Hey all,
I've recently decided to put together an autograph set, and I've decided on 2006-07 Be A Player Signatures (Single autos only) because of the variety of names in the set and I've always loved the look of these cards. Can anyone who has experience with this set help me out with:

1) Is Upper Deck's checklist complete, or are there any additions or ommissions that need to be made?

2) Besides Joe Thornton, are there any SPs in this set?

Thanks for your help! If anyone has a lot of these available, I'd very interested in trading for them. I only have around 12 of them right now, so I'd likely need most of what you have.

Thanks,
Myles

Hey Myles,

There aren't any aftermarket additions (since BAP isn't Upper Deck's set to control, I believe they're basically forced to distribute what they have received, which is fine because BAP seems to be the most player-reliable signing set each year,) but Thornton is not just any SP...his auto shows up once in a blue moon. You're best attempting to complete the set with the fact that a Thornton might be a "nice to have" instead of a set necessity.

Then again, knowing him, you might get a PM from Quincy saying he's got a couple sitting in the box of doom ;)

I just remembered something about this set, don't bother looking in the Beckett guide for the Rookie autos, if you're attempting those too. For some reason they never added them to the priceguide and when we asked a few people got suspended. I believe there are eight of them.

I don't know that the rookie autos are part of the actual base auto set are they? I don't recall the numbering on them, but know there was more than 8 (I want to say at least 10.) Off the top of my head, that set consists of...

Latendresse
Staal
Bourdon
Thoresen
Kessel
O'Sullivan
Stastny
Weber

and I think Nigel Dawes. I don't remember if there were any others besides them

The trouble with the rookie autos is that Beckett did lousy legwork and refused to believe that anyone else might have done better research.

Those eight are the only eight rookies that had an autograph. They are not shortprinted, nor limited to any appreciable degree. There are only TWO variations of each of them - each numbered to 10 or 25 only - as compared to the three variations for the rest of the set (Base parallel #/10, variation 1 #/25, variation 2 #/10 - and yes, I can show you the difference).

Lastly, Thornton is the only SP in the set. I've only seen two or three copies surface, but I haven't been actively watching for it either. At last view, a copy could be expected to fetch $400 or more. I think the big set builders got theirs, but the player collectors might still be on the hunt.

Hope that helps.

Correct me if I'm wrong Steve, but does that read back that there are variations of the rookie autos too? I don't think I've ever seen those before.

Thanks to all for your help and insight into this set!

John - Thanks for the pm. I have 7 of the ones you listed, but I need the rest. I'll pm you back tonight.

mrconie - I'll send you a pm tonight as well.

Regarding the rookies, here is a regular Weber rc, the rookie auto, and the variation /25:
