got into this whole mess in BBS days, my handle reflected my musical leanings - initially Mojo Nixon, later on Pink Floyd. The less said about those days the better, although I do have fond memories of the newscan trap.

Around...oh second year of Med School, we started getting offered internet access through the university. This stuff was still on dialup, and was glacial at best. We were using PINE to read mail, and surfing was near nonexistent. The best I could manage in the dark days of '93 was Usenet newsgroups. There was ZERO choice in handle generation at that time - pretty much just your initials and a series of numbers @whateverserverhadspace.usask.ca Whee.

Then a few nifty little innovations changed everything. Some wisenheimer figured out how to make PPP and GUI get along, and someone invented reliable POP servers. Around the same time, broadband was coming more available here (FYI, Saskatchewan has the best telecommunications backbone in NA, and Canada remains among the best worldwide). Suddenly there was a heckuvalot more choice available. At that time I was already in my pathology residency. Every time I had to explain what that was, someone would invariably say "Oh, like that show Quincy?". *sigh* Yes, like that **** show. So I figured "why fight it?" and went with the traffic.

in 1998, a friend of mine told me about this nifty site called "eBay", so I joined. Lemme tell ya, it was in some ways a much easier site to use when everyone was relying on money orders. Time marches on....and I find that Beckett has a website. So I register. What name to take? Feh, why be original now? I'd do some buying/selling/trading there from time to time, but mostly still sticking to usenet. And then someone - I believe it was Darren/dahabsfan - pointed me in the direction of the message boards.

And now, "quincy" remains my handle pretty much in perpetuity. Scourge of two message boards and the lament of many an eBay user. Arrrrr! :)

My ID on eBay is also BlindThomen, as it is everywhere else where a username is needed. It's a lot easier that way, I guess. Won't have to remember all kinds of different ID's.

As for the "breakdown":

Blind = My all-time favorite band Blind Guardian

Thomen = BG's ex-drummer Thomas "Thomen" Stauch

There you have it. :)

had no idea that you name was coming from Guardian ! Have seen them in November in Paris, 1st row, amazing show and songs ! Second favourite just behind Maiden

I was trying to register for a freaking Yahoo email address, and I must have tried about 50 variations of 'leafschick' and 'leafsgirl' until I decided I'd have to go with some misspelling. Misspelling 'girl' as 'gurl' makes my skin crawl, so I took out the 'c' went with the last year the Leafs won the Cup, and finally had my email address. I've used leafschik1967 at any sports related website I sign up to. Every so often, I get someone asking me if I am 39 years old. I should start saying yes, since its less embarassing to be old than being a Leafs fan at some times.

On ebay, its 'hockey_chick_8' which is pretty unoriginal. Clearly ebay had less users than Yahoo, and I went with '8' which was my hockey number. I do believe that number has been officially retired in chat on HI as well.

I have other user names for other sites, depends on where I go. I kick around on a few military forums, where my handle is D_Plus_One since my birthday is June 7, which of course, is the day after D-Day.

An interesting topic Prime!

Both my names are 7-11 of Overtime and I chose it because initially I began looking for all 15 of Bob Nystrom's base cards (If I had only stopped then!)

Bob Scored his most famouf goal to win the Stanley Cup at 7:11 of Overtime in 1980.

On here Plumbob13 is a combination-first of my best known nickname from the Navy (and just about the only one I can mention in mixed company). It is the item you see below and/or by putting "bob" onto my last name(which works as a good nickname for a number of people). The 13 was my number from the various sports I played in my younger days.

On ebay it is plumbobs was the one of the various combos that actually worked.

Well, my nick doesn't have nearly as interesting a story behind it... well, depends who you ask I guess! In 1993, I was in Maine, from PEI, for a research trip to a blueberry processing plant - we had to create a business plan in our final year at UPEI for an industry that wasn't currently in PEI, and we chose this plant idea since PEI grows pretty amazing blueberries. Anyways... we were in Maine and one of my buddies was sick - high on NyQuil & Sudafed, and a few crappy US beers too... we were in a verbal battle of wits, and he looks at me all stoned up and says "oh yea?!? well when you were born you were nothing but a greasy ole meatball!".....  the name stuck for the rest of my final university year... my mother must be so proud.

When I left PEI to move to Calgary and got my first internet account, I was addicted to online chatting (Alamak - good lord, that was years ago!) and decided to take ownership of the nickname and change it to something less derogatory (to me) and more interesting, thus "meatman" came alive... it was hard to use that name in other sites, so I had to make it less copyable (is that a word?), so I added "cgy" short for Calgary. Therefore, meatmancgy is my HI name.

