HHOF Inductees 2017

For first year eligibility you have The Martins, Brodeur & St. Louis, then it drops off considerably to Olli Jokinen, Sergei Gonchar, Chris Phillips, Daniel Briere, Brendan Morrow, etc.
Should have called them the Martini's. Haha. Those two are shoes-ins for sure. Martin Brodeur is a first-ballot easy, and so should St. Louis, although he was always kind of underrated so maybe he misses the first year of eligibility. But still might get in first year. The next group, and no offense to them, they were solid, good players, but I don't see how any of them warrant getting in the HOF.

Not sure the reasoning Kariya is in. no 500 goals, no 1000 points, no Stanley Cup. i know that other "things" contribute to a player getting in but with this guy i don't see any of those "things". this is an honor that for me he does not deserve.

congrats to the others!

Sean.

Retired point per game. Had injuries not taken him he would have been over 1000 points faster then other HOFers. No cups just means he didn't luck out to be on any teams. Cups are overrated as the individual usually gets too much credit for a teams effort. His individual trophies are a little lacking but also played in time where he was just missing them.

It's also supposed to be the HOCKEY Hall of Fame, not the NHL Hall of Fame. Kariya had an good NCAA career parlayed into a Silver at the 1994 Olympics and Gold at the 2002 Olympics, in addition to almost reaching that 1000 point plateau. The HHOF has already set the precedent of consideration for injury shortened careers.

I'd say next year, there's a chance Brodeur goes in alone in the players category.

It's funny no one was talking about Kariya at all before the announcement but now everyone is, high five Derrick for going with PK! I felt pretty confident they would induct the dynamic duo together. That said I had Andreychuk as he was due. Recchi I axed for CuJo but that's biased and due to our personal ties to Curtis and his wife. Next time buddy!

Great class, glad to see Kariya get in like Bure and Lindros and other guys with similar careers, big stats and big time players but no Cups. And, as many have said, it's not the NHL hall of fame, its for hockey and Kariya was amazing in the NCAA. Congrats to the class of 2017!

Kariya's stats are pretty impressive.
402 goals
587 assists
989 points in 989 games

A point a game player, not too shabby, add in the Hobey Baker + 2 Lady Byngs.
Lets not belabour the 1000 point thing, he's only 11 shy of it. Nice to see what he could have done if healthy longer. One of the most exciting players of his era for sure.

Can't really argue any of the picks based on who is already in the HOF. Kariya, Recchi, Andreychuk doesn't lower the bar any.

Andreychuk - 14th all time in goals, 1 cup, long career, one of the most approachable players in the league (I've heard stories of how he would send a signature back for every bit of fanmail he received, even if it would take him a year or 2 to answer the letters)

Mark Recchi - 577 goals, clutch playoff performer in 3 stanley cup finals. Could easily have been in Conn Smythe talk either of those years if not for Lemieux, Ward or Thomas. A very long career like Andreychuk, which some people hold against them for whatever reason.

Paul Kariya was one of my favourite players in the mid-late 1990's. I'd go as far as to say he was one of the top 5 in the league overall between 1996 and 2000. Point per game player, Byng trophies, Good international and college numbers... I'd argue if the Ducks made the playoffs in 95/96 he'd have been the Hart Trophy winner.

ahhh the great things about opinions... :box: :corn: :bruce:

Easy lads, he's in, so the people who actually have opinions that count agree with you not me. lol. :grouphug:

Besides, if it was up to me the Grindline and Homer would be in :D :stanley::stanley::stanley::stanley::wings:
