I think the Thome that looks like a '97 is probably a throwback-type set. If it's what I think it is it would be dated 2005 on the back.

Interesting... practically all UD buybacks come with identification cards that indicate that the cards actually are buybacks. Maybe they're putting old stock in the boxes?
