I have a question for you fellow collectors.

Is it harder to trade these days?

I ask because I find it difficult to trade for pc cards recently.

Before, I wanted a card for my pc and often the collector that had the card(s) found something in my tradelist for it to retrade it or whatever.

Now it seems that everybody only look for pc cards, so that makes it a lot harder to trade for pc wants. So i'm left with the ''only option'' to buy the cards I need.... but the money doesn't grow on trees lol !

I think that before, it was a lot easier to trade for pc stuff cause people wanted to help each other etc.. Now i think it has changed a lot.

Obviously, there's cards in my tradelist that I would only trade for PC card but there's a lot of cards that i'd let go for other traders if that means I can help someone else with their pc. That's the way I see things, but unfortunately, this kind of help between collectors seems to have dissappear.

For example:

A guy has a UD S1 Canvas of Datsyuk that books at 5BV. I send him a message asking him if he could check my tradelist out. He responds by saying ''sorry, nothing I could use''..

Really? For a 5BV card ? I have plenty of traders and they are not that bad! You can ask me a 15BV card and I could take an extra card with the Datsyuk you know, but no, the other person cannot find anything in my tradelist.

Sometimes I can understand when it's bigger cards and all, but with a little insert/parallel ?? That I can't understand.

What do you guys think ? Did you see a difference ? What's your view on this?

Thanks for reading and forgive me my english, it's not my first language ;).

I think one of the big issues now is the cost of shipping.

It would cost me over $3 to ship a single card in a top loader to Canada from the US. Plus the time to pull the card ,package, drive and wait at the Post Office. If I'm not getting back a card for my PC or a better trade bait card its getting harder to keep helping people out with small trades.

Thanks
Dan

I do find it frustrating to trade at times.

Some guys use BV as a ref, which most people know can be mis-leading. There are cards that sell for 50-75% of BV on ebay, and some that go for 5-10% of the same BV.

So if they have a PC card you want, people comb through your bucket looking for those "undervalued" BV cards. Then you get an offer for a #'d jersey autograph card for a higher #'d jersey card that for some strange reason has the same BV.

Plus once traders find out that you're interested in some of their cards for your PC, all of a sudden it becomes a ransom situation. They ask for twice the amount for what the card has been going for on ebay. This is usually the case for collectors who collect older pre-lockout cards.

It become pointless in trading when it's actually cheaper for you to sell the card and buy the card you want on ebay.

Because of this, I pretty much only buy, and have stop trading/buying trade bait and building a decent trade bucket (or even updating it). Usually, I'll only buy for my PC or what I like, or if it's a really, really good deal.

Plus it also gets tough when people are looking for mid or high end cards and only have low end cards in their trade bucket.

And as mentioned above, shipping is a killer for small deals. So when you are moving to mid-range trades, it's harder to get them done.

personally, i am finding it very difficult to deal with people on forums in general. Now im not putting anyone down or anything, but it seems like when i do see a Cloutier card fs/ft on a forum, and i inquire about it, they see i collect Clouts and BOOM they think they can rake in the dough.

i dont mind paying good money for a card i need, but when you are asking 30 bucks for a insert #/100 (UD MVP) there is a problem. yes i do know these cards arent easy to find at times, but 30 bucks plus shipping is a little insulting.

I've actually found it fairly easy to get trades done recently. There are ALOT of great members still willing to help a guy out. The thing I try and remember is if they are trading me a of card for trade bait make it worth their while. The person getting the PC Card should be willing to give a little extra, not forced to, willing to.

I haven't been around much lately because I'm buried in student loans and have been stuck browsing for the past few months so I can't really say hard to trade "lately". However in the past if it's a small card for someone's PC and I can't find anything I need from them I do 1 of 2 things

1. Ask them to just surprise me with whatever red wings commons/inserts they are willing to part with for a my little cousin or nephew. I'm their favorite :yess:

2. Go to the transactions thread and take a look for someone they recently traded with to get there address and send it their way (side note: if it's a super common insert of a recent product I don't see the problem sending the surprise packaged well in a PWE for 50 cents) Someone did this for me and it was a great surprise so I figured it would be nice to pay it forward to others as well.

Also, this:
The thing I try and remember is if they are trading me a of card for trade bait make it worth their while. The person getting the PC Card should be willing to give a little extra, not forced to, willing to.

I've found trading has been way harder since 05-6. There was so much damn money on the table, everyone wanted cash and nothing else. Since then, the art of the trade has been on the steady decline. It's recovered a little in recent years...but nowhere near what it was prior to the 04-5 lockout.

Before I forget: Damn you, NHL and NHLPA for the sickening regularity of your labour disputes.

Personally I mostly buy, but even there the shipping gets in the way quite often. Sending a card or two from Canada to Finland is 8 USD, so that gets easily way too expensive.

I find it harder that some people are not willing to sell, only to trade. That causes that I need to buy something from Ebay and get that shipped to them and I'm afraid that it gets messy at some point.

I have been turned off the past 8-12 months with the whole post a trade list and people reply with what they can use. Then, "check out my list/bucket", and you do. I reply with what I can use and it turns into "I would rather sell them, are you buying?".
It's retarded cousin is the "luring technique method". In this mental illness of trading you go back and forth for many posts, all is well and good, deal is about to get done, you get that team bag and decoy card for extra protection, and then "are you buying?".

Then, there is the it sells on ebay for this much, and yours doesn't. Simply sell the card then there. If I am posting a trade list, it is to trade. Some how it has turned into ebay quotes all the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Perhaps I can start quoting card show sales??????

