How can you tell...

...if a jersey is legitimate? I have a game used Cody Hodgson jersey from his Canada days (I believe Canada vs Russia superseries) and I wanted to prove that it is real.

I got it from a friend that works for Hockey Canada and managed to get a few jerseys from that series. It didn't come with any identifying paperwork. It was just a free jersey from a friend that worked there.

Anyways, it has the IIHF patch on the bottom of the jersey and that's all I remember. I'll pull it out later and try to find anything else.

What are specific things I should be looking for?

Pictures would definitley help. Determineing whether it is game WORN or just game ISSUED might be tough. These jerseys usually just don't walk out the back door anymore (at least the game worn ones). Most are spoken for by some company before hand, usually to be sold off later.

Things you could look for is stuff like the size (whether it is large enough to fit over equipment, or just large enough for a adult to wear to a game). If it's game worn, there might be wear or board burns on the jersey. The actual size marking (ie: 58,56,etc OR Large X-Large etc.). Most game worn are numbers but replicas are usually large, X-large etc. This isn't always true, but I think it is most of the time.

Also, pretty sure it was from the 2008 IIHF World Under 18 Championships. That's where he wears #9.

First off try and find out how many games he played. If he played in all then look for distinguishing marks on the jersey and try and photomatch it from games he played in. Go to gettyimages or a site with photos like it. they should go that far back I would think. If he played and it doesn't look used it's probably game issued (as koondog stated) which is where it was made to his specifics but he never put the jersey on. If he didn't play it's going to be tough to tell whether it's real or not without some kind of marks on the thing. Don't think they take too many photo's of a goalie on the bench. It's still a beauty even if he didn't wear it and probably worthy of an auto if you can get it....

not really. I have a Schroeder jersey and hes 15 lbs lighter than Hodgson and it and the jersey is a 60. Nike sizes are way different than Reebok.


to the op.. does the jersey show any wear. If so try to compare the wear to pics from that tourny. good luck

The jersey doesn't show a heck of a lot of wear on it. Nothing "substantial" like rips or tearing at least. Although, I wouldn't expect it to have too much with the way Hodgson dominated those tournies, haha.

I haven't been able to find any pictures from getty images that go back that far unfortunately.

I had a Hamhuis Nike World Championships and it was a 60.

Hammer has like 20 pounds on Hodgson,

If anyone were to purchase this that would be a large question mark.. not saying its not a gamer just saying the size is a question mark.

Classic auctions has a Nike jersey from the Olympics which Chris Pronger wore, and it is only a 62.

I wonder if perhaps this was a "screw-up" jersey that was obviously way too big, hence your buddy was able to get a hold of it ? Let's also not forget this was for a kid UNDER 18, and not a full grown adult such as Pronger.

The first generation of Swift jerseys were very tight. Those jerseys worn were generally in the 62-64 range, because they were even slimmer than the ones that Nike has made in the last couple of years for the 2008-2012 generation of jerseys

For reference - I bought a pair of Size 58 Vancouver 2010 authentic jerseys. A friend who is 6'5", 230 lbs put it on, and it pretty much just fit him. The best comparison to that is probably a Size 52 authentic jersey, pre-Swift.

The 62s that the Canadian team wore in Vancouver would probably be about the same as a 56, pre-Swift jersey, which is basically the standard size for hockey players these days - XXL. On the previous generation, that's what a 64 likely was.
