Hello,

I recently opened a few packs of 2001-02 Pacific Vanguard and noticed a Daniel Alfredsson parallel that has me stumped. I'm looking for help identifying it and its print run.

The cards don't scan so well (I apologize) but you can clearly see a difference. The one on the right is like all the other base cards that I have. The one on the left is all silver on the front and the back is no different from the base. There is no serial numbering and I have not been able to find any information on this parallel.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Brett,

This definitely isn't an intended parallel. My initial thought is that it's some kind of accidental variation.

It looks to me like the card on the left has the entire surface as that shiny foil-like finish that Vanguard was famous for. However, the cards were supposed to have the picture and logo in a more "matte" finish that doesn't change so much in different light.

So my guess is that it's an odd production error -- and it's the first of its kind I've seen, anyway.

Now that there was a similar Mogilny pulled on the boards: http://www.hobbyinsider.net/forum/showthread.php?t=333134
have to bring this old topic up. Beckett.com lists two different 1/1s from 2001-02 Vanguard: Proofs and One of Ones. But the Beckett Big Book from some years back doesn't list either but tells there's unannounced 1/1s cards in the product. I've always had an impression that the Proofs and One of Ones are actually one and the same card. And thinking the Alfie here and the Mogilny to be either of those since I've never seen an actual 1/1-numbered card from that year.

200-01 Vanguard Proofs are made of soft and bending vinyl/canvas material and look like this:

Anyone who has any further info on these?

When I saw that Mogilny pulled, I immediately thought about the Alfredsson I have.

If anybody else has one of these, I'd love to see a scan.

Thanks.

The Pacific Proofs that I pulled during that time were clear transparencies and paper thin. They were only in black and white - and had no colour on them at all, but they were all numbered to 10.

Beckett has that incorrect. There was only ever one intended 1/1 parallel to the 01-02 Vanguard set (same as the 00-01 set) -- the Vinyl 1/1s. Whether they are "officially" called Proofs or Vinyl or whatever, I do think that's the only intended 1/1 parallel. I also don't think those parallels were made for the rookie subset in either year -- I know for certain that no parallels were made for the rookies in 00-01, but the regular color-shift parallels were made for the rookies in 01-02.

I still think the Mogilny/Alfredsson are just production errors. They remain the only two I've seen.
