How realistic do you think this is?

Ok most of you all know me as the person who begins a big old project...gets so far with it....and then sells it off. Heck the last master project I finished was the 00/01 Topps Heritage set....since then it has been an attempt here and there and no completition since. Actually i take thatback...I finished the 03/04 Titanium set including all rc's and patches and then 2 days after finishing it I sold it all off...heck it did pay for one heck of a Christmas that year.

But now I have come to a crossroads on another set...the 07/08 ITG Heroes and Prospects emblems set...numbered to 30...I even tried to make it easier on myself by picking up show stamped versions when they were available. I have some UBER SWEET looking emblems, I have knocked off Kane and Price so the biggest boys are done, but I have also run into a point now where player collectors are running up the prices of the others that I need WAY beyond what they are really worth to me.

I just can not see paying upwards of $80 for a player that I have NEVER seen play and especially for emblems/patches that are in no way "special". I sat back last night and watched an auction for one emblem that I never would have thought would eclipse $20 go for over $50...I have never heard of the guy and the emblem was just barely three colors...it made no sense to me.

So my roadblock is this...keeping in mind that there are no more than 30 of the non-show stamped versions out there and maybe 3 show stamped of each available...do I sit tight and hope to knock the remaining ones off IF they can be found down the road OR do I sell off another big batch of a partial set?

Please oh knowledgable HI show me the light. :|
 
Well here are the ones that have ended in the past few days that were on my watch list:
Trevor Cann 48.85
Leland Irving 50.01
Karl Alzner 66.12
Kyle Okposo 52.51

And the thing is, to me, that none of those guys are ones that I really ever thought I'd pay book value for, much less over book value...there are others on the needs list that I would consider higher tiered players or at least players with a bigger fan base that I WOULD expect to pay a lot more for...
 
Don, You seem convinced that you are gonna sell them at some point anyway. If so, why not sell em now and take advantage of the "hot" market? Otherwise, if you plan to continue the set, just pick your spots. You know you can find a nice Emblem piece #/30 for the "right" price if you just be patient. My $.02... Mike

Thank you bro...it was just kind of disheartening to see those four go so high when I thought that I might knock off a good chunk in one evening.

Don, I paid $60 for the Irving, not $50 :D

It was a show stamped 1/1 with a nice WHL emblem though. And I collect him pretty hard of all the people I collect.
 
I was actually quite suprised it went that high but my snipe still had a lot of room to go. Actually I'm a bit surprised lately how high the Irving's have been going, the last 2 show stamped 1/1's went for $25 and $30. Usually you can pick up the regular emblems for about $20 but I've been picking most of them up that have been coming up.

I would say keep at it, perhaps some haven't surfaced very often and that's why the prices are high right now. It's a nice set and you've got some of the big names already, good luck with it if you decide to keep going.
 
The same old story for set collectors. Don,we always run into this and it depends how bad you want to finish the set. If your not really into it then time to sell. If you'll keep it ,pay the money or sit back and hope for a cheaper price down the road

When working on a set, you have to have patients. You know there are other people out there either player collectors or set collectors that probably have the same missing cards as you, with there only being 30 of each it might be harder to find the missing ones further down the road, but you might be able to get them for a nice price. Good luck with it though