S.C.T.S. This has always plagued the trade boards for years and in person. Single Child Trader Syndrome is when everything you have is junk, and what I have is gold. "I can use your $20 Lundqvist jersey. Well, I am only looking for Gretzky game used in return etc....... We all have dealt with it, there is people with S.C.T.S. reading these posts to boot.

Question is, when ebay starts sending out those 1099 forms to sell on ebay will people go out and get a business license to sell on ebay? Buying doesn't matter since you don't need a business license to do so. There should a mass exodus of sellers on ebay here very shortly due to it. Perhaps selling on ebay might be good again like 2003-2006 area???

Actually one more thing I do personally: If I have a card someone wants (happens next to never), I usually give four options
1) Send me a McLeod-card I don't have yet
2) Pay me some fair PayPal-price for it
3) Send me Avalanche-cards of your selection
4) Send me any NHL-cards of your selection

The last one for sure is the most expensive for buyer, I usually ask like 2-3 times BV of what I'm trading away, while the first one might be next to free for the trading partner.

Personally I think Dan is right on the money. Especially if it is a smaller trade. I am only seeking inserts right now and a 1 for 1 trade is going to cost me and the person I am trading with more in postage than it would for me to just buy the thing off of check out my cards or one of the other sites. I'm more than willing to trade but the way things are I'm only looking for Wings and it would cost me more to just keep taking on different traders all the time.
Alex, if I come across a Datsyuk canvas ill grab it for you. Unfortunately I only have one.

I think its pretty easy if people have the same things for trade. When i used to bust some The Cup, trading with Joel or other members that busted some was pretty asssle free.Same thing with UD 1, when i busted some case, trading with other people that busted some to fill YG sets, or trading case hits down like rookie breaktrought/100 or whatever to fill YG sets.

I think it come down to your trading partner in general, if its something i really want i dont mean leaving a few bucks behind. If the guy only wants to make a killean out of your stuff its another thing.

Its sad but otherwise i think its easier to sell the stuff you dont want and buy what you really want.

People are lazy most of the time - when they are doing a trade they do CTRL + F nma of their player if they found nothing it's the reply "Nothing i can use"

I am looking for a 08/09 SPGU base card of my player Huet #25 in set - impossible to find one and I am sure 10 or more people have one somewhere in a closet.

AS much as possible, if there is nothing I can use and the guy really needs a card I tell him to send something and surprise me !

Note that I am living in France and with no card shop and no card show I can't have all contacts and help but I am not complaining some people are cool and give a hand !

Exactly what I do experience in nowadays....
The funniest part is that very same person who craves outrageous (like +$400 for a $100-$130 card) amounts of my $ for a card that I need often in the return offers $5-$15 for a $50-$100 card and gets absolutely mad when I turns down their offers.....not here but at other forums....

Too many does require huge fortune in return but gives nothing in return, sadly enough it's how the hobby looks alike now....

MasterP has nailed it on this topic me thinks.

It happens more on other sites, but every site has these types of so-called "traders". I like to call them "extortion traders" and they exist young and old and have no respect for this hobby.

In most cases, warning bells alarm for me if someone uses any of these tactics to immediately gain leverage over me, acting like they are experts because they wrote down the last 10 ebay sales for said card... "Your card books at $800 and the last two sold for $450, but I still want $800 for my $800 card".... or hoping to get back $800 in trade on a $500 card...and so on...... one can use many different scenarios like these but the end result is the same.

Sometimes adding to a deal is required and I fully understand that when it is clearly warranted, but not when it results in the other party trying to get 3x the value back in return. I find its best to trade with people that are trying to add something of similar value to their PC. Trying to trade with a card flipper is usually a waste of time...unless you want to lose your shirt!

With that said, if the other party decides to trade negatively like that with me, well then that is the end of the conversation and any future ones....as they are blocked.

I'm paraphrasing a known quote here, but it's quite simple really...Treat other traders the way you would want to be be treated like, be fair and respectful, and have fun with this hobby.

I still like trading myself, and there are many great fellow members on here that are great to deal with.

I love trading and always will and 99% of the time i would actually rather trade than sell (i am not in this for the $$;))
there is nothing more gratifying to me than helping a fellow collector with there pc with a trade
to me trading is one of the things that makes this hobby of ours great!
i am always open to trades big or small
i feel its the best way to make good friends and contacts for future trades that may help my pc

im a trading fool  and im not changing any time soon
so if ur looking to trade shoot me a pm:beer:

I love when the flippers come up to you at card shows. You know by what they are picking out from the case. $200 Crosby auto and want to pay 75% off book. You tell your price and the body contortions start with the neck jitters. A clear case of S.C.T.S. (single child trader syndrome). You go up to their table and it's mine is gold and yours is _ _ _ _.

Im just tired of putting what I want or who Im looking for in trade threads and getting check my tradelist or bucket pm's ......I put what Im looking for on there for a reason I dont wana spend forever looking at score inserts and 3 year old young guns of Petr Kalus

I find it harder to trade for my wants, but that might be because my wantlist got a lot shorter lately.

I'm going more and more with ebay to pick my wants. I get around 10 ebay packages for 3-4 trades.

When somebody asks for a card, I usually try to help them and pick whatever tradebait, except if it's brand new popular stuff. Then I'm more picky.

A lot of the time, I just find it easier to buy. It seems negotiating is a pain in the backside on trades, but buying is easier.