For eBay, I used to use meatmancgy, but after a very bad disagreement with eBay (actually due to a poorly ended auction of mine (my fault), which is how I actually first met crankshaft (Rod), who introduced me to HI), I let the meatmancgy auction ID die, and started meatiecgy - obviously a shortened version of my original nick.

There you have it... and there's 2 minutes of your life you'll never get back! ;)

HI: Särås : Särås is my last name, just that simple... :)

On the rest of the internet i try to have Särås becorse it's quite "hard to forget and allso unique".

Beckett id: Saras

Ebay id: jimmy_lazzat

But Ebay and Beckett don´t let me have my real name becorse the wicked ä and å in my name, that leters are from Sweden and Näslund have it and a lot of the rest Swedich players allso have it in the real name but they just thurn the ä and å to a so i have done that on Beckett.
On the Ebay i did use my first name Jimmy a name i don´t use a lot on internet mayby becorse i dident like the name when i was young, i did like my mid name Robert litle beter but no one did use it so it´s "dead" today...
But the Lazzat thing is a idea from the car club i started in Sweden some years ago (2001) and in Sweden for every one ho likes cars know what Lazzat are and a lot of them know that im was the starter of the comunity and club back in the days, so for Ebay there Saras was in use or somthing i did run for my first name and my name on the car club Lazzat...

But i have always been try to use my real name on the internet and have not been loosing on it... Im a onest man and hope that every one else is that! :)

HI - Pretty self explanatory...

ebay - chinechin....Before I moved out I had to use my parent's credit card, and with that I had to have a username my dad picked...great. If it were up to me I'd think it'd be....;)

So, if I have to tell you what my ID means (which is, not-so-coincidentally, the same one I use at Beckett to avoid confusion), then I'm in the same boat as Rob ;)

Ebay ID: capsfan30. Well, I'm a Capitals fan, and my hockey number is 30.

My HI ID is simply from two of my all time favorite Leafs, Mahovlich and Sittler, nothing scientific attached.

Ebay ID is danboy-1, I must have tried a dozen variations before this one went through.

Also known as Burkefan and merc2k on other sites.

Dan.

I'm Sacrebleu here because I remember collecting cards as a little kid when there were small cartoons on the back and there was one where one guy got hit by a puck or got slashed and he screamed the mild French expletive "Sacre Bleu"- it always got a smile out of me.

I'm Deeceman here and on Ebay because I was given the name David Casey Weisberg at birth and there was another David who was a cousin of mine and David Casey was just too long for people to say so another cousin gave me the nickname "D.C." which is what I went with up until high school when my best friend decided that even D.C. was too long so he shortened it to the one syllable "Deece" (rhymes with "peace")- that is even what my wife calls me now!

When I established an Ebay account the name Deece was taken so I chose "Deeceman" which is what my friend Ralph calls me- although he pronounces it the Jamaican way as in "Deecemon".

That's my story anyway- thanks for the read.

Dave

Howe1850 = Gordie Howe's last name and the number of points he gathered during his career.

Why i have this nick, i actually can't find a single good reason. I needed an alias, for some reason i thought Howe1850 sounded pretty fun. Didn't really like the guy all that much either. LOL

Should swap it to Kharlamov17 or somethin' but i'm not so sure that's too good since i and most folks probably recall me from my nickname. Oh well.

Fritz comes from the first leopard gecko I got about 5 or 6 years ago, beckett ID used to be primus007 until their fee system got me between credit card updates & they naru'd me over $5. I never bothered to sign back up but a buddy of mine will usually pick things up for me if I find something I like. His id is x99ftn which was his assigned username when we were at university.

hccollector....:) "H"ockey"C"ardCOLLECTOR
abmathewsshooter on the Bay. I from Alberta "AB" and my other hobby is bowhunting and I shoot a "MATHEWS" bow....and I added the SHOOTER.....hmmm, I don't really know why LOL

That's messed up. No wonder we don't get along. My birthday is June 6th.

We dual-personality people never get along.

My moniker here is "gamebreakerJEFF".

I chose it for a few reasons. I wanted to be able to come to the boards without being tied to the store. I figured that if I picked another name, I would be somewhat anonymous though.
Kinda a double edge sword though, as it is nice to troll the boards without 'shop-talk'.

I am at a point where I would love to change my handle.
Anyone know if I can do that?

Anyways, the handle is self explanatory.
My name is Jeff & I work at gamebreakers.
If you know me - nuff said.
If you don't know me, now you know.

My Ebay id is senatorsmith.

Simple enough to explain. My last name is Smith. I love the Sens, and I know too much about them and their collectibles. I am Smith, and a smith is a metalworker... hence senatorsmith - a Mr. Jeff Smith who works & specializes in everything to do with the Ottawa Senators. Cool eh?;)
