Love the set...design's great, player selection great (even without a Kaberle)...would have given it a "4", except I'm disappointed with the resale value on a lot of it, especially Spectrums, etc...

Kev

i give it a 4 as well i love the look but am extreamly disappointed with the value of the spectrum cards especially, but it is by far the nicest cards so far in 07-08.

I gave it a 3, but could have easily gave it a 4. I was torn between the two. Overall, I think it was a very well executed product. Design, config., attractive to set builders, and team/player collectors alike. The only negs I can think of are that I have seen a bit of damage issues on the SPxtreme inserts and some of the RC and the smallish jersey swatches on the RC and GU inserts is a bit of a drawback. Overall though, one of the better mid-tier releases in a while. Hopefully more like this this year from the UD crew. Mike

I thought it was a nice, well designed set but I found there to be some pretty large QA problems. Will be sending many of my cards back to UD for replacement - lots of chipping and some really torn up corners - especially in the SPxtreme cards.
Overall an above average product - I had to mark it as a three due to the damage but other than that I would have called it a four.

Overall, the design and contents are better than last year. This product is not a good resale nor investment product. Two of my boxes contained 5 Game used pieces (including two rookie auto GJ's each) yet it is doubtful I can recover $100 from any of the three boxes I opened. My favorite pull, a dual Roy/Brodeur Combo contained two white swatches. Ugh.

Rating- 3 4 for design and contents, 2 for value.

this came in a box along with a Jiri Tlusty RC /499 so i can't complain. it's still the only spectrum version (jersey AND patch) that i've seen to date.

I Love The Product, The Holographics Have Really Stepped Up.. It For Me Is By Far The Best Mid Level I've Gone After.. But Yes The Resale Is Killing It.. But Grabbing Bv From Ebay Has Got To Be The Worst Yet.. A Rookie Auto/jersey Production At The Same Level As Crosby And Ovechkin, Coming Out Like Malkin And Staal.. Your Kidding Me.. Tim..

I've only opened packs so far and got nothing but base, so I don't have much to go on. Not overly impressed to date. I did make a trade and picked up a Malkin, although it only had 2 white jersey swatches. Unlike the one that is posted above.

Fun break...with a lot of hits...

But the resell value is horrific...

Luckily I unloaded all but a couple jerseys and some base within 3 days of release.... The Rookies have just plummited...

Nice cards, I only bought a few cards that I wanted (singles). My card dealer got in 2 cases and both of the Kanes were pulled so I decided to stay away. :(

I will get the Gretzky Flashbacks at some point depending on how many are out there. :D

Thanks for all the replies/poll participation here everyone. I am really impressed with the results. I have done several of these type threads over the years and this is by far the best grades that a product has received..... I did a little math, etc.. Here's what I came up with:

Average grade: 3.5 or in other words half way between "Above Average" and "Great"

As of now (40 Poll Replies): 37/40 graded the product above average or higher.

Very impressive results in my opinion. Mike

Pros:
Gorgeous base set
Nearly half the packs have 'hit' cards
Very good rookie collection
Collation is somewhere between "good" to "very good"
Player selection for Flashback Fabrics and Auto Flashback Fabrics
Only a small handful of redemptions - Rask, Gagner, Downie, Russell

Cons:
QA - chipping borders, missing/inconsistent coating
Set numbering is off - no card 148, Rask situated amongst 'jersey rookies' (though I'm guessing that they weren't able to get the photo shoot jersey in time, and are actually doing collectors a favor by making in an autographed card)
Sticker autos, but even then - they're done tastefully
Disappointing resale value so far.

I gave it a 4. The product, aside from QA issues, has been the most fun Upper Deck product for me since 2004-05 SP Authentic.

what I find interesting is that most respondents cite the poor value of the product it terms of resale or anticipated book value, yet give the product an above average rating.

I'm hearing that people like the product but don't think it's worth the price. However, the numerical rating at face value would seem to encourage other collectors to buy SPX.

Are we getting used to the fact that in most cases you won't get your value from a box? It's disturbing to me that case cards, upon resale, usually won't cover the cost of a box.

I haven't broken too much SPX as I try to stay away from SPX, my luck is not the greatest with it. I really love the base design and how they added the dime swatches for the spectrum versions os the base cards. Really sharp design this year.

"Luck of the Draw" is precisely my point. Using your examples, and basing my calculations on the high side of your ranges, a decent box has break even value. While I agree that SPX has more hits than any other product at that price I think it has created a Catch-22 situation. While I agree that it's more enjoyable to pull low numbered inserts and more game used per box the increased frequency drives down their values. Again, I enjoy the product, but after opening my three boxes I came away knowing that I could have purchased the contents much cheaper if I chose to buy the cards individually. I, like others, gamble, and that is the state of the hobby.
