Looking for some new hockey books to read.... Any suggestions?

The books I've read recently (not many):

Wearing the C is a great insight of being NHL Captain--have over 200 books in my collection if you have other topics in mind..

Keon and Me by Dave Bidini is the best I've read this fall. The Pierre Pilote biography (Heart of the Blackhawks) and Welcome to Maple Leaf Gardens by Graig Abel and Lance Hornby are also solid. The recent book on Keith Magnuson and Bob Duff's Original Six: Detroit Red Wings are strong as well. Dennis Hull's The Third Best Hull has been reprinted recently as well.

Should be reading Randy Druzin's Between The Pipes later this week and expect to be getting Stephen Harper's hockey book later this fall along with Mark Howe and Darren McCarty's autobiographies.
 
If you are interested in going back before the second to last lockout there is Money Players by Bruce Dowbiggin.

The Extra 2% by Jonah Keri, chronicles the story of the Tampa Bay Rays ownership and how they run their team.

These Guys Have All The Fun - Inside the World of ESPN by James Miller and Andrew Shales, crazy book.

And I haven't gotten around to reading this one yet, but The Instigator by Jonathon Gatehouse, about Gary Bettman and how he's changed the league since becoming Commissioner.
 
Bob Probert autobiography was really good in my opinion.

Future Greats and Heartbreaks by scout Gare Joyce was a great read for any draft geek like me.


As for other sports the autobiography by Andre Agassi was great. You just need to have a little knowledge of tennis for it though.
 
I love Stephen Brunt's writing and his two books, "Searching for Bobby Orr" and "Gretzky's Tears" are two of my favourites.
If you're looking for a light read with really solid insight, "King of Russia" follows Dave King's memoirs of his year plus as head coach of the KHL's Mettalurg Magnitogorsk team. He was the first import head coach and the views he got of the League and the Russian culture were really interesting.
Of course there's always Ken Dryden's "The Game" as one of the all-time best reads on the sport.
 
Read many hockey books and my favorite book of all and a real kick to the junk for leaf fans.......Ballard. Don't know if this is even in circulation now but what an amazing read. Real insight on a very odd man and his influence on the leafs and on the whole league. If it wasn't for Ballard the league would have looked different today

Also really enjoyed Esposito's, WHA's the rival league..... Great stories
 
Between the Lines by Ray Scapinello
I have Orr by Bobby Orr that just came out - haven't read yet but will here shortly
I haven't read Gretzky's book in years but that was a good one

Probably my favorite to date though is The Boys of Winter by Wayne Coffey. It is a very clever and well written book about the 80 Olympics. The framework around the Russia game is unique and he finds a way to tell stories and really build a lot up about each player on the team. Quick read that had me balling my eyes out on a flight.
 
I just picked up WHA the Rival League, I lived in Winnipeg during the WHA Jets era and can't wait to read about events that I experienced as a kid.

Also got Orr My Story by Bobby Orr, I feel that this will be a "must" read for any hockey fan.
 
JR-Jeremy Roenick is a good/fun read
Tough Guy-Probert. The book was good and also intriguing as he died before it actually came out.

Wonderful Tonight-Pattie Boyd...she was married to George Harrison and Eric Clapton-enough said.
The Dirt-Motley Crue-life on the road as told by the band-no punches pulled.
 
I found the 2 Don Cherry books very entertaining, also found out a few weird facts about him.

Really liked reading "J.R. The Fast, Crazy Life of Hockey's Most Outspoken and Most Colourful Personality"

"Journeyman" by Sean Pronger and Dan Murphy was decent as well.
 
Reading "Searching For Bobby Orr" right now and enjoying it. Other sport books I have enjoyed over the past year...

"Open" - Andre Agassi
"Crossing The Line" - Derek Samderson
"Quiet Strength" - Tony Dungy

Lots of great books out there. Enjoy!
 
Shameless plugs for friends of mine, but my buddy Russ Cohen just put out a book on the Winter Classics, another, Greg Oliver, co-penned a book about Goons and the great Kevin Shea's latest was Derek Sanderson's story.

My first hockey-dedicated book comes out next year so save some $ for that too!
 
One if my favorite books ever written was the auto biography of Ron Ellis. Amazing man with an amazing story. Believe it's called Over The Boards.

One of the most consistent Leafs of all time, he tells you why he took time off when he was at the peak if his career. Can't recommend it higher.
