HHOF inductions?

Vernon? Barrasso? Turgeon?

Sorry but I think it's embarrassing to have these guys in the Hall. Who's next? Kessel, Heatley, Ryan Miller, Getzlaf, Perry, Lecavalier, Gaborik, etc.

I'm sure I sound like the "old man yelling at cloud" guy but the bar to get in is pathetic at this point. Heard some radio guys saying Zetterberg is guaranteed to be in lol
 
I think it really has become the hall of pretty good instead of hall of fame. They keep voting in players because they have similar numbers to someone already in who maybe shouldn’t be in either. On a side note you have a guy like Claude Provost who granted was a checking forward, shutdown type player but he won nine Cups with the Habs yet he is not in the hall. They need to re-think the voting process so it’s not so much a popularity contest.

Turgeon is a 500 goal scorer, and I feel that those players should be in on that basis alone. I grant you, that gives you some lower-tier inductions. I still feel that they should be inducted.

vernon has two Cups in spite of his goaltending. He should not be in the hall unless he buys a ticket.

I can agree on Turgeon and also agree with your assessment of Vernon.

If you have a problem with Turgeon getting in, you may need to re-evaluate your criteria. 500+ career goals, 1300+ career points? Those numbers should make him an absolute lock.

Getzlaf and Perry are probably locks as well, not based on career NHL numbers, but based on achievements and impact on the game during their prime. Miller is a lock as well, he has the individual hardware, NHL records and accolades to justify it.

I agree that 500 goals/ 1000+ points should be automatic.

I disagree with the 500-goal mark making players automatic inductees. I don't think you belong in the Hall of Fame unless you were considered a star for a long period of time, or a superstar for perhaps a shorter time. Accumulators shouldn't be rewarded.

Turgeon got Hart Trophy votes once in his career and was an All-Star four times. That's a nice career, but not one that screams HOF to me and he only got to 500 by sticking around until his late 30s as a very average player.

If we're rewarding 500 goals, you're also letting in another guy who had a nice career with a couple of All-Star games and four forty-goal seasons, but who never received a single Hart vote. There was never a time I watched him and thought, this is what a Hall of Famer looks like.

There are already enough average players in there, I don't want to see more.
 
Turgeon was arguably the best player on his team for most of his career. Sure his talent waned in his last year s in the league but most players experience that as reflexes fade and such. He has two 100+ points seasons as well. If you’re going by those already in he is better than a large number for sure.

500 Goals might not get him in, but fathering Matthew & Brady has got to get him some points....

Prototypical power forward who played such a rugged game and to combine that with enough skill to score 500+ goals, has to be a lock in my opinion.

Mike Vernon retired in 2002... Barasso in 2003... if they were truly Hall of Fame worthy, they would have been there long before now.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no 'voting' process... it's an induction committee behind closed doors where they come to a consensus... when the mix of that group changes, people bring their own personal agendas forward and the loudest voice gets the most attention. It's ridiculous.

They should just put everyone in.

I didn't realize there was a limit on how many players could be enshrined?

The guy averaged better than a PPG in his career, has a better career PPG average than many players already enshrined, and won three individual trophies as a player. Probably the biggest knock against him is that he played during the same time as superstar guys like Jagr, Hull, Lemieux, Gretzky, but he never played with any real superstars during his prime. Like Iginla, Hawerchuk, Recchi, he did his job and did it well for a very long time. I have no issue with him getting in.

I never understood the mentality behind knocking a player for being enshrined. It makes more sense to me to question why certain other players AREN'T in? For instance, they could have inducted more than one female, why was Ouellete the only one inducted this year? Where is Botterill or Chu?
 
I'm not going to get into this year's class of inductees, as we can be here all day discussing if they're worthy or not, or who now is "worthy" due to this class and their comparables in years to come..

But I think they should hold off inducting "x" amount of players per year if the players eligible aren't on a certain level. It's the Hall Of Fame, not the Hall Of Good.

I wouldn't mind having some years where nobody gets in and we (the fans) need to be patient until someone truly worthy comes along. Because right now I think something about the selection process needs to be changed. Just my 2 cents.

I thought Turgeon only won a Lady Byng, and that was it.

My problem isn't with him specifically - you're right, he's way better than a lot of guys in there already. I just wish the Hall wasn't so watered down, but it's pretty the same across all sports. Baseball used to be pretty good until the Veterans Committee came along, but even they have slipped. I just think the Hall of Fame should be for those guys you look at and think, wow, that's a truly great player. But again, just my opinion.

As for the goalies, that's an even bigger debate.

If we don't have good enough guys to get in, we shouldn't start scraping the bottom of the barrel. As someone else posted, if they had to wait 20 years, they probably weren't HOF material to begin with

I think NFL and NBA have done a pretty decent job of maintaining a high standard. I think to get in the HOF, you should have to be a guy that for several years, other teams hated playing against you because you were just so damn good. I don't think anyone was afraid of Turgeon putting up 3 points in an 8-4 loss

Agreed.

It would be funny to have asked some of these players if they could see themselves in the HOF 20 years or so later. Not everyone, but I think some would have hesitated or flat out dismissed themselves from the conversation even with their accolades, and rightly so, but some of these guys probably would have never guessed they'd be in the Hall. And that says something.

HOF inductee's should be basically slam dunks (or close to it). I'm okay with a lengthly debate of a few voting years (3-5 year maximum for eligibility?) if a player is really on the edge, but digging up some names from the past like this waters it all down.

Of course we'll never know, and no player would ever un-invite themselves from the HOF, but it would be a interesting social experiment if we were able to go back in time.
 
Does anyone really think that they will ever have a year where less than 3 or 4 players are inducted? Take a look at the last five or six draft years and tell me who you think the 20 or so hall of famers are. Still early to say, I agree, but not any easy list to put together. You can question why certain players don’t make it by a certain time (Mogliny?) but in the end, the ones who should be there make it. If you look at the shoe-in players, there are usually 1-2 per year, and that’s going to leave room for some borderline players. Just my 2 cents.
 
Isn't it baseball who has a time limit of eligibility? I remember hearing about it when they were talking about McGuire and Bonds possibly not making it in (not sure if they are or not, I don't follow).
