As you all know I live in a really rural area...end of the world as my 7 year old calls it. I call it the promise land as it is one of the most beautiful places in the world to live. Anyhow the nearest true card shop is 1200km away so there isn't much collecting happening here. I have considered and decided that I want to start up a collectors/trading club for my son and his friends. Probably in the age range of 6-10 years old. I am wondering if anyone else here has taken on anything like this? I am looking for some advice.

As I mentioned cards are very limited here so I will probably have to help most of the kids out to get started. Anyone have any ideas on how I should get it going? Should I just do random draws to make it fair or how should I try and pass out some of the cards? I plan on buying a few boxes, 1 for a door prize and another 1 or 2 to pass out the packs for the kids to open. I am not sure if I can make this fly but there is a huge hockey and NHL following here so I really think it can work. I see how excited my son is over cards and I wish that he had some kids his own age to share his collecting experiences with, similar to what I had as a kid. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
Maybe you could put an ad in a paper to try and gauge an intereste level or just talk to a few parents who ahve children in your age range. I think trying to figure out what kind of interest there is going to be will be your first hurdle. Once you know how many people you are talking about, you could either take some cards out of your collection to get started or ask to purchase bulk lots that people no longer want, they might just donate (PM if you need some stuff, I would love to help out) I think once you get them hooked it would be nice to teach them the finer points, much easier to learn from someone then try and figure it out on your own. Anyways, I don't know if I am on the right track here but atleast it is something to think about, right or wrong, haha
 
I live in a small town, only 2500 people and around 1500+ of them are senior citizens. I basically know everyone here so its quite easy to get word around. I think I could get 20-30 kids involved that would keep interested. Thanks for the ideas and the offer to help. After I have the first meeting I will try and get some pictures and post them on here (as long as the parents are cool with that).

Do you guys think I should charge a small fee, say $10 per member to get them some basics (beckett, Top loaders, sheets etc...) or ar they better off without guides? Not sure which way I should lean. You can't buy guides or supplies here so I could do a big group order through a shop and get everyone stuff to start off with (basics).
 
That's quite the gesture. I'm sure the kids will get a kick out of it, and appreciate it moreso when they are older.

I think there is a Math teacher online with a card collecting group at his school (Guelph, ON area). He either posts here or on Beckett, or both (??). Basically, he introduces "educational" aspects to collecting cards --writing TTM requests, math using the stats on the back, etc. Maybe you could seek him out for hints.

I think a $5/$10 membership fee would be fine considering the hodge-podge of supplies you could provide. I would also suggest keeping it to a small group at first --- so you don't get in over your head ;-) As for price guides, you want the kids to be on an even "trading" field. If no one is using them, then that's cool. But if one kid has one, then there should be a copy available for everyone else to use as well.
 
I would suggest staying away from a price guide. If they are 6-10 years old let them collect because they like to collect. Also, try to keep game used/auto/numbered cards/high value cards very limited. Maybe give it to the member of the month?

Think back to when we collected as a kid. No Guides,just the thrill of hitting there fav player. Get them on a low end and have a prize for the kid who pulls there fav player or the best pull. A fee would help with the basics

i would be happy to help you gather supplies or make a donation to your cause...starting kids on the collecting path will give them less money to get in trouble with.....LOL...also....did you happen to see the CUP when Dan brought it to your neck of the woods??
 
No I didn't get to see the cup. I live roughly 11 hours (1100KM) away from where Cleary was.

My goal is going to be to have everything organized and ready for the first or second week of Sept. That way all the kids are back from summer camps and vacations plus it gives me some time to get everything ready. With all the support being offered here it will also give enough time for all the cards to arrive.
 
Great idea for comminity outreach. I don't have alot, but would be more than willing to send you some stuff to help out, cards and/or supplies, whatever I can afford. LMK what kind of stuff you would like. I have lots of base from the past 7 years, even some full sets.

Great idea and good luck with it, St. Anthony is a great place I lived there for 3 years but it is too far away from the bigger areas. Corner Brook has a card shop and it's a little closer than St. John's
 
It may be handy to hook up with a local shop to encourage them stock low-end cards. As a kid, I enjoyed having a place to spend my pocket money on cards. Five-and-Dime, Corner Store, Milk Bar, Newsagent... similar type shops all over the world.
 
Every time I visit Corner Brook the shop is closed, I assumed that it was shutdown. Still around 600km away haha, still a long way to drive for cards. Why were you in St Anthony, work?

Well, my dad was there for work, he was a RCMP member there for 3 years, it was only 3 years ago that we left. And the shop in CB isn't closed down I don't think, I was there not too long ago.
