Those're filthy cheap!
Those cards are true 1/1 cards with huge memorabilia pireces and some even has autograph, from a very expensive ultra high-end series plus slabbed but sells filthy cheap for now or recently...there're some at ebay right now (some big-name-players) but with no bids and ends in 1-2 days or less...

My Barrasso was filthy expensive, almost 5x (4.5x to be more exact) of Cam Wards...

So I'm quite stunned by that SuperBox of Barrasso sells for much more than players like Thomas, Bure, Perry etc and I think that the Langkow one was sold for $35 or something even with a stunning patch plus AU....even if Barrasso's only got a 2-colored swatch of jersey (black/yellow) while others even got 4-8 colored pieces of patch plus AU...?

So my 2nd question is why Barrasso got so few nicer card?
Because his cards are selling for very high price compared with many others even some higher superstars plus that many of his nicer cards get many bids from many different biddeers while there're some players with "medicore" stats who got huge load of cards every year?

I won 2 true 1/1 cards with Cam Ward for below $20 each from The Cup!!!
True 1/1 cards of Barrasso often goes for +$150-$300....

I was surfing at ebay for fun and checked out all those completed listings and got shocked by some prices of my former PC-players....of course there are some very expensive cards of those players but many /10, /15, /25, /50 etc... of players like Ward, Lundqvist, Cujo etc sells filthy cheap compared with my both current PC-players.

Many /10 or /20 memorabilia card of my PC-players for now goes for $75-$150 while I saw many many low printed memorabilia cards (often autograped) from series like The Cup goes for $50-$90 even with Henrik Lundqvist!?

But I'm thankful because of it, that my PC-players doesn't gets so many cards like some other platers like Ranford, Hextall, R.Brodeur, T.Twist (how could he get so many NHL-shields card!?), W.Clark, T.Linden every year if they did so I'm doomed haha....

His cards sell higher for just that reason -- lack of supply. Might be harder to get his gamers, it'd be worth asking UD/Panini reps about that. And obviously the inverse affect happens with the others you mentioned. When there's an abundance of product on the market, hobbyists can be more choosey about what they want and not HAVE to go for that one piece because there are plenty more like it.

There are a few guys I'm curious as to why they don't have more items. Barrasso has always been one of them.

FJ, I've wondered this myself so many times. It really is frustrating to see current stars like the ones u mentioned have very nice cards go for so cheap. I guess it all comes down to the fact that Barrasso is a very popular player to collect, and since he doesn't have many cards produced anymore (10-11 was the exception), people are willing to spend big $ for his cards.

As far as why he has so few cards produced, I'm not sure. The reasons u mentioned are perfect reasons why the companies should indeed release more.

There are multiple factors to take into consideration:

1. A lot of it has to do with the fact that the Superbox cards are widely considered show cards since they were available through a program at the Spring Expo, and therefore sell in line with other show cards which are ignored by a large majority of the collecting community.

2. As mentioned, while Barrasso has a much smaller collector base than Ward, Barrasso also has fewer cards, therefore supply and demand will come into it, and prices will spike when a rare item surfaces that more than one person is chasing.

3. The market value for ITG cards sadly lacks behind the value of cards from the licensed companies. Whether it's aesthetics, lack of licensing, whatever, is not for me to comment on, but there is no denying it's a factor.

I'd say this is probably one of the, if not the biggest factors. There are players out there that are mass collected for reasons other than their "name" in the collecting world.

Apples to apples comparisons would dictate, that based on career accomplishments, a guy like Tom Barrasso should be on the same collectibility scale as, say, Chris Osgood right? Both guys won a couple cups, are close together on the alltime wins list, and both are well remembered for their great performances day in and day out. Osgood, compared to a lot of goaltenders in other sets also does not have a lot of high end stuff.

But there are so many other factors that lead someone to collect a player that make the money you put into collecting them seem negligible.

-Favorite player growing up?
-Favorite player ever?
-Collector of that team / country?
-Alma mater?
-Family member?

There are some players out there, like Theo Fleury and Trevor Linden whose collectors aren't concerned about the fact that comparable players' cards sell for less. They've all got stories behind why they collect these players, and why what they put into building their collection is irrelevant in the grand scheme

Just imagine if Tom Barrasso played his entire career for the Toronto Maple Leafs, brought them instead of the Penguins a couple Stanley Cups, won the US an Olympic goal medal and went to the University of North Dakota. Barrasso collectors would be screwed :laugh:

I paid a total of $1000 for the four Irbe Superboxes that came out...so yeah!

I'm not sure how much you paid on your Barrassos but Bure did not come cheap for me.

After I received everything. These two cost me well over $500 together.


At the end of the day, these are very much just show cards and not original print run cards. Like most show cards, they usually don't go for much. I'm shocked at how high some have went actually.

They are nice looking cards for sure, but some players simply aren't as rare and in the case of the Ward, aren't that good looking.
