I know that's a cheesy title, I'll admit it. Normally I'm not one for puns, but hey, everyone has their moments, haha.
I'll start from the beginning, (yeah, yeah, always a great place to start, haha...) I posted in Zach's (TheBostonKid) thread about an extra ticket to last night's Providence Bruins home opener. While I was excited about the game, and would have totally taken him up on meeting and watching the game, I had already bought bunch of tickets for my family to go and see my son Tim play with his pee wee team before the B's took the ice. He replied that he also had tix for another great game/event for the PB's a couple weeks from now, which I will definitely take him up on, but also sent me a PM to let me know that he would be bringing something to the game for the kids...
An autographed game-used Milan Lucic stick. An amazing gesture that absolutely floored me. The boys were all pretty stoked about the stick, and took turns holding it and checking it out, as well as telling everyone around them all about it throughout the game, haha. We hung it up above the sliding doors in our living room for everyone to see when they walk into the house. Here are a couple close-up shots of the autographed stick tape and name plate...
While the stick was already enough of an amazing gift to the kids, a few of the things that were exchanged via text were an even more heartfelt and awesome gift to me. Like me, he's married, has a couple kids and is working his way back into the hobby after taking a hiatus. I know the feeling, as I was there for a while myself. Zach's a thoughtful guy, and in a matter of a few hours I made a friend, which beats any stick any day. Don't get me wrong, the stick was excellent, and I can't thank him enough for it, but more importantly, I can't wait to hang out at the next game, hopefully he'll let me buy dinner as a way to return the favor. This isn't the first instance of hobby love that I've seen, and won't be the last, as I'll be sure to do what everyone on the receiving end of such incredible generosity should always should... and pay it forward.
