.......dude got blown up by Lappy tonight. Looked like his knee buckled a bit and he was very off-balance after getting up.

That said, I LOVE seeing the Wingies :owned: Theodore's ***.:cool:

One of these days they'll put Budaj back in.:rolleyes:

I guess they just need to get the mileage out of Josie and his contract since they'll bail him in about 7 more weeks.:dance:
 
I saw the hit, I think they kinda went after lappy a little too much for a hit like that, but either way it was good to see colorado and detroit as intense as ever. Makes for good sportsnet highlights

I also thought the response was a little much and wondered if there would have been any response if the Avs had dressed Scott Parker.

That was what I was thinking as well. I wonder if The Sheriff were out there how much thuggery would have gone down.:rolleyes:

That said, I was having Crawford/Bowman flashbacks when Babcock and Granato got at it, LOL. Cl:cool:assic stuff.
 
I can't stand the Wings, but I never liked to see Yzerman hurt, and I don't like seeing Lidstrom hurt. Couple of 100% class individuals there, hope he's OK.

That being said, if Maltby or Holstrom got knocked around, well.............. :beer::beer:

I agree. Yzerman and Lidstrom are what all hockey players should strive to be like.

I have a immense amount of respect for the Wings as they are an elite team, but Maltby is a piece of garbage. Anything he does on the ice that LOOKS good is a product of Detroit's great system, not his talent level.

Holmstrom I think can push the edge at times, but I like the grit in his game down low.

I would take Holstrom on my team any day, but a long as he's not on my team, bah. Maltby I would never want on my team, along with a few others of his kind.

There is not a team in the league that would not take Holmstrom in a country second - and of they even pretend top balk - they are fibbing about it.

As far as Maltby - I would have to defer to someone else since I am a homer :dance:. maybe I will defer to the coaches/general manager of Team Canada - of yeah he has been there a few times. With Draper - Maltby forms one of the best penalty kills in the league as far as forward tandems. I don't care if you do not like his perception of being a sissy or backing down from people. Hmmm - lets see if you have injured your eyes - you wear a helmet - don't call me a sissy for that. As far as backing down - yep he does, so do plenty of players both superstars and every-day grinders. He rarely hurts his team by taking the odd penalty - and he puts Detroit on the power-play fairly often,
I understand why others do not like him - but I can think of half of the teams in the league that would be happy to replace a youngster with Maltby at his salary.


Please - every team has a pest that other teams hate - and helps their team in the process.

I honestly think Laps deserved a bigger beat down than he got!! I could see if he hit a guy like Homer, Maltby, or some other lower end guy who gives it out. He didn't though, he caught the premier D-man in the league in a vulnerable position and instead of being a stand up player he follows through on the check with forearm conveniently placed so his head slams in the boards!!
I'm sure if it were on the other foot and Sakic, Bourque, Yzerman, Francis, or some other HOFer got injured because some stiff decides to be a hero they would be po'd also! I just think it's lack of respect for a guy like Lidstrom and typical for that douche Laperriere!
Also if you think I'm bitter because if Nick is out it'll cost the Wings any chance at the cup you are right..:D

That said, I agree, I think Lappy came through a little much and a little high with his forearm on the check.

Come on Barrie - you have better come backs than that.

And if Malts was on another team - I probably would not like him either.

As far as Lidstrom & Lippy: Trev hit the nail tight square on. There are players you finish your checks on - and there are players you do not. I have no problem UNTIL the arms came a little high and drove his head backwards. He does it to most players on our team - I don't blink.

And as far as Downey - taking advantage because Sheriff Parker was not in - I have watched Downey all year - he has not backed down from anybody. Does he win against the heavyweight fighters - not usually - but he does stick up for the team. Besides he more than held his own against Porn-Stache Parros against Anaheim last time - so he is not without some skills.

Oh yeah - Barrie: na-na-na-boo-boo!!!!!:D:D

Care to elaborate? I think anybody who sets foot on the ice is fair game for a check, and to think otherwise would sully the game.

That being said, when I say finish your check, I mean just that: a good, clean, solid check. Nothing dirty like elbows up, without the puck or three feet from the boards.
 
Laperriere is a guy who finishes his checks. He finished that one a bit high and Lidstrom was in a very vulnerable spot. I highly doubt that Laperriere thought to himself "ooh- there's Lidstrom off-balance- let me go smash him"- heck I don't even think he has the intellect for that. That being said, I think Downey's response was excellent and its stuff like this that makes him well-loved by his teammates. It wouldn't have made a whit of difference if Parker was there or not- Downey still would have made an attempt at justice. Gone are the figure skating Wings finesse teams of years past. They have a lot more grit to them and proved it in the playoffs last year- a fluke goal in game 6 by Anaheim cost the Wings a trip to the Cup- not any lack of toughness in response to big bad Pronger. And along with Bruce I will claim that anyone who wouldn't want Holmstrom on their team is full of doodoo- the guy is hands down the best net-front player in the game and has the league so riled up that he gets phantom goalie interference calls against him all the time most recently against Anaheim which cost the Wings dearly. You can hate on the Wings all you like......but at least be classy enough to admit its mostly jealousy towards their success.

Rob - I will be happy to elaborate. You will find as you get much older - that you assume everyone understands what you think you told them - my wife says it drives her batty!!!

There are certain players that you do not finish your check on - when you see that they are vulnerable - especially off balance and against the boards. Please do not be pollyanna-ish and think that some players do not get treated different than the rest. As mentioned before - players like Gretzky - Yzerman in days gone by & Selanne - Sakic - Sundin etc had/have a reputation for never really getting rocked by checks - that they did not put themselves in position to get punished. While this is true to some extent - it is also true because other players simply did not go head-hunting for them. Sure - they had players riding shotgun for them - but you really rarely saw them driven into - while they were vulnerable. Please note that most of the players mentioned are older by today's standards.

Lidstrom is much like this as well. He gets his share of hits - but they are never as he is prone. I have seen plenty of the toughest guys in the league - let up slightly when they are racing Lidstrom to nullify an icing call. If Chelios is the one going for the puck - they rock him like there is no tomorrow. And sooner or later - if players are going after you without regard to your well-being , a situation happens like last night. Lippy did not mean to hurt Lidstrom - he meant to finish his check . And sooner or later when you do that, your arms get up, or your stick, or the next time your feet leave the ground because you mis-judged the distance to the hit.

Maybe part of it is the fact that Lidstrom does not play his position physically - he plays it with finesse. He makes plays because he out-thinks the rest of the players in the chess match. But I still feel that he gets a certain leeway with respect to the way his is treated by most players in the league.
