Seeing the way the league is going that seems like a lot of money for a top 10-15 goalie.

I like JH, but his stats are very pedestrian for a starter. I know he made 2 and change this year, correct? Not sure if more than doubling that was worth it, but there isnt much else out there for the Wings to consider and JH has gotten the job done for them. (again, I like JH, but he hasn't lived up to the hype by any means).
Then again, the wings seem to have a knack for employing 'seemingly' average goalies and making them look great (osgood and legace?). It hasn't hurt them in the past because they have been so darn good. Heck, they made a 400 game winner of Osgood.... It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Getting to see Howard on a nightly basis I will say without a shadow of a doubt the Wings wouldn't be in a playoff spot right now without him. Pretty sure next year his pay will slot him in at 11th or 12th which is right where he belongs. Then Bobrovsky and Rask are both coming up for new deals so he will probably get bumped down a couple more.
If the Wings let him go to UFA status he would have gotten paid more by someone else. The market dictated the price. He's a top 15 goalie and he's getting paid the going rate.

Howard may have had an off game here or there, but he is a very solid goalie and well worth the money. He has kept them in a lot of games that they had no business being in or winning. With all the injury problems he has stood tall for that team and earned every penny IMO.
Unless you have watched the Wings night in and night out for the past two/three years, you have no idea how good Howard has been in net. Detroit's D easily should lead the league in unforced give-a-ways and stupid plays. Look at how many SH goals they have given up this year - all break-aways. Howard is easily better than average.
As far as Osgood - plenty of goalies have played on great teams, and come nowhere close to 400 wins. And then you should probably look at his record with the Islanders and Blues - those were not good teams. And yet he wins 89 and loses 65 and takes both teams to the playoffs. Average goalies do not get 400 wins...... period.
Now - find some more D-Men like DeKeyser - that boy has skills!
