Habs trade Domi for Josh Anderson

Canadiens acquire forward Josh Anderson in return for Max Domi and a third-round pick in 2020 (78th overall)

The Habs overpaid IMO...

I’m a big Anderson fan. Was really hoping the flames would trade for him. Guy is a beast when healthy. I’m not a Domi fan so I think Montreal did fine here.

All that trolling Domi was pulling with Leafs fans looks good on him now. Lets see if he starts proclaiming Columbus as the best city in the NHL and have Tie come dress up in full BJ's gear to get a rise out of Leafs nation.

Figured Domi was not long for this team when he was pulling 4th line duty in the playoffs.

It probably affected its trading value down. I also heard he was looking for a very long top $ contract.

I think both are RFA next year. Habs might have a better chance at signing a decent contract with Anderson.

Also, trading away Domi means more ice time for Danault. Danault might not be officially the 1st center, but he'll get important faceoffs and if KK/Suzuki have a cold period, Danault will be there. I prefer Danault to Domi, both on and off ice.

While on paper this looks like the Jackets fleeced the Habs, I read an article yesterday that broke down why this is a trade that truly benefits both squads, and is not as lopsided as one would imagine.

Bottom line, Anderson (provided he can stay healthy) really fills a need for the Habs. He will be the second line RW, and should open up space for KK or Suzuki, and whomever is on the LW (likely Drouin, if he stays healthy). His advanced metrics also show a model of consistency, something which Domi was not.

Domi's play, coupled with KK's emergance in the playoffs, meant that either he was going to be relegated to third or fourth line center position, or played completely out of position on the wing, which he proved this season he is not really capable of doing. Not to mention the paycut that would have accompanied it.

The key to all of this of course is whether or not Anderson is over the shoulder issues that sidelined him last season and affected his play.

Any predictions on how many years Anderson gets into his new 7 year, $38.5 million contract before he gets bought out?

To me this contract is absurd. Anderson would have to basically max out his potential for several years for this to even be a decent deal for the team.

Money is right (provided he returns to form), term is about 5 years too long, but we'll see.

This contract makes me suspect another forward under contract is on their way out.
