How to cut panel for grading

Hey all,

I have a 1970 Sargent panel with Orr and want to cut the Orr out and submit for grading. I have the whole sheet and was surprised that they are not perforated, but PSA has them graded as singles as part of the Orr master set. Only 6 have been graded and none received an “A”. There is no real border between stamps, so the question is how much of a border do you leave?

We all know PSA’s policy on hand cut items and borders. If these six where graded before the policy and I receive a “A” I would be pi$$ed.

Any tips insights experiences would be appreciated.

Maybe bring it to a printing place? They’ve gotta have something to make laser straight cuts. At least I think they would.

I am certainly not an expert when it comes to grading.But I do have a question about what PSA apparently are doing and what you are hoping they will do for you.If as a collectors we get up in arms about people cutting uncut sheets to get that perfect card.Why should it be alright to cut this Orr from a panel and then have it graded.If PSA will not grade cards cut from uncut sheets,then why would they grade this card after it is cut from a panel,the way it came from the factory.Maybe I am not totally understanding the situation. Perhaps someone can make me see it in a different light.Maybe PSA puts in as a qualifier(HC) hand cut. Not sure. I know that they grade Post cereal cards that usually come in a panel of a few cards. Never been able to figure that out either.Just curious is all.

As a purist and preservationist, I'd say don't do it. I'm on the "special place in a very warm location for people who cut uncut sheets" side of the fence.

These are panels of stamps, meant to be cut and put into a book. So I think it is different from getting an uncut sheet of vintage OPC and laser cutting a card. I have sent the question to PSA as it is worded here. My situation is I have a panel in great shape, in the original wrapper. I have another panel that is beat up but the Orr is not in that bad a condition. As someone who is trying to complete the PSA master set for Bobby Orr, I put this to you. PSA has these singles on their master set and have only graded 6 of these singles... which where all hand cut. So if I want to complete the master set how do I do this? My biggest concern is that I don’t want to go to the trouble if they simply grade it as Authentic which is their policy for hand cut items with no borders. Especially if all the previous items received full grades.

Then I ask, if they are no longer grading cut stamps from this set/year, and only 6 have been graded, does it belong on the master set?

Perhaps grade the entire panel as is
