Hockey history question

Watching the leafs/canadiens game and my 6 year old says "dad why are the nets red", I of course answer, I have no idea, that's a great question.
Then I head to my friend google and couldn't find anything.

Someone enlighten me to why they are red so I can educated my 6 year old and myself at the same time.
