Have you ever broke apart your PC?

I'm back in the hobby since four years now. During those years, I made changes to what I collect base on my budget and interests (when I got back, I tought I could collect everything, like in the 90's...).

I love my actual PC (on wich I worked very hard in the last three years). But I begin to worried that I might collect too much stuff. The result is I own a lot of cards, but not a lot of High End cards.

In the last few weeks, I tought really hard about letting go a part of my PC and concentrate mainly on the others. This make me feel kind of sad because, like I said, I worked really hard on my collection.

I wanna know if other collectors lived the same “crisis” and what they decided to do.

I am not looking for an answer. I just wanna read what other have experienced and on what they based their decision.

Sure did. I used to collect everything Tanguay. Then Artifacts was released and shot that right out the window. I decided to sell off anything that wasn't autographed, and haven't looked back. One of the best decisions I ever made, although there are a couple of cards that I wished I had kept. But in hindsight, I got a lot more for them at the time, so it was probably the right decision.

yea, im sure i do the same as other collectors, but i focus just on 1 player and then try and knock a set out. sometimes i can get a little boring posting for the same player with nil on reply's, so putting together a set keeps you going and in the end, you'll have something nice to display when your done.

There was a time I collected a little bit of everything. Then I decided to concentrate on just Habs and my older OPC sets. It hurt to put my Sakic, Yzerman & Roy cards among others, up for trade but I am over it now.

broke up my Franzen p.c. Just sold my Franzen shield the other day. Just need to send it out and receive payment for it. It was tough though.

I don't really concentrate on collecting anything specific... i mainly keep 100% of everything that i pull unless its a double and i buy things that catch my eye. I enjoy ripping wax and i only rip products that I will want to keep. ITG is a win for me every time.

I'm a Getzlaf collector and a former Lucic/J.Staal Collector. Although I only had ~10 cards for my Staal/Lucic collection, I decided to keep my favourite cards and put the rest for sale/trade. I realized that, for myself, I would have the chance to focus on my Getzlaf Collection and focus on mid-high end cards rather than searching for low - mid end cards for all three players!

I will sell off part of my PC no problem, but only if it means strengthening another part of my PC. I had to sell my Lucic The Cup "Property Of" to part fund the purchase of a Probert gamer.

By the way, your English is better than most of our attempts at writing a post in French. Good for you.

My main PC is 1 rookie of every player and I will not touch it under any circumstance (well life or death maybe, but you get the picture). I have had a number of people ask about rare recent rookies like Versteeg and Mike Brodeur

The problem with that PC is I have pretty much exhausted the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s except for a handful of cards so I had to expand my PC in order to be an active trader. I decided to focus on getting all Leafs base, base rookies and inserts. That PC I would break up, if I needed funds for personal reasons or if a rare rookie I needed came available for the right trade or price

I collected M. Brodeur last year with Hextall on the side. After realizing that Martys stuff is coming from every direction and there's no end in sight, I decided to let go. It was a biiiiig decision after spending 15 years collecting him.

Made a few collectors happy with the decision and oh boy, I did get some good chunks of $$$ to spend on Hextall, which was nice.

What comes to Ronnie, I've traded only two cards from my collection. But I did get a major Cup cards in return.... I'd do it again, no prob.

I have to remind myself that I collect HOCKEY.
Sometimes I get focused on a certain player and back in the OPC TOPPS days when it was easier to collect ALL;I've come to the understanding that if I move something,with today's internet Hobby store the item will most likely come around again.
I've moved a few items but don't feel any remorse as the items moved is only is small % of the Vintage Collection. Always fun to have the resources to add new items....Keeps the blood flowing and doesn't make the hobby stale.

I've gone from a loose team focus to a very focus'd player collector to now focusing on unique "catch my eye" cards of a hobby mainstay.

Of my three main player pc focus's I've choosen three different ways to break up those pc's. The first I sold as just one lot, the second I sold in chunks and traded, the third I'm in the process of selling and trading off just the extra copies I had.

Now I pick up unique items of Marty that catch my eye. My focus seems to change when the fun starts to stop.

While I've never broken apart my Pyatt PC entirely, I have made changes to how I collect and what I keep in my PC. I used to try to pick up anything that was slightly different about a card (significant serial numbering, different color jersey, as many as I could of a low print run) but I slowly realized that I didn't really NEED to do all that. I have since readed/sold duplicate cards in my PC that i enevr thought I would. As another poster put it, refocusing is definitely a big part to collecting.

I have tried started other player PCs but whenever I either needed money or wanted to shake things up a bit, they were the first things to go. To me its all about collecting what makes me happy at that time. It may change quite a bit and other times it may not change at all.

A very big thank you for your input, guys.

All your stories are great and I really enjoyed reading it. Some of you talk about remorses. It was great because I am a bit scare of feeling it in the future if I break my PC.

Two ideas really made me think. First, “refocusing is part of the hobby”. I had never look at it that way, but it is so true. I'll keep that in mind.

Second: “collect what makes you happy”. That is something I have always know. But I realized, just now, that it is not because it was fun two years ago to collect X player that it is still fun today.

Another thing that will influence my decision on breaking up my PC or not is... the future. I know that hockey cards are a bad investment. I read it all the time. But I have to think about the fact that one day, me (or a member of my family) will have to sell my PC. And I am not sure that, say, 30 years from now, people will get crazy over the nice Jean-Sebastien Aubin or Adam Pineault or Keith Yandle cards that I own...

In this optic, I spend more efforts on my Habs PC in the last few months. This is the direction I intend to go because I know that Habs cards will always have takers, even in 2040. But to spend $$$ on Habs, I have to stop spending on something else. See?

I have only moved a few cards from my Avs PC to another Avs collector on this board (Cole).My Sakic collection,which has been my main focus since 89,has never been touched.
